    Comparison of the Spherical Averaged Pseudopotential Model with the Stabilized Jellium Model

    We compare Kohn-Sham results (density, cohesive energy, size and effect of charging) of the Spherical Averaged Pseudopotential Model with the Stabilized Jellium Model for clusters of sodium and aluminum with less than 20 atoms. We find that the Stabilized Jellium Model, although conceptually and practically more simple, gives better results for the cohesive energy and the elastic stiffness.     Nonradiative Electronic Deexcitation Time Scales in Metal Clusters

    The life-times due to Auger-electron emission for a hole on a deep electronic shell of neutral and charged sodium clusters are studied for different sizes. We consider spherical clusters and calculate the Auger-transition probabilities using the energy levels and wave functions calculated in the Local-Density-Approximation (LDA). We obtain that Auger emission processes are energetically not allowed for neutral and positively charged sodium clusters. In general, the Auger probabilities in small NaN_N^- clusters are remarkably different from the atomic ones and exhibit a rich size dependence. The Auger decay times of most of the cluster sizes studied are orders of magnitude larger than in atoms and might be comparable with typical fragmentation times.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures.     Phase Transition of XY Model in Heptagonal Lattice

    We numerically investigate the nature of the phase transition of the XY model in the heptagonal lattice with the negative curvature, in comparison to other interaction structures such as a flat two-dimensional (2D) square lattice and a small-world network. Although the heptagonal lattice has a very short characteristic path length like the small-world network structure, it is revealed via calculation of the Binder's cumulant that the former exhibits a zero-temperature phase transition while the latter has the finite-temperature transition of the mean-field nature. Through the computation of the vortex density as well as the correlation function in the low-temperature approximation, we show that the absence of the phase transition originates from the strong spinwave-type fluctuation, which is discussed in relation to the usual 2D XY model.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures, to be published in Europhys.     Enterobius vermicularis: Ancient DNA from North and South American Coprolites

    A molecular paleoparasitological diagnostic approach was developed for Enterobius vermicularis. Ancient DNA was extracted from 27 coprolites from archaeological sites in Chile and USA. Enzymatic amplification of human mtDNA sequences confirmed the human origin. We designed primers specific to the E. vermicularis 5S ribosomal RNA spacer region and they allowed reproducible polymerase chain reaction identification of ancient material. We suggested that the paleoparasitological microscopic identification could accompany molecular diagnosis, which also opens the possibility of sequence analysis to understand parasite-host evolution

    Exploring a developing tourism industry: A resource-based view approach.

    This exploratory study examines dimensions related to tourism development in the case of Uruguay. Internal and external analyses were conducted to identify key resources to maximise opportunities and minimise threats to the country’s tourism development. The study, which adopts the resource-based view of the firm, is based on the perspectives of key tourism stakeholders. Unstructured, face-to-face interviews were conducted with eight key informants, three representing government institutions, three private, and two public-private. The interviews revealed opportunities in various fronts, primarily consolidating and expanding international markets, and developing additional offerings, including convention/event and heritage tourism to minimise the effects of seasonality. Strong dependence on neighbouring markets, marginal airline connectivity and knowledge of Uruguay internationally were main perceived barriers to further development. The value of employing the resource-based framework in guiding understanding of the themes under investigation was confirmed. Implications emerging from the findings are discussed, and future research directions suggested

    Ionic structure and photoabsorption in medium sized sodium clusters

    We present ground-state configurations and photoabsorption spectra of Na-7+, Na-27+ and Na-41+. Both the ionic structure and the photoabsorption spectra of medium-size sodium clusters beyond Na-20 have been calculated self-consistently with a nonspherical treatment of the valence electrons in density functional theory. We use a local pseudopotential that has been adjusted to experimental bulk properties and the atomic 3s level of sodium. Our studies have shown that both the ionic structure of the ground state and the positions of the plasmon resonances depend sensitively on the pseudopotential used in the calculation, which stresses the importance of its consistent use in both steps.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures.     Study of the phase transition in the 3d Ising spin glass from out of equilibrium numerical simulations

    Using the decay of the out equilibrium spin-spin correlation function we compute the equilibrium Edward-Anderson order parameter in the three dimensional binary Ising spin glass in the spin glass phase. We have checked that the Edward-Anderson order parameter computed from out of equilibrium numerical simulations follows with good precision the critical law as determined in experiments and in numerical studies at equilibrium. We have also studied the dependence of the order parameter with the lattice size. Finally we present a large time study of the scaling of the off-equilibrium fluctuation-dissipation relations.Comment: 14 pages, 7 Postscript figure

    Ontogeny of synaptophysin and synaptoporin in the central nervous system

    The expression of the synaptic vesicle antigens synaptophysin (SY) and synaptoporin (SO) was studied in the rat striatum, which contains a nearly homogeneous population of GABAergic neurons. In situ hybridization revealed high levels of SY transcripts in the striatal anlage from embryonic day (E) 14 until birth. In contrast. SO hybridization signals were low, and no immunoreactive cell bodies were detected at these stages of development. At E 14, SY-immunoreactivity was restricted to perikarya. In later prenatal stages of development SY-immunoreactivity appeared in puncta (identified as terminals containing immunostained synaptic vesicles), fibers, thick fiber bundles and ‘patches’. In postnatal and adult animals, perikarya of striatal neurons exhibited immunoreaction for SO; ultrastructurally SO antigen was found in the Golgi apparatus and in multivesicular bodies. SO-positive boutons were rare in the striatum. In the neuropil, numerous presynaptic terminals positive for SY were observed. Our data indicate that the expression of synaptic vesicle proteins in GABAergic neurons of the striatum is developmentally regulated. Whereas SY is prevalent during embryonic development, SO is the major synaptic vesicle antigen expressed postnatally by striatal neurons which project to the globus pallidus and the substantia nigra.     Violation of the Fluctuation Dissipation Theorem in Finite Dimensional Spin Glasses

    We study the violation of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem in the three and four dimensional Gaussian Ising spin glasses using on and off equilibrium simulations. We have characterized numerically the function X(C) that determine the violation and we have studied its scaling properties. Moreover we have computed the function x(C) which characterize the breaking of the replica symmetry directly from equilibrium simulations. The two functions are numerically equal and in this way we have established that the conjectured connection between the violation of fluctuation dissipation theorem in the off-equilibrium dynamics and the replica symmetry breaking at equilibrium holds for finite dimensional spin glasses. These results point to a spin glass phase with spontaneously broken replica symmetry in finite dimensional spin glasses.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, also available at http://chimera.roma1.infn.it/index_papers_complex.htm
