Adiabatic Electroweak Baryogenesis Driven by an Axion-like Particle

An axion-like particle (ALP) offers a new direction in electroweak baryogenesis because the periodic nature enables it to trigger a strong first-order phase transition insensitively to the decay constant $f$. For $f$ much above TeV, the ALP-induced electroweak phase transition is approximately described by adiabatic processes, distinguishing our scenario for electroweak baryogenesis from the conventional ones. We show that, coupled to the electroweak anomaly, the ALP can naturally realize spontaneous electroweak baryogenesis to solve the matter-antimatter asymmetry problem for $f$ in the range between about $10^5$ GeV and $10^7$ GeV. In such an ALP window, the $CP$ violation for baryogenesis is totally free from the experimental constraints, especially from the recently improved limit on the electron electric dipole moment. A Reading and Writing Placement Test: Design, Evaluation, and Analysis

Placement tests, along with the growing interest in their validation, have become increasingly important in English as a Second Language programs. To this end, the present paper illustrates procedures in designing a placement test and using it to evaluate students’ language ability by means of statistical analysis. 29 participants from three proficiency levels (beginning, intermediate, and advanced) took reading and writing placement test sections. Students’ performance at each proficiency level was analyzed separately and compared across proficiency levels. In addition, analyses of responses on a survey revealed a relationship between language learning attitudes and behaviors exhibited by the participants and their performance on the placement test. Through close examination of the process of placement test design, evaluation, and analysis, this paper provides practical guidelines for reading and writing placement testing

Contextualizing accumulation by dispossession: the state and high-rise apartment clusters in Gangnam, Seoul

In an effort to contribute to the contemporary debates on accumulation by dispossession (ABD), we argue for a closer attention to the link between the state and ABD. We propose contextualizing ABD within the institutionalization of the process of replacing communal property rights with private property rights. In such institutionalization, the state plays a critical role as the final guarantor of property rights. As such, the sociospatial specificities of the state would strongly influence how ABD unfolds and how it is understood. In the empirical part of this article, we use this approach to focus on a specific type of capitalist state—that is, the developmental state—to examine the emergence of apartment-dominated residential landscapes in Gangnam District, Seoul, in the 1970s through the use of ABD. Dark matter filtering-out effect during a first-order phase transition

If the mass of dark matter is generated from a cosmological phase transition involving the nucleation of bubbles, the corresponding bubble walls can filter out dark matter particles during the phase transition. Only particles with sufficient momentum to overcome their mass inside the bubbles can pass through the walls. As a result, the dark matter number density after the phase transition has a suppression factor $\exp(-M_\chi/2\tilde \gamma T)$, where $M_\chi$ is the dark matter mass, and $\tilde \gamma$ and $T$ are the Lorentz factor and temperature of the incoming fluid in the bubble wall rest frame, respectively. Under certain assumptions, we show that the filtering-out process can naturally provide a large suppression consistent with the observed dark matter density for a wide range of dark matter masses up to the Planck scale. Contextual Linear Bandits under Noisy Features: Towards Bayesian Oracles

We study contextual linear bandit problems under uncertainty on features; they are noisy with missing entries. To address the challenges from the noise, we analyze Bayesian oracles given observed noisy features. Our Bayesian analysis finds that the optimal hypothesis can be far from the underlying realizability function, depending on noise characteristics, which is highly non-intuitive and does not occur for classical noiseless setups. This implies that classical approaches cannot guarantee a non-trivial regret bound. We thus propose an algorithm aiming at the Bayesian oracle from observed information under this model, achieving $\tilde{O}(d\sqrt{T})$ regret bound with respect to feature dimension $d$ and time horizon $T$. Ciliated muconodular papillary tumor of the lung: The risk of false-positive diagnosis in frozen section

AbstractCiliated muconodular papillary tumor (CMPT) is newly-defined low-grade malignant tumor, characterized as papillary tumor consisting of ciliated columnar, goblet, and basal cells. We present one case of pulmonary peripheral neoplasm misdiagnosed as mucinous adenocarcinoma. Pathologic findings showed, centrally, cystic papillary growth consisting of ciliated columnar, goblet, and basal cells, and peripherally, some tumor cells spread along the adjacent alveolar walls, in a lepidic fashion, and floating in pool of mucin. Tumor cells had bland nuclei, and no mitotic activity was observed. This had been initially misdiagnosed as mucinous adenocarcinoma in frozen section. We reviewed previous articles as well as permanent and frozen slides. In conclusion, in order to reduce the possibility of false positives, it is important to be aware that CMPT is a rare form of peripheral mucin-producing tumor with characteristic histologic findings
