Experimental and analytical results of tangential blowing applied to a subsonic V/STOL inlet
Engine inlets for subsonic V/STOL aircraft must operate over a wide range of conditions without internal flow separation. Experimental and analytical investigations were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of tangential blowing to maintain attached flow to high angles of attack. The inlet had a relatively thin lip with a blowing slot located either on the lip or in the diffuser. The height and width of these slots was varied. Experimentally determined flow separation boundaries showed that lip blowing achieved higher angle of attack capability than diffuser blowing. This capability was achieved with the largest slot circumferential extent and either of the two slot heights. Predicted (analytical) separation boundaries showed good agreement except at the highest angles of attack
The Minimum Wiener Connector
The Wiener index of a graph is the sum of all pairwise shortest-path
distances between its vertices. In this paper we study the novel problem of
finding a minimum Wiener connector: given a connected graph and a set
of query vertices, find a subgraph of that connects all
query vertices and has minimum Wiener index.
We show that The Minimum Wiener Connector admits a polynomial-time (albeit
impractical) exact algorithm for the special case where the number of query
vertices is bounded. We show that in general the problem is NP-hard, and has no
PTAS unless . Our main contribution is a
constant-factor approximation algorithm running in time
.
A thorough experimentation on a large variety of real-world graphs confirms
that our method returns smaller and denser solutions than other methods, and
does so by adding to the query set a small number of important vertices

Conserved cosmological structures in the one-loop superstring effective action
A generic form of low-energy effective action of superstring theories with
one-loop quantum correction is well known. Based on this action we derive the
complete perturbation equations and general analytic solutions in the
cosmological spacetime. Using the solutions we identify conserved quantities
characterizing the perturbations: the amplitude of gravitational wave and the
perturbed three-space curvature in the uniform-field gauge both in the
large-scale limit, and the angular-momentum of rotational perturbation are
conserved independently of changing gravity sector. Implications for
calculating perturbation spectra generated in the inflation era based on the

NO sub X Deposited in the Stratosphere by the Space Shuttle Solid Rocket Motors
The possible effects of the interaction of the plumes from the two solid rocket motors (SRM) from the space shuttles and mixing of the rocket exhaust products and ambient air in the base recirculation region on the total nitrous oxide deposition rate in the stratosphere were investigated. It was shown that these phenomena will not influence the total NOx deposition rate. It was also shown that uncertainties in the particle size of Al2O3, size distributions and particle/gas drag and heat transfer coefficients will not have a significant effect on the predicted NOx deposition rate. The final results show that the total mass flow of NOx leaving the plume at 30 km altitude is 4000 g./sec with a possible error factor of 3. For a vehicle velocity of 1140 meter/sec this yields an NOx deposition rate of about 3.5 g./meter. The corresponding HCl deposition rate at this altitude is about a factor of 500 greater than this value
Unified Analysis of Cosmological Perturbations in Generalized Gravity
In a class of generalized Einstein's gravity theories we derive the equations
and general asymptotic solutions describing the evolution of the perturbed
universe in unified forms. Our gravity theory considers general couplings
between the scalar field and the scalar curvature in the Lagrangian, thus
includes broad classes of generalized gravity theories resulting from recent
attempts for the unification. We analyze both the scalar-type mode and the
gravitational wave in analogous ways. For both modes the large scale evolutions
are characterized by the same conserved quantities which are valid in the
Einstein's gravity. This unified and simple treatment is possible due to our
proper choice of the gauges, or equivalently gauge invariant combinations.Comment: 4 pages, revtex, no figure

Effect of a rotating propeller on the separation angle of attack and distortion in ducted propeller inlets
The present study represents an extension of an earlier wind tunnel experiment performed with the P&W 17-in. Advanced Ducted Propeller (ADP) Simulator operating at Mach 0.2. In order to study the effects of a rotating propeller on the inlet flow, data were obtained in the UTRC 10- by 15-Foot Large Subsonic Wind Tunnel with the same hardware and instrumentation, but with the propeller removed. These new tests were performed over a range of flow rates which duplicated flow rates in the powered simulator program. The flow through the inlet was provided by a remotely located vacuum source. A comparison of the results of this flow-through study with the previous data from the powered simulator indicated that in the conventional inlet the propeller produced an increase in the separation angle of attack between 4.0 deg at a specific flow of 22.4 lb/sec-sq ft to 2.7 deg at a higher specific flow of 33.8 lb/sec-sq ft. A similar effect on separation angle of attack was obtained by using stationary blockage rather than a propeller
