Improved Combinatorial Group Testing Algorithms for Real-World Problem Sizes
We study practically efficient methods for performing combinatorial group
testing. We present efficient non-adaptive and two-stage combinatorial group
testing algorithms, which identify the at most d items out of a given set of n
items that are defective, using fewer tests for all practical set sizes. For
example, our two-stage algorithm matches the information theoretic lower bound
for the number of tests in a combinatorial group testing regimen.Comment: 18 pages; an abbreviated version of this paper is to appear at the

Gas-Surface Dynamics and Profile Evolution during Etching of Silicon
Scattering of energetic F atoms on a fluorinated Si surface is studied by molecular beam methods. The energy transfer closely follows hard-sphere collision kinematics. Energy and angular distributions of unreacted F atoms suggest significant multiple-bounce scattering in addition to single-bounce scattering and trapping desorption. An empirical model of the atom-surface interaction dynamics is used in a Monte Carlo simulation of topography evolution during neutral beam etching of Si. Model predictions of profile phenomena are validated by experiments
The infrared conductivity of NaCoO: evidence of gapped states
We present infrared ab-plane conductivity data for the layered cobaltate
NaCoO at three different doping levels (, and 0.75). The
Drude weight increases monotonically with hole doping, . At the lowest
hole doping level =0.75 the system resembles the normal state of underdoped
cuprate superconductors with a scattering rate that varies linearly with
frequency and temperature and there is an onset of scattering by a bosonic mode
at 600 \cm. Two higher hole doped samples ( and 0.25) show two
different-size gaps (110 \cm and 200 \cm, respectively) in the optical
conductivities at low temperatures and become insulators. The spectral weights
lost in the gap region of 0.50 and 0.25 samples are shifted to prominent peaks
at 200 \cm and 800 \cm, respectively. We propose that the two gapped states of
the two higher hole doped samples (=0.50 and 0.25) are pinned charge ordered
states.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Viability of competing field theories for the driven lattice gas
It has recently been suggested that the driven lattice gas should be
described by a novel field theory in the limit of infinite drive. We review the
original and the new field theory, invoking several well-documented key
features of the microscopics. Since the new field theory fails to reproduce
these characteristics, we argue that it cannot serve as a viable description of
the driven lattice gas. Recent results, for the critical exponents associated
with this theory, are re-analyzed and shown to be incorrect.Comment: 4 pages, revtex, no figure
Cosmological perturbations in a gravity with quadratic order curvature couplings
We present a set of equations describing the evolution of the scalar-type
cosmological perturbation in a gravity with general quadratic order curvature
coupling terms. Equations are presented in a gauge ready form, thus are ready
to implement various temporal gauge conditions depending on the problems. The
Ricci-curvature square term leads to a fourth-order differential equation for
describing the spacetime fluctuations in a spatially homogeneous and isotropic
cosmological background.Comment: 5 pages, no figure, To appear in Phys. Rev.
Singularities in scalar-tensor gravity
The analysis of certain singularities in scalar-tensor gravity contained in a
recent paper is completed, and situations are pointed out in which these
singularities cannot occur.Comment: 6 pages, LaTe
Anisotropic strains and magnetoresistance of La_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_{3}
Thin films of perovskite manganite La_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_{3} were grown
epitaxially on SrTiO_3(100), MgO(100) and LaAlO_3(100) substrates by the pulsed
laser deposition method. Microscopic structures of these thin film samples as
well as a bulk sample were fully determined by x-ray diffraction measurements.
The unit cells of the three films have different shapes, i.e., contracted
tetragonal, cubic, and elongated tetragonal for SrTiO_3, MgO, and LaAlO_3
cases, respectively, while the unit cell of the bulk is cubic. It is found that
the samples with cubic unit cell show smaller peak magnetoresistance than the
noncubic ones do. The present result demonstrates that the magnetoresistance of
La_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_{3} can be controlled by lattice distortion via externally
imposed strains.Comment: Revtex, 10 pages, 2 figure
