NON-LINEAR ADJUSTMENT PROCESS IN WON/DOLLAR AND WON/YEN REAL EXCHAGE RATES

We examine the purchasing power parity (PPP) hypothesis in won/dollar and won/yen real exchange rates using a non-linear framework. Many empirical studies based on the linear framework have failed to find clear supporting evidence for the validity of PPP hypothesis. We test the PPP hypothesis using a two-stage procedure suggested by Engle and Granger (1987), and show that it fails to reject non-cointegration. Evaluating the linear model against the nonlinear STAR model, we find that linearity is clearly rejected, but ESTAR process is accepted. Moreover, the parameter estimates of the ESTAR model establish a certain pattern of random walk behavior for small deviations and of fast adjustment for large deviations, thus providing strong evidence for mean-reverting behavior in real won/dollar and won/yen exchange rates.Purchasing Power Parity, Non-linear Adjustment Process, ESTAR Model

    Design in support of playfulness

    Get PDF
Playful environments can be conceived as landscapes able to support an individual’s internal sense of playfulness and its external manifestation. These environments cultivate a sense of place where recreational, therapeutic, and educational resources are merged based on the conviction that nature is a positive influence. This project explores how outdoor spaces encompass the built and natural world, convey a sense of connection to spatial ephemera and phenomena, and ultimately how space can become spaces for individuals. The project explores the notion of playfulness and the meaning it may acquire for design within landscape architecture. The study aims to positively contribute to making people’s lives more playful, joyful, and cheerful. It intends to touch people\u27s lives gently, improve their quality of life, and influence the way they build and view the world more positively. Throughout the thesis, drawing acts as a tool for noticing, linking, and wayfinding the relationship between individuals and space as well as structural and ephemeral elements in the landscape. Through drawing, the investigation examines the process of communicating powerful and meaningful experiences and conveys a personal aesthetic approach to the landscape moments

    Crowd Counting with Decomposed Uncertainty

Research in neural networks in the field of computer vision has achieved remarkable accuracy for point estimation. However, the uncertainty in the estimation is rarely addressed. Uncertainty quantification accompanied by point estimation can lead to a more informed decision, and even improve the prediction quality. In this work, we focus on uncertainty estimation in the domain of crowd counting. With increasing occurrences of heavily crowded events such as political rallies, protests, concerts, etc., automated crowd analysis is becoming an increasingly crucial task. The stakes can be very high in many of these real-world applications. We propose a scalable neural network framework with quantification of decomposed uncertainty using a bootstrap ensemble. We demonstrate that the proposed uncertainty quantification method provides additional insight to the crowd counting problem and is simple to implement. We also show that our proposed method exhibits the state of the art performances in many benchmark crowd counting datasets.Comment: Accepted in AAAI 2020 (Main Technical Track
