    The Fast Wandering of Slow Birds

    I study a single "slow" bird moving with a flock of birds of a different, and faster (or slower) species. I find that every "species" of flocker has a characteristic speed γv0\gamma\ne v_0, where v0v_0 is the mean speed of the flock, such that, if the speed vsv_s of the "slow" bird equals γ\gamma, it will randomly wander transverse to the mean direction of flock motion far faster than the other birds will: its mean-squared transverse displacement will grow in d=2d=2 with time tt like t5/3t^{5/3}, in contrast to t4/3t^{4/3} for the other birds. In d=3d=3, the slow bird's mean squared transverse displacement grows like t5/4t^{5/4}, in contrast to tt for the other birds. If vsγv_s\neq \gamma, the mean-squared displacement of the "slow" bird crosses over from t5/2t^{5/2} to t4/3t^{4/3} scaling in d=2d=2, and from t5/4t^{5/4} to tt scaling in d=3d=3, at a time tct_c that scales according to tcvsγ2t_c \propto|v_s-\gamma|^{-2}.Comment: 10 pages; 5 pages of which did not appear in earlier versions, but were added in response to referee's suggestion

    The particular Ku-band carrier, PN despreading, and symbol synchronization strategies, which were selected for implementation in the Ku-band transponder aboard the orbiter, were assessed and evaluated from a systems performance viewpoint, verifying that system specifications were met. A study was performed of the design and implementation of tracking techniques which are suitable for incorporation into the Orbiter Ku-band communication system. Emphasis was placed on maximizing tracking accuracy and communication system flexibility while minimizing cost, weight, and system complexity of Orbiter and ground systems hardware. The payload communication study assessed the design and performance of the forward link and return link bent-pipe relay modes for attached and detached payloads. As part of this study, a design for a forward link bent-pipe was proposed which employs a residual carrier but which is tracked by the existing Costas loop

    A Reanalysis of the Hydrodynamic Theory of Fluid, Polar-Ordered Flocks

    I reanalyze the hydrodynamic theory of fluid, polar ordered flocks. I find new linear terms in the hydrodynamic equations which slightly modify the anisotropy, but not the scaling, of the damping of sound modes. I also find that the nonlinearities allowed {\it in equilibrium} do not stabilize long ranged order in spatial dimensions d=2d=2; in accord with the Mermin-Wagner theorem. Nonequilibrium nonlinearities {\it do} stabilize long ranged order in d=2d=2, as argued by earlier work. Some of these were missed by earlier work; it is unclear whether or not they change the scaling exponents in d=2d=2.Comment: 6 pages, no figures. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:0909.195

    Implications of deep drainage through saline clay for groundwater recharge and sustainable cropping in a semi-arid catchment, Australia

    The magnitude and timing of deep drainage and salt leaching through clay soils is a critical issue for dryland agriculture in semi-arid regions (<500 mm yr<sup>−1</sup> rainfall, potential evapotranspiration >2000 mm yr<sup>−1</sup>) such as parts of Australia's Murray-Darling Basin (MDB). In this rare study, hydrogeological measurements and estimations of the historic water balance of crops grown on overlying Grey Vertosols were combined to estimate the contribution of deep drainage below crop roots to recharge and salinization of shallow groundwater. Soil sampling at two sites on the alluvial flood plain of the Lower Namoi catchment revealed significant peaks in chloride concentrations at 0.8–1.2 m depth under perennial vegetation and at 2.0–2.5 m depth under continuous cropping indicating deep drainage and salt leaching since conversion to cropping. Total salt loads of 91–229 t ha<sup>−1</sup> NaCl equivalent were measured for perennial vegetation and cropping, with salinity to ≥ 10 m depth that was not detected by shallow soil surveys. Groundwater salinity varied spatially from 910 to 2430 mS m<sup>−1</sup> at 21 to 37 m depth (<i>N</i> = 5), whereas deeper groundwater was less saline (290 mS m<sup>−1</sup>) with use restricted to livestock and rural domestic supplies in this area. The Agricultural Production Systems Simulator (APSIM) software package predicted deep drainage of 3.3–9.5 mm yr<sup>−1</sup> (0.7–2.1% rainfall) based on site records of grain yields, rainfall, salt leaching and soil properties. Predicted deep drainage was highly episodic, dependent on rainfall and antecedent soil water content, and over a 39 yr period was restricted mainly to the record wet winter of 1998. During the study period, groundwater levels were unresponsive to major rainfall events (70 and 190 mm total), and most piezometers at about 18 m depth remained dry. In this area, at this time, recharge appears to be negligible due to low rainfall and large potential evapotranspiration, transient hydrological conditions after changes in land use and a thick clay dominated vadose zone. <br><br> This is in contrast to regional groundwater modelling that assumes annual recharge of 0.5% of rainfall. Importantly, it was found that leaching from episodic deep drainage could not cause discharge of saline groundwater in the area, since the water table was several meters below the incised river bed

    Shuttle Ku-band and S-band communications implementation study

    Various aspects of the shuttle orbiter S-band network communication system, the S-band payload communication system, and the Ku-band communication system are considered. A method is proposed for obtaining more accurate S-band antenna patterns of the actual shuttle orbiter vehicle during flight because the preliminary antenna patterns using mock-ups are not realistic that they do not include the effects of additional appendages such as wings and tail structures. The Ku-band communication system is discussed especially the TDRS antenna pointing accuracy with respect to the orbiter and the modifications required and resulting performance characteristics of the convolutionally encoded high data rate return link to maintain bit synchronizer lock on the ground. The TDRS user constraints on data bit clock jitter and data asymmetry on unbalanced QPSK with noisy phase references are included. The S-band payload communication system study is outlined including the advantages and experimental results of a peak regulator design built and evaluated by Axiomatrix for the bent-pipe link versus the existing RMS-type regulator. The nominal sweep rate for the deep-space transponder of 250 Hz/s, and effects of phase noise on the performance of a communication system are analyzed

    Foram realizados dois experimentos com objetivo de avaliar a translocação do inseticida tiametoxam+lambdacialotrina da folha para a haste da planta de soja, utilizando o percevejo Edessa meditabunda como bioindicador. Em casa-de-vegetação, plantas de soja da cultivar BRS 284, no estágio R5, foram tratadas com 1,667 mL/L de Engeo Pleno® (tiametoxam+lambdacialotrina), pelo método de imersão da folha. Foi utilizado o delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com unidades experimentais compostas por 3 adultos do percevejo confinados na haste da planta de soja. No EXPERIMENTO A foram estudados 4 tratamentos com 4 repetições. Nos tratamentos T1A e T2A todas as folhas foram tratadas com o inseticida e a haste foi infestada na sua metade superior e inferior, respectivamente. T3A e T4A não receberam inseticida e a haste foi infestada na sua metade superior e inferior, respectivamente. Os resultados mostram que ocorre translocação do inseticida da folha para a haste, em quantidade suficiente para causar mortalidade superior a 93% (T1A) e 83% (T2A), aos 9-12 DAI (dias após a infestação). No EXPERIMENTO B foram estudados 6 tratamentos com 6 repetições. Em T1B e T2B foram tratadas as folhas da metade superior da planta e foi infestada a haste da sua metade superior e inferior, respectivamente. Em T3B e T4B foram tratadas as folhas da metade inferior da planta e foi infestada a sua metade superior e inferior, respectivamente. T5B e T6B não receberam inseticida e a planta foi infestada na sua metade superior e inferior, respectivamente. Neste experimento, as maiores mortalidades foram observadas aos 10 DAI, nos tratamentos em que os insetos foram confinados na mesma metade da planta que recebeu o inseticida, T1B (77%) e T4B (70%) não diferindo de T3B (63%) em que os insetos foram confinados acima do ponto de aplicação do inseticida. Enquanto que em T2B a mortalidade foi inferior a 17%. Assim conclui-se que o produto transloca da folha para a haste e apresenta movimento ascendente

The principal activities reported are: (1) performance analysis of the payload narrowband bent-pipe through the Ku-band communication system; (2) performance evaluation of the TDRSS user constraints placed on the S-band and Ku-band communication systems; (3) assessment of the shuttle-unique S-band TDRSS ground station false lock susceptibility; (4) development of procedure to make S-band antenna measurements during orbital flight; (5) development of procedure to make RFI measurements during orbital flight to assess the performance degradation to the TDRSS S-band communication link; and (6) analysis of the payload interface integration problem areas

    Space Shuttle program communication and tracking systems interface analysis

    The Space Shuttle Program Communications and Tracking Systems Interface Analysis began April 18, 1983. During this time, the shuttle communication and tracking systems began flight testing. Two areas of analysis documented were a result of observations made during flight tests. These analyses involved the Ku-band communication system. First, there was a detailed analysis of the interface between the solar max data format and the Ku-band communication system including the TDRSS ground station. The second analysis involving the Ku-band communication system was an analysis of the frequency lock loop of the Gunn oscillator used to generate the transmit frequency. The stability of the frequency lock loop was investigated and changes to the design were reviewed to alleviate the potential loss of data due the loop losing lock and entering the reacquisition mode.
