(To define Francoise Sagan’s artistic method a complex analysis of the problems, main conflicts, characters and the
structure of the investigated novel is made. The theme of the novel is defined as solitude in a love affair caused by estrangement which appears even between those who are eager to be a couple. The psychoanalytical efforts of the author are aimed at the understanding of the reasons for this phenomenon. The selfish tendencies of the character and the urge towards personal freedom are pointed out as things ruining relations. Two conflicts are singled out: the conflict between two absolutely different psychological types of personality and the inner conflict of the main character between his love which presupposes
dependence and his yearning for independence and personal freedom. Psychological incompatibility of the main characters is shown through their ability of making a choice and through their different treatment of people and situations. The author accents the influence of the surroundings on the protagonist, Gilles, a typical Bohemian. The main heroine is not a typical one. She is intelligent, uncompromising, passionate, exalted maximalist. These two love each other but it leads them to the tragedy instead of happiness. The idea of absurdity runs through the entire book. The characters are introspective, inclined to depression. All this testifies to the existence of both the features of the realistic trend (the influence of the social surroundings on the main character, cognitive analytical principle, artistic selection) and the features of existentialism (the problem of choice, the problem of personal freedom, the problem of estrangement, the idea of absurdity, the sensitive characters inclined
to self-analysis and psychoanalysis). A conclusion is made that a kind of interpenetration of realism and existentialism is observed in this novel.
In a functionalist perspective, values are a cognitive expression of human needs as well as principles that guide behaviors to personal, social or general life goals, whose psychosocial impact deserves more investigation. Performance of Long Modules of Silicon Microstrip Detectors
This note describes the performance of modules assembled with up to twelve silicon microstrip detectors. These modules were built for the instrumented Silicon Target (STAR) that has been installed in the NOMAD spectrometer. Laboratory and test beam results are compared with model predictions. For a module of nine detectors, test beam results indicate a signal--to--noise ratio of 19, a hit finding efficiency of 99.8\% and a spatial resolution of 6.0 m. Laboratory measurements indicate that modules of twelve detectors exhibit a signal--to--noise ratio of the order of 16
The lived experiences of experienced Vipassana Mahasi meditators: an interpretative phenomenological analysis.
Research into the effects and mechanisms of mindfulness training draws predominantly on quantitative research. There is a lack of understanding about the subjective experiences of experienced mindfulness meditators, which may provide additional insights into the effects, processes and context of mindfulness training. This qualitative study explored the lived experiences of a novel group of experienced mindfulness meditators who practise Vipassana Mahasi (VM) meditation. The study aimed to understand how experienced VM practitioners make sense of the effects of practice and what processes they ascribe to it. Participants attended semistructured interviews, and their responses were analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis. Results yielded overarching themes including (a) improvements in hedonic and eudaimonic well-being; (b) insights into self, others and perception of reality; (c) attaining equanimity; and (d) physical and interpersonal difficulties. Participants perceived VM as a ‘cleansing’ process whereby maladaptive responses were eliminated through mindfulness, other supportive mental qualities, decentering and nonattachment. The findings revealed a complex and dynamic set of interdependent outcomes and processes, which are reinforced by Buddhist teachings and ethical practices. This study highlights the need for additional interdisciplinary research into topics such as insight generation and supportive mental qualities cultivated during VM, novel states of well-being informed by Buddhist constructs and interpersonal difficulties related to long-term practice. Findings also suggest that incorporating Buddhist teachings and ethics into mindfulness-based interventions may enhance practitioner understanding and implementation of meditation techniques.N/
The ATLAS Transition Radiation Tracker (TRT) proportional drift tube: design and performance
A straw proportional counter is the basic element of the ATLAS Transition Radiation Tracker (TRT). Its detailed properties as well as the main properties of a few TRT operating gas mixtures are described. Particular attention is paid to straw tube performance in high radiation conditions and to its operational stability
The ATLAS TRT electronics
The ATLAS inner detector consists of three sub-systems: the pixel detector spanning the radius range 4cm-20cm, the semiconductor tracker at radii from 30 to 52 cm, and the transition radiation tracker (TRT), tracking from 56 to 107 cm. The TRT provides a combination of continuous tracking with many projective measurements based on individual drift tubes (or straws) and of electron identification based on transition radiation from fibres or foils interleaved between the straws themselves. This paper describes the on and off detector electronics for the TRT as well as the TRT portion of the data acquisition (DAQ) system
The impact of positive psychological interventions on well-being in healthy elderly people
This systematic review aims to evaluate the impact of Positive Psychological Interventions (PPIs) on well-being in healthy older adults. Systematic review of PPIs obtained from three electronic databases (PsycINFO, Scopus, and Web of Science) was undertaken. Inclusion criteria were: that they were positive psychology intervention, included measurement of well-being, participants were aged over 60 years, and the studies were in English. The Cochrane Collaboration Guidelines dimensions of quality control, randomization, comparability, follow-up rate, dropout, blinding assessors are used to rate the quality of studies by two reviewers independently. The RE-AIM (Reach, Efficacy, Adoption, Implementation, and Maintenance) for evaluation of PPIs effectiveness was also applied. The final review included eight articles, each describing a positive psychological intervention study. The reminiscence interventions were the most prevalent type of PPIs to promote and maintain well-being in later life. Only two studies were rated as high quality, four were of moderate-quality and two were of low-quality. Overall results indicated that efficacy criteria (89%), reach criteria (85%), adoption criteria (73%), implementation criteria (67%), and maintenance criteria (4%) across a variety of RE-AIM dimensions. Directions for future positive psychological research related to RE-AIM, and implications for decision-making, are described
The NOMAD Experiment at the CERN SPS
The NOMAD experiment is a short base-line search for νμ − ντ oscillations in the CERN neutrino beam. The ντ's are searched for through their charged current interactions followed by the observation of the resulting τ− through its electronic, muonic or hadronic decays. These decays are recognized using kinematical criteria necessitating the use of a light target which enables the reconstruction of individual particles produced in the neutrino interactions. This paper describes the various components of the NOMAD detector: the target and muon drift chambers, the electromagnetic and hadronic calorimeters, the preshower and transition radiation detectors and the veto and trigger scintillation counters. The beam and data acquisition system are also described. The quality of the reconstruction and individual particles is demonstrated through the ability of NOMAD to observe Ks0's, Λ0's and π0's. Finally, the observation of τ− through its electronic decay being one of the most promising channels in the search, the identification of electrons in NOMAD is discussed
