    Functional Relaxation and Guided Imagery as Complementary Therapy in Asthma: A Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial

    Background: Asthma is a frequently disabling and almost invariably distressing disease that has a high overall prevalence. Although relaxation techniques and hypnotherapeutic interventions have proven their effectiveness in numerous trials, relaxation therapies are still not recommended in treatment guidelines due to a lack of methodological quality in many of the trials. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the efficacy of the brief relaxation technique of functional relaxation (FR) and guided imagery (GI) in adult asthmatics in a randomized controlled trial. Methods: 64 patients with extrinsic bronchial asthma were treated over a 4-week period and assessed at baseline, after treatment and after 4 months, for follow-up. 16 patients completed FR, 14 GI, 15 both FR and GI (FR/GI) and 13 received a placebo relaxation technique as the control intervention (CI). The forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV 1) as well as the specific airway resistance (sR(aw)) were employed as primary outcome measures. Results: Participation in FR, GI and FR/GI led to increases in FEV 1 (% predicted) of 7.6 +/- 13.2, 3.3 +/- 9.8, and 8.3 +/- 21.0, respectively, as compared to -1.8 +/- 11.1 in the CI group at the end of the therapy. After follow-up, the increases in FEV 1 were 6.9 +/- 10.3 in the FR group, 4.4 +/- 7.3 in the GI and 4.5 +/- 8.1 in the FR/GI, compared to -2.8 +/- 9.2 in the CI. Improvements in sR(aw) (% predicted) were in keeping with the changes in FEV 1 in all groups. Conclusions: Our study confirms a positive effect of FR on respiratory parameters and suggests a clinically relevant long-term benefit from FR as a nonpharmacological and complementary therapy treatment option.     Leading edge vortex formation and detachment on a flat plate undergoing simultaneous pitching and plunging motion: Experimental and computational study

    This study focuses on the formation and detachment of a leading edge vortex (LEV) appearing on an airfoil when its effective angle of attack is dynamically changed, inducing additional forces and moments on the airfoil. Experimental measurements of the time-resolved velocity field using Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) are complemented by a computational study using an URANS (Unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes) framework. In this framework a transition-sensitive Reynolds-stress model of turbulence, proposed by Maduta et al. (2018), which combines the near-wall Reynolds-Stress model by Jakirlic and Maduta (2015) and a phenomenological transition model governing the pre-turbulent kinetic energy by Walters and Cokljat (2008), is employed. Combined pitching and plunging kinematics of the investigated flat plate airfoil enable the effective inflow angle to be arbitrarily prescribed. A qualitative assessment of flow fields and a quantitative comparison of LEV characteristics in terms of its center position and circulation as well as an investigation of the mechanism causing the vortex to stop accumulating circulation revealed close agreement between the experimental and simulation results. Further considerations of the lift contribution from the pressure and suction side of the airfoil to the overall lift indicates that the qualitative lift evolution is reproduced even if the pressure side contribution is neglected. This reveals important characteristics of such airfoil dynamics, which can be exploited in future experimental studies, where direct aerodynamic force and moment measurements are greatly inhibited by dominating inertial forces

    A systematic review of the unique prospective association of negative affect symptoms and adolescent substance use controlling for externalizing symptoms.

    This systematic review examines whether negative affect symptoms (i.e., anxiety, depression, and internalizing symptoms more broadly) predict subsequent adolescent substance use after controlling for co-occurring externalizing symptoms. Following PRISMA procedures, we identified 61 studies that tested the association of interest. Findings varied depending on the type of negative affect symptom and to some extent on the substance use outcome. The most consistent associations were evident for depressive symptoms, particularly as predictors of substance use composite scores. No clear association between anxiety and substance use or between internalizing symptoms and substance use was evident, and indeed these associations were as often negative as positive. Mixed findings regarding the depression-substance use association, however, also call for greater attention to potential moderating factors that may help define who, when, and in what context depression serves as an important risk factor for later substance use above and beyond risk associated with externalizing symptoms

    The Use of Latent Trajectory Models in Psychopathology Research.

    Despite the recent surge in the development of powerful modeling strategies to test questions about individual differences in stability and change over time, these methods are not currently widely used in psychopathology research. In an attempt to further the dissemination of these new methods, the authors present a pedagogical introduction to the structural equation modeling based latent trajectory model, or LTM. They review several different types of LTMs, discuss matching an optimal LTM to a given question of interest, and highlight several issues that might be particularly salient for research in psychopathology. The authors augment each section with a review of published applications of these methods in psychopathology-related research to demonstrate the implementation and interpretation of LTMs in practice

    Integrative data analysis: The simultaneous analysis of multiple data sets.

    Both quantitative and methodological techniques exist that foster the development and maintenance of a cumulative knowledge base within the psychological sciences. Most noteworthy of these techniques is meta-analysis which allows for the synthesis of summary statistics drawn from multiple studies when the original data are not available. However, when the original data can be obtained from multiple studies, many advantages stem from the statistical analysis of the pooled data. The authors define integrative data analysis (IDA) as the analysis of multiple data sets that have been pooled into one. Although variants of IDA have been incorporated into other scientific disciplines, the use of these techniques are much less evident in psychology. In this paper the authors present an overview of IDA as it may be applied within the psychological sciences; a discussion of the relative advantages and disadvantages of IDA; a description of analytic strategies for analyzing pooled individual data; and offer recommendations for the use of IDA in practice

    This introduction to the Special Issue on Parenting Adolescents in an Increasingly Diverse World explores how increasing population diversity may provide a context for changes in the parenting of adolescents. In this issue, authors (1) explore the context for asking questions about parenting adolescents and diversity, (2) consider parents, adolescents, and parenting in different diversity contexts, and (3) reflect on crosscutting themes. Two articles examine the parenting in an international context and within changing domestic demographics. Four articles focus on parenting adolescents in traditionally marginalized groups with the goal of identifying lessons for supporting all youth in navigating an increasingly diverse world. Finally, two articles synthesize these articles to suggest important directions for future research

    Psychometric approaches for developing commensurate measures across independent studies: Traditional and new models.

    When conducting an integrative analysis of data obtained from multiple independent studies, a fundamental problem is to establish commensurate measures for the constructs of interest. Fortunately, procedures for evaluating and establishing measurement equivalence across samples are well developed for the linear factor model and commonly used item response theory models. A newly proposed moderated nonlinear factor analysis model generalizes these models and procedures, allowing for items of different scale types (continuous or discrete) and differential item functioning across levels of categorical and/or continuous variables. The potential of this new model to resolve the problem of measurement in integrative data analysis is shown via an empirical example examining changes in alcohol involvement from age 10 to 22 across two longitudinal studies
