The vacuum infusion is a process usually applied to manufacture large structures of composite materials, such as wind turbine blades. The specific stiffness and weight ratio required by these structures can be achieved by manufacturing sandwich composites. The forecast by numerical simulation of the resin infusion flow is an indispensable tool to design and optimize the manufacturing process of composite. Present work analyzes by numerical simulation the mold filling process of a sandwich composites, performed by fiberglass plies with different fiber orientations and a perforated core. The flow through a single perforation of the core is analyzed and the influence of the permeability values of fiberglass on the volume flow through core perforations is determined. In order to reduce the computing costs, a transfer function to simulate the flow through the perforations is developed and integrated in the numerical code by computational subroutines. A 3D numerical modeling of a sandwich composite, in which the flow through the core perforations is simulated via computational subroutines, is carried out and experimentally validated. The research work presented in this paper has been carried out under the project "Automation of the global manufacturing process for wind turbine blades (AQ–BLADE)" IDI‐20110154, financially supported by Centro para el Desarrollo Tecnológico Industrial (CDTI) from the Spanish Government

The vacuum infusion (VI) is a process usually applied to manufacture large structures of composite materials, such as wind turbine blades. Present work analyzes the macroscopic resin ow through a laminate of fiberglass plies with different orientations, during the filling stage of the VI process to manufacture two different pieces. The pressure inside the mold, velocity vectors and the resin inlet mass flow are studied through a 3D numerical modeling under non-steady conditions validated experimentally. The numerical model simulates each ply of the laminate like an individual porous media and takes into account the stacking sequence of the laminate. The influence of the permeability values of the distribution media and the fiberglass laminate on the evolution of resin infusion is analyzed. The numerical model reproduces the effects of the stacking sequence and race-tracking on the resin flow front. The research work presented in this paper has been carried out under the project "Automation of the global manufacturing process for wind turbine blades (AQ{BLADE)" IDI{20110154, nancially supported by Centro para el Desarrollo Tecn ologico Industrial (CDTI) from the Spanish Government

Benidorm is identified as one of the main tourist destinations in Spain, proved by its number of hotels, close to 150 with 60.000 beds. In addition, this city provides 350.000 apartments for tourists, considered their second residence. Benidorm is geographically located in the southeast cost of the Iberian Peninsula, surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea and well known as Costa Blanca. The early development of Benidorm as a tourist destination started in the 50’s and through the years, Benidorm has been forced to adapt its self to new requirements of its main visitors. Therefore, due the number of years that Benidorm is known as a holiday destination and adding the current economic crisis, this city has to face important changes in order to continue being considered a successful and updated tourist destination in Spain. This article focuses its main objective to understand the problems and aspects to be improved. To do so, the authors have done close to 30 interviews to stakeholders directly involved within the tourism industry. From the responses obtained, the authors have done a depth analysis concluding that Benidorm needs to act in different but significant aspects. For example, the image should be improved, needing important investments. It is important to emphasize the riskiness described by the interviewees with reference to the dependence of Benidorm to two types of tourists, English visitors and the senior tourists. Additionally, the number of hotels in Benidorm is considered a privilege but the quality of the service provided is far from exceeding the expectations. And last but not least, in relation to those human resources working for the tourism industry, the responses were unanimous, failing in terms of qualification and salaries. This article is the result of the work done in the Project R+D+i: “The social perception of tourism within the Valencian community. Sociological analysis and futurology”. Ref. CSO2009-10293 (sub-GEOG) awarded by the Ministry of Science and Innovation, led by Tomás Mazón

CrossFit® is a high-intensity sport that combines weightlifting, gymnastic skills, and cardiovascular exercises. To find the anthropometric references that define the optimal body composition, it is essential to first find an optimal body composition for one’s physical preparation. The objective of this study is to describe the anthropometric characteristics of 27 Spanish CrossFit® athletes, 19 males aged 39 years old (24–44) and 8 females aged 28 years old (23–40), and how these characteristics influenced their performance. The athletes performed the Fran, Cindy, and Kelly workouts, establishing minimum marks, and the CrossFit Total workout to assess maximum strength. Significant differences were not found in time and repetitions between sexes in skill training, although there was a positive correlation r = 0.876 (p < 0.001) between muscle mass and the Total CrossFit result. We can conclude that the CrossFit® athlete has a low amount of fat mass and a small relative size, which is an advantage when training with bodyweight exercises, and a high muscle mass that provide benefits when strength training. In addition, despite executing movements from a multitude of disciplines, the physical demands for lifting heavy loads resulted in the anthropometric values of athletes being more similar to elite weightlifting athletes than in other sports

Evidence accumulated to date about the relationship between cognitive impairments and adults who are overweight and obese suggests that excess weight has a great impact on memory function. Nevertheless, most of the literature has focused only on studying the influences on working memory and episodic memory. This study aimed to examine the potential associations of clinical and anthropometric measures [body mass index (BMI), WHR, body fat, visceral fat, muscle mass, and hypertension] with six memory domains, including contextual memory, short-term visual memory, short-term memory, non-verbal memory, short-term phonological memory, and working memory, in a sample of 124 individuals classified as overweight (n = 33), obese (n = 53), and normal weight (n = 38). The results obtained showed that, after controlling for employment situations, people classified as obese had poorer short-term phonological memory and working memory than those with normal weights. Bivariate correlations showed that measures of weight, BMI, waist–hip ratio index, body fat, and visceral fat were inversely associated with memory function. However, muscle mass was not a significant predictor of memory function. Higher systolic blood pressure was also associated with worse memory function. The study provides evidence of the importance of adiposity in health and memory function. This work was partially funded by the Spanish Government (TIN2017-89069-R and PID2020-119144RB-100)

Undernutrition Risk Assessment in Elderly People: Available Tools in Clinical Practice

    Get PDF
Undernutrition is a public health problem all over the world. More than 30 million people are currently affected by undernutrition in Europe, mainly hospitalized or elderly people. Undernutrition has several medical consequences and in the elderly can be associated with adverse clinical symptoms, contributing to frailty, morbidity, hospitalization, and mortality. These medical situations highlight the importance of an early detection and diagnosis, the objective being to prevent or treat undernutrition. This is why the implementation of a complete nutritional assessment in clinical practice is important. Nutritional screenings are essential tools to identify patients that will likely benefit from nutrition therapy. There are currently several screening methods to identify nutritional risk or malnutrition. However, the lack of a standard has aroused controversy about the best tool to use. Our objective is to describe the screening tools available for the elderly
