    Techniques for measuring weight bearing during standing and walking

    OBJECTIVE: To classify and assess techniques for measuring the amount of weight bearing during standing and walking.BACKGROUND: A large variety of weight bearing measuring techniques exists. This review describes their advantages and limitations to assist clinicians and researchers in selecting a technique for their specific application in measuring weight bearing.METHODS: A literature search was performed in Pubmed-Medline, CINAHL, and EMBASE. Measurement techniques were classified in 'clinical examination', 'scales', 'biofeedback systems', 'ambulatory devices' and 'platforms', and assessed on aspects of methodological quality, application, and feasibility.RESULTS: A total of 68 related articles was evaluated. The clinical examination technique is a crude method to estimate the amount of weight bearing. Scales are useful for static measurements to evaluate symmetry in weight bearing. Biofeedback systems give more reliable, accurate and objective data on weight bearing compared to clinical examination and scales, but the high costs could limit their use in physical therapy departments. The ambulatory devices can measure weight bearing with good accuracy and reliability in the hospital and at home. Platforms have the best methodological quality, but are mostly restricted to a gait laboratory, need trained personnel, and are expensive.CONCLUSIONS: The choice of a technique largely depends upon the criteria discussed in this review; however the clinical utilisation, the research question posed, and the available budget also play a role. The new developments seen in the field of 'ambulatory devices' are aimed at extending measuring time, and improved practicality in data collection and data analysis. For these latter devices, however, mainly preliminary studies have been published about devices that are not (yet) commercially available.</p

    Monitoring postures and motions of hospitalized patients using sensor technology:a scoping review

    Background: Sensor technology could provide solutions to monitor postures and motions and to help hospital patients reach their rehabilitation goals with minimal supervision. Synthesized information on device applications and methodology is lacking. Objectives: The purpose of this scoping review was to provide an overview of device applications and methodological approaches to monitor postures and motions in hospitalized patients using sensor technology. Methods: A systematic search of Embase, Medline, Web of Science and Google Scholar was completed in February 2023 and updated in March 2024. Included studies described populations of hospitalized adults with short admission periods and interventions that use sensor technology to objectively monitor postures and motions. Study selection was performed by two authors independently of each other. Data extraction and narrative analysis focused on the applications and methodological approaches of included articles using a personalized standard form to extract information on device, measurement and analysis characteristics of included studies and analyse frequencies and usage. Results: A total of 15.032 articles were found and 49 articles met the inclusion criteria. Devices were most often applied in older adults (n = 14), patients awaiting or after surgery (n = 14), and stroke (n = 6). The main goals were gaining insight into patient physical behavioural patterns (n = 19) and investigating physical behaviour in relation to other parameters such as muscle strength or hospital length of stay (n = 18). The studies had heterogeneous study designs and lacked completeness in reporting on device settings, data analysis, and algorithms. Information on device settings, data analysis, and algorithms was poorly reported. Conclusions: Studies on monitoring postures and motions are heterogeneous in their population, applications and methodological approaches. More uniformity and transparency in methodology and study reporting would improve reproducibility, interpretation and generalization of results. Clear guidelines for reporting and the collection and sharing of raw data would benefit the field by enabling study comparison and reproduction.</p

    First record of the bacterial endosymbiont Wolbachia for phytophagous hoverflies from genus Merodon (Diptera : Syrphidae)

    Wolbachia is a widespread bacterial endosymbiont among arthropod species. It influences the reproduction of the host species and also mitochondrial DNA diversity. Until now there were only a few studies that detected Wolbachia infections in hoverflies (Diptera: Syrphidae), and this is the first broader study with the aim of examining the incidence of Wolbachia in the hoverfly genus Merodon. The obtained results indicate an infection rate of 96% and the presence of both Wolbachia supergroup A and B, which are characteristic for most of the infected arthropod species. Additionally, the presence of multiple Wolbachia strains in the Merodon aureus group species was detected and the mitochondrial DNA COI-based relationships of the group are discussed in the light of infection. Finally, we discuss plant-mediated horizontal transmission of Wolbachia strains among the studied hoverfly species.Peer reviewe

    Energy expenditure in chronic stroke patients playing Wii Sports: a pilot study

    Background: Stroke is one of the leading causes of long-term disability in modern western countries. Stroke survivors often have functional limitations which might lead to a vicious circle of reduced physical activity, deconditioning and further physical deterioration. Current evidence suggests that routine moderate- or vigorous-intensity physical activity is essential for maintenance and improvement of health among stroke survivors. Nevertheless, long-term participation in physical activities is low among people with disabilities. Active video games, such as Nintendo Wii Sports, might maintain interest and improve long-term participation in physical activities; however, the intensity of physical activity among chronic stroke patients while playing Wii Sports is unknown. We investigated the energy expenditure of chronic stroke patients while playing Wii Sports tennis and boxing. Methods: Ten chronic ([greater than or equal to] 6 months) stroke patients comprising a convenience sample, who were able to walk independently on level ground, were recruited from a rehabilitation centre. They were instructed to play Wii Sports tennis and boxing in random order for 15 minutes each, with a 10-minute break between games. A portable gas analyzer was used to measure oxygen uptake (VO2) during sitting and during Wii Sports game play. Energy expenditure was expressed in metabolic equivalents (METs), calculated as VO2 during Wii Sports divided by VO2 during sitting. We classified physical activity as moderate (3-6 METs) or vigorous (>6 METs) according to the American College of Sports Medicine and the American Heart Association Guidelines. Results: Among the 10 chronic stroke patients, 3 were unable to play tennis because they had problems with timing of hitting the ball, and 2 were excluded from the boxing group because of a technical problem with the portable gas analyzer. The mean ([plus/minus]SD) energy expenditure during Wii Sports game play was 3.7 ([plus/minus]0.6) METs for tennis and 4.1 ([plus/minus]0.7) METs for boxing. All 8 participants who played boxing and 6 of the 7 who played tennis attained energy expenditures >3 METs. Conclusions: With the exception of one patient in the tennis group, chronic stroke patients played Wii Sports tennis and boxing at moderate-intensity, sufficient for maintaining and improving health in this population

    In deriving elevation change rates (d&lt;I&gt;H&lt;/I&gt;/d&lt;I&gt;t&lt;/I&gt;) from radar altimetry, the slope-induced error is usually assumed to cancel out in repeat measurements. These measurements, however, represent a location that can be significantly further upslope than assumed, causing an underestimate of the basin-integrated volume change. In a case-study for the fast-flowing part of Jakobshavn Isbræ, we show that a relatively straightforward correction for slope-induced error increases elevation change rates by up to several metres per year and significantly reduces the volume change error with respect to laser altimetry for the area of interest

    The land-ice contribution to 21st-century dynamic sea level rise

    Climate change has the potential to influence global mean sea level through a number of processes including (but not limited to) thermal expansion of the oceans and enhanced land ice melt. In addition to their contribution to global mean sea level change, these two processes (among others) lead to local departures from the global mean sea level change, through a number of mechanisms including the effect on spatial variations in the change of water density and transport, usually termed dynamic sea level changes. In this study, we focus on the component of dynamic sea level change that might be given by additional freshwater inflow to the ocean under scenarios of 21st-century land-based ice melt. We present regional patterns of dynamic sea level change given by a global-coupled atmosphere–ocean climate model forced by spatially and temporally varying projected ice-melt fluxes from three sources: the Antarctic ice sheet, the Greenland Ice Sheet and small glaciers and ice caps. The largest ice melt flux we consider is equivalent to almost 0.7m of global mean sea level rise over the 21st century. The temporal evolution of the dynamic sea level changes, in the presence of considerable variations in the ice melt flux, is also analysed. We find that the dynamic sea level change associated with the ice melt is small, with the largest changes occurring in the North Atlantic amounting to 3 cm above the global mean rise. Furthermore, the dynamic sea level change associated with the ice melt is similar regardless of whether the simulated ice fluxes are applied to a simulation with fixed CO2 or under a business-as-usual greenhouse gas warming scenario of increasing CO2

    Veel Friese afasiepatiënten beheersen het Fries beter dan het Nederlands. Tot nu toe waren er geen Friestalige instrumenten om de taal- en communicatieproblemen van deze afasiepatiënten te diagnosticeren. In een samenwerkingsproject van de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen en Revalidatie Friesland zijn de Akense Afasietest en Amsterdam-Nijmegen Test voor Alledaagse Taalvaardigheid bewerkt voor het Fries. De Nederlandse- en Friestalige versies zijn afgenomen bij een groot aantal gezonde en afatische tweetalige sprekers. Het blijkt dat op de productieve onderdelen verschillen bestaan in het functioneren van de tweetalige proefpersonen: hun prestaties op de Friestalige versies zijn significant beter dan op de Nederlandstalige
