Godâs Extended Mind
The traditional doctrine of divine omniscience ascribes to God the fully exercised power to know all truths. but why is Godâs excellence with respect to knowing not treated on a par with his excellence with respect to doing, where the latter requires only that God have the power to do all things? The prima facie problem with divine âomni-knowledgeabilityâ -- roughly, being able to know whatever one wants to know whenever one wants to know it -- is that knowledge requires an internal representation, whereas mere âknowledgeabilityâ does not. I argue to the contrary that knowledge does not require an internal representation, and that even if it did, an omni-knowledgeable God would satisfy this requirement. omni-knowledgeability therefore represents a distinct understanding of Godâs cognitive excellence while satisfying the traditional insistence on full omniscience
Web interfaces to enhance CAL materials: Case studies from law and statistics
One impact of the âinformation ageâ is that a variety of new learning resources have become available to both students and tutors. Using these resources effectively and with a sound pedagogical basis presents a whole array of issues for teaching professionals. In this paper the authors describe the development and implementation of a Web interface to existing computerâbased learning materials in an attempt to enhance the student learning experience. Although the innovations occurred in two very different disciplines âstatistics and law â there are common lessons to be learned about the process of learning and the use of technology
Asymmetries arising from the space-filling nature of vascular networks
Cardiovascular networks span the body by branching across many generations of
vessels. The resulting structure delivers blood over long distances to supply
all cells with oxygen via the relatively short-range process of diffusion at
the capillary level. The structural features of the network that accomplish
this density and ubiquity of capillaries are often called space-filling. There
are multiple strategies to fill a space, but some strategies do not lead to
biologically adaptive structures by requiring too much construction material or
space, delivering resources too slowly, or using too much power to move blood
through the system. We empirically measure the structure of real networks (18
humans and 1 mouse) and compare these observations with predictions of model
networks that are space-filling and constrained by a few guiding biological
principles. We devise a numerical method that enables the investigation of
space-filling strategies and determination of which biological principles
influence network structure. Optimization for only a single principle creates
unrealistic networks that represent an extreme limit of the possible structures
that could be observed in nature. We first study these extreme limits for two
competing principles, minimal total material and minimal path lengths. We
combine these two principles and enforce various thresholds for balance in the
network hierarchy, which provides a novel approach that highlights the
trade-offs faced by biological networks and yields predictions that better

Math anxiety, intrusive thoughts and performance: Exploring the relationship between mathematics anxiety and performance: The role of intrusive thoughts
The current study examined the relationship between math anxiety and arithmetic performance by focusing on intrusive thoughts experienced during problem solving. Participants (N = 122) performed two-digit addition problems on a verification task. Math anxiety significantly predicted response time and error rate. Further, the extent to which intrusive thoughts impeded calculation mediated the relationship between math anxiety and per cent of errors on problems involving a carry operation. Moreover, results indicated that participants experienced a range of intrusive thoughts and these were related to significantly higher levels of math anxiety. The findings lend support to a deficient inhibition account of the math anxiety-to-performance relationship and highlight the importance of considering intrusive thoughts in future work
A summary of terminology used in tephra-related studies
The word âtephraâ, derived from a Greek word for ash, is a collective term for all the unconsolidated, primary pyroclastic products of a volcanic eruption. We summarise here the meanings and applicability of this and related terms, including tephrostratigraphy, tephrochronology, tephrochronometry, tephrology, and cryptotephra. These and other tephra-based terms, some of which are erroneous or unnecessary, have been used in a wide range of stratigraphic and paleoenvironmental disciplines and in archaeology
UKERC Review of evidence for the rebound effect: Technical report 3: Elasticity of substitution studies
This Working Paper forms part of the TPAâs assessment of evidence for a rebound effect from improved energy efficiency. Technical Report 3 focuses upon empirical estimates of the elasticity of substitution between energy and capital. This parameter has been identified as a key determinant of the likely magnitude of the rebound effect in different sectors. The report clarifies the meaning and importance of this parameter, summarises and compares empirical estimates of this parameter, evaluates the reasons that have been proposed for the differing results, discusses whether a consensus has been reached to whether energy and capital can be considered as âsubstitutesâ or âcomplementsâ and draws some implications for the rebound effect
Use of Baited Pitfall Traps for Monitoring Pales Weevil, \u3ci\u3eHylobius Pales\u3c/i\u3e (Coleoptera: Curculionidae)
Pitfall traps baited with ethanol and turpentine serve as an effective tool for monitoring pales weevil (Hylobius pales) populations. Males and females are equally attracted to this bait. Neither component alone showed any attractiveness. The presence of a pine stem for weevil feeding does not affect the number or sex ratio of captured weevils. The potential of using attraction to baited traps as a sampling method for pales weevil is discussed
