Further analytical study of hybrid rocket combustion
Analytical studies of the transient and steady-state combustion processes in a hybrid rocket system are discussed. The particular system chosen consists of a gaseous oxidizer flowing within a tube of solid fuel, resulting in a heterogeneous combustion. Finite rate chemical kinetics with appropriate reaction mechanisms were incorporated in the model. A temperature dependent Arrhenius type fuel surface regression rate equation was chosen for the current study. The governing mathematical equations employed for the reacting gas phase and for the solid phase are the general, two-dimensional, time-dependent conservation equations in a cylindrical coordinate system. Keeping the simplifying assumptions to a minimum, these basic equations were programmed for numerical computation, using two implicit finite-difference schemes, the Lax-Wendroff scheme for the gas phase, and, the Crank-Nicolson scheme for the solid phase
IL-33 ameliorates Alzheimer’s disease-like pathology and cognitive decline
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a devastating condition with no known effective treatment. AD is characterized by memory loss as well as impaired locomotor ability, reasoning, and judgment. Emerging evidence suggests that the innate immune response plays a major role in the pathogenesis of AD. In AD, the accumulation of β-amyloid (Aβ) in the brain perturbs physiological functions of the brain, including synaptic and neuronal dysfunction, microglial activation, and neuronal loss. Serum levels of soluble ST2 (sST2), a decoy receptor for interleukin (IL)-33, increase in patients with mild cognitive impairment, suggesting that impaired IL-33/ST2 signaling may contribute to the pathogenesis of AD. Therefore, we investigated the potential therapeutic role of IL-33 in AD, using transgenic mouse models. Here we report that IL-33 administration reverses synaptic plasticity impairment and memory deficits in APP/PS1 mice. IL-33 administration reduces soluble Aβ levels and amyloid plaque deposition by promoting the recruitment and Aβ phagocytic activity of microglia; this is mediated by ST2/p38 signaling activation. Furthermore, IL-33 injection modulates the innate immune response by polarizing microglia/macrophages toward an antiinflammatory phenotype and reducing the expression of proinflammatory genes, including IL-1β, IL-6, and NLRP3, in the cortices of APP/PS1 mice. Collectively, our results demonstrate a potential therapeutic role for IL-33 in AD
The effect of typhoon on particulate organic carbon flux in the southern East China Sea
Severe tropical storms play an important role in triggering phytoplankton blooms, but the extent to which such storms influence biogenic carbon flux from the euphotic zone is unclear. In 2008, typhoon Fengwong provided a unique opportunity to study the in situ biological responses including phytoplankton blooms and particulate organic carbon fluxes associated with a severe storm in the southern East China Sea (SECS). After passage of the typhoon, the sea surface temperature (SST) in the SECS was markedly cooler (∼25 to 26 °C) than before typhoon passage (∼28 to 29 °C). The POC flux 5 days after passage of the typhoon was 265 ± 14 mg C m−2 d−1, which was ∼1.7-fold that (140–180 mg C m−2 d−1) recorded during a period (June–August, 2007) when no typhoons occurred. A somewhat smaller but nevertheless significant increase in POC flux (224–225 mg C m−2 d−1) was detected following typhoon Sinlaku which occurred approximately 1 month after typhoon Fengwong, indicating that typhoon events can increase biogenic carbon flux efficiency in the SECS. Remarkably, phytoplankton uptake accounted for only about 5% of the nitrate injected into the euphotic zone by typhoon Fengwong. It is likely that phytoplankton population growth was constrained by a combination of light limitation and grazing pressure. Modeled estimates of new/export production were remarkably consistent with the average of new and export production following typhoon Fengwong. The same model suggested that during non-typhoon conditions approximately half of the export of organic carbon occurs via convective mixing of dissolved organic carbon, a conclusion consistent with earlier work at comparable latitudes in the open ocean
Nanomechanical-resonator-assisted induced transparency in a Cooper-pair-box system
We propose a scheme to demonstrate the electromagnetically induced
transparency (EIT) in a system of a superconducting Cooper-pair box coupled to
a nanomechanical resonator. In this scheme, the nanomechanical resonator plays
an important role to contribute additional auxiliary energy levels to the
Cooper-pair box so that the EIT phenomenon could be realized in such a system.
We call it here resonator-assisted induced transparency (RAIT). This RAIT
technique provides a detection scheme in a real experiment to measure physical
properties, such as the vibration frequency and the decay rate, of the coupled
nanomechanical resonator.Comment: To appear in New Journal of Physics: Special Issue "Mechanical

A Close Binary Star Resolved from Occultation by 87 Sylvia
The star BD+29 1748 was resolved to be a close binary from its occultation by
the asteroid 87 Sylvia on 2006 December 18 UT. Four telescopes were used to
observe this event at two sites separated by some 80 km apart. Two flux drops
were observed at one site, whereas only one flux drop was detected at the
other. From the long-term variation of Sylvia, we inferred the probable shape
of the shadow during the occultation, and this in turn constrains the binary
parameters: the two components of BD+29 1748 have a projected separation of
0.097" to 0.110" on the sky with a position angle 104 deg to 107 deg. The
asteroid was clearly resolved with a size scale ranging from 130 to 290 km, as
projected onto the occultation direction. No occultation was detected for
either of the two known moonlets of 87 Sylvia.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables; submitted to the PAS
Stereotactic ablative radiotherapy for medically inoperable early stage lung cancer: early outcomes
Objective To evaluate the clinical outcome and safety of stereotactic ablative radiotherapy for medically inoperable stage I non- small-cell lung carcinoma. Design Retrospective case series. Setting Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital, Hong Kong. Patients All patients with medically inoperable stage I non-small-cell lung carcinoma receiving stereotactic ablative radiotherapy since its establishment in 2008. Main outcome measures Disease control rate, overall survival, and treatment toxicities. Results Sixteen stage I non-small-cell lung carcinoma patients underwent the procedure from June 2008 to November 2011. The median patient age was 82 years and the majority (81%) had moderate-tosevere co-morbidity based on the Adult Comorbidity Evaluation 27 index. With a median follow-up of 22 months, the 2-year primary tumour control rate, disease-free survival and overall survival rates were 91%, 71% and 87%, respectively. No grade 3 (National Cancer Institute Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events) or higher treatment-related complications were reported. Conclusion Stereotactic ablative radiotherapy can achieve a high degree of local control safely in medically inoperable patients with early lung cancer.published_or_final_versio
On the new massive gravity and AdS/CFT
Demanding the existence of a simple holographic -theorem, it is shown that
a general (parity preserving) theory of gravity in 2+1 dimensions involving
upto four derivative curvature invariants reduces to the new massive gravity
theory. We consider extending the theory including upto six derivative
curvature invariants. Black hole solutions are presented and consistency with
1+1 CFTs is checked. We present evidence that bulk unitarity is still in
conflict with a positive CFT central charge for generic choice of parameters.
However, for a special choice of parameters appearing in the four and six
derivative terms reduces the linearized equations to be two derivative, thereby
ameliorating the unitarity problem.Comment: 16 pages, 2 figures. v4: typo correcte
Versatile transporter apparatus for experiments with optically trapped Bose-Einstein condensates
We describe a versatile and simple scheme for producing magnetically and
optically-trapped Rb-87 Bose-Einstein condensates, based on a moving-coil
transporter apparatus. The apparatus features a TOP trap that incorporates the
movable quadrupole coils used for magneto-optical trapping and long-distance
magnetic transport of atomic clouds. As a stand-alone device, this trap allows
for the stable production of condensates containing up to one million atoms. In
combination with an optical dipole trap, the TOP trap acts as a funnel for
efficient loading, after which the quadrupole coils can be retracted, thereby
maximizing optical access. The robustness of this scheme is illustrated by
realizing the superfluid-to-Mott insulator transition in a three-dimensional
optical lattice
