Hybrid fuzzy and sliding-mode control for motorised tether spin-up when coupled with axial vibration
A hybrid fuzzy sliding mode controller is applied to the control of motorised tether spin-up coupled with an axial oscillation phenomenon. A six degree of freedom dynamic model of a motorised momentum exchange tether is used as a basis for interplanetary payload exchange. The tether comprises a symmetrical double payload configuration, with an outrigger counter inertia and massive central facility. It is shown that including axial elasticity permits an enhanced level of performance prediction accuracy and a useful departure from the usual rigid body representations, particularly for accurate payload positioning at strategic points. A special simulation program has been devised in MATLAB and MATHEMATICA for a given initial condition data case
Further analytical study of hybrid rocket combustion
Analytical studies of the transient and steady-state combustion processes in a hybrid rocket system are discussed. The particular system chosen consists of a gaseous oxidizer flowing within a tube of solid fuel, resulting in a heterogeneous combustion. Finite rate chemical kinetics with appropriate reaction mechanisms were incorporated in the model. A temperature dependent Arrhenius type fuel surface regression rate equation was chosen for the current study. The governing mathematical equations employed for the reacting gas phase and for the solid phase are the general, two-dimensional, time-dependent conservation equations in a cylindrical coordinate system. Keeping the simplifying assumptions to a minimum, these basic equations were programmed for numerical computation, using two implicit finite-difference schemes, the Lax-Wendroff scheme for the gas phase, and, the Crank-Nicolson scheme for the solid phase
A synthetic electric force acting on neutral atoms
Electromagnetism is a simple example of a gauge theory where the underlying
potentials -- the vector and scalar potentials -- are defined only up to a
gauge choice. The vector potential generates magnetic fields through its
spatial variation and electric fields through its time-dependence. We
experimentally produce a synthetic gauge field that emerges only at low energy
in a rubidium Bose-Einstein condensate: the neutral atoms behave as charged
particles do in the presence of a homogeneous effective vector potential. We
have generated a synthetic electric field through the time dependence of an
effective vector potential, a physical consequence even though the vector
potential is spatially uniform
Carrier dynamics of terahertz emission based on strained SiGe/Si single quantum well
We report analysis of the carrier distribution during terahertz emission process with carrier–phonon interaction based on p-doped strained SiGe/Si single quantum-well. The results of this analysis show that a considerable number of carriers can penetrate the phonon wall to become “hot” carriers on an approximately picosecond timescale. These hot carriers relax after the removal of the applied voltage, generating a “second” emission in the measurement. This investigation provides an understanding of the carrier dynamics of terahertz emission and has an implication for the design of semiconductor terahertz emitters
Charmful Three-body Baryonic B decays
We study the charmful three-body baryonic B decays with or
in the final state. We explain the measured rates of , , and and
predict the branching fractions of , , , and to be of order ,
respectively. They are readily accessible to the factories.Comment: 21 pages, 5 figures, version to appear in PR
Dynamics of Binary Mixtures with Ions: Dynamic Structure Factor and Mesophase Formation
Dynamic equations are presented for polar binary mixtures containing ions in
the presence of the preferential solvation. In one-phase states, we calculate
the dynamic structure factor of the composition accounting for the ion motions.
Microphase separation can take place for sufficiently large solvation asymmetry
of the cations and the anions. We show two-dimensional simulation results of
the mesophase formation with an antagonistic salt, where the cations are
hydrophilic and the anions are hydrophobic. The structure factor S(q) in the
resultant mesophase has a sharp peak at an intermediate wave number on the
order of the Debye-Huckel wave number. As the quench depth is increased, the
surface tension nearly vanishes in mesophases due to an electric double layer.Comment: 24 pages, 10 figures, to appear in Journal of Physics: Condensed

Perturbation theory of the dynamic inverse spin Hall effect with charge conservation
We present gauge-invariant theory of the dynamic inverse spin Hall effect
driven by the spin--orbit interaction in metallic systems. Charge conservation
is imposed diagrammatically by including vertex corrections. We show the charge
current is induced by an effective electric field that is proportional to the
spin current pumped by the magnetization dynamics. The result is consistent
with recent experiments.Comment: 16pages, 5figure
Kernelization and Parameterized Algorithms for 3-Path Vertex Cover
A 3-path vertex cover in a graph is a vertex subset such that every path
of three vertices contains at least one vertex from . The parameterized
3-path vertex cover problem asks whether a graph has a 3-path vertex cover of
size at most . In this paper, we give a kernel of vertices and an
-time and polynomial-space algorithm for this problem, both new
results improve previous known bounds.Comment: in TAMC 2016, LNCS 9796, 201
Human Galectins Induce Conversion of Dermal Fibroblasts into Myofibroblasts and Production of Extracellular Matrix: Potential Application in Tissue Engineering and Wound Repair
Members of the galectin family of endogenous lectins are potent adhesion/growth-regulatory effectors. Their multi-functionality opens possibilities for their use in bioapplications. We studied whether human galectins induce the conversion of human dermal fibroblasts into myofibroblasts (MFBs) and the production of a bioactive extracellular matrix scaffold is suitable for cell culture. Testing a panel of galectins of all three subgroups, including natural and engineered variants, we detected activity for the proto-type galectin-1 and galectin-7, the chimera-type galectin-3 and the tandem-repeat-type galectin-4. The activity of galectin-1 required the integrity of the carbohydrate recognition domain. It was independent of the presence of TGF-beta 1, but it yielded an additive effect. The resulting MFBs, relevant, for example, for tumor progression, generated a matrix scaffold rich in fibronectin and galectin-1 that supported keratinocyte culture without feeder cells. Of note, keratinocytes cultured on this substratum presented a stem-like cell phenotype with small size and keratin-19 expression. In vivo in rats, galectin-1 had a positive effect on skin wound closure 21 days after surgery. In conclusion, we describe the differential potential of certain human galectins to induce the conversion of dermal fibroblasts into MFBs and the generation of a bioactive cell culture substratum. A Close Binary Star Resolved from Occultation by 87 Sylvia
The star BD+29 1748 was resolved to be a close binary from its occultation by
the asteroid 87 Sylvia on 2006 December 18 UT. Four telescopes were used to
observe this event at two sites separated by some 80 km apart. Two flux drops
were observed at one site, whereas only one flux drop was detected at the
other. From the long-term variation of Sylvia, we inferred the probable shape
of the shadow during the occultation, and this in turn constrains the binary
parameters: the two components of BD+29 1748 have a projected separation of
0.097" to 0.110" on the sky with a position angle 104 deg to 107 deg. The
asteroid was clearly resolved with a size scale ranging from 130 to 290 km, as
projected onto the occultation direction. No occultation was detected for
either of the two known moonlets of 87 Sylvia.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables; submitted to the PAS
