    Scaling near Quantum Chaos Border in Interacting Fermi Systems

    The emergence of quantum chaos for interacting Fermi systems is investigated by numerical calculation of the level spacing distribution P(s)P(s) as function of interaction strength UU and the excitation energy Ï”\epsilon above the Fermi level. As UU increases, P(s)P(s) undergoes a transition from Poissonian (nonchaotic) to Wigner-Dyson (chaotic) statistics and the transition is described by a single scaling parameter given by Z=(Uϔα−u0)Ï”1/2ÎœZ = (U \epsilon^{\alpha}-u_0) \epsilon^{1/2\nu}, where u0u_0 is a constant. While the exponent α\alpha, which determines the global change of the chaos border, is indecisive within a broad range of 0.9∌2.00.9 \sim 2.0, finite value of Îœ\nu, which comes from the increase of the Fock space size with Ï”\epsilon, suggests that the transition becomes sharp as Ï”\epsilon increases.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, to appear in Phys.     Pairing in the quantum Hall system

    We find an analogy between the single skyrmion state in the quantum Hall system and the BCS superconducting state and address that the quantum mechanical origin of the skyrmion is electronic pairing. The skyrmion phase is found to be unstable for magnetic fields above the critical field Bc(T)B_{c}(T) at temperature TT, which is well represented by the relation Bc(T)/Bc(0)≈[1−(T/Tc)3]1/2B_c(T)/B_{c}(0) \approx {[1-(T/T_c)^3]}^{1/2}.Comment: revtex, two figures, to appear in Phys.     Symmetry-breaking skyrmion states in fractional quantum Hall systems

    We calculate in an analyical fashion the energies and net spins of skyrmions in fractional quantum Hall systems, based on the suggestion that skyrmion states are spontaneously LZL_Z and SZS_Z symmetry-breaking states. The quasihole-skyrmion state with a charge −e/3-e/3 around Îœ\nu = 1/3, where the ground state is known as a spin-polarized ferromagnetic state, is found to exist even in high magnetic fields up to about 7 T for GaAs samples.Comment: There is conceptual change.     Satellite radiance data assimilation for binary tropical cyclone cases over the western North Pacific

    A total of three binary tropical cyclone (TC) cases over the Western North Pacific are selected to investigate the effects of satellite radiance data assimilation on analyses and forecasts of binary TCs. Two parallel cycling experiments with a 6 h interval are performed for each binary TC case, and the difference between the two experiments is whether satellite radiance observations are assimilated. Satellite radiance observations are assimilated using the Weather Research and Forecasting Data Assimilation (WRFDA)'s three-dimensional variational (3D-Var) system, which includes the observation operator, quality control procedures, and bias correction algorithm for radiance observations. On average, radiance assimilation results in slight improvements of environmental fields and track forecasts of binary TC cases, but the detailed effects vary with the case. When there is no direct interaction between binary TCs, radiance assimilation leads to better depictions of environmental fields, and finally it results in improved track forecasts. However, positive effects of radiance assimilation on track forecasts can be reduced when there exists a direct interaction between binary TCs and intensities/structures of binary TCs are not represented well. An initialization method (e.g., dynamic initialization) combined with radiance assimilation and/or more advanced DA techniques (e.g., hybrid method) can be considered to overcome these limitations

    Low energy transition in spectral statistics of 2D interactingfermions

    We study the level spacing statistics P(s)P(s) and eigenstate properties of spinless fermions with Coulomb interaction on a two dimensional lattice at constant filling factor and various disorder strength. In the limit of large lattice size, P(s)P(s) undergoes a transition from the Poisson to the Wigner-Dyson distribution at a critical total energy independent of the number of fermions.     A trial for the use of qigong in the treatment of pre and mild essential hypertension: a study protocol for a randomized controlled trial

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Hypertension is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, and the prevalence of hypertension tends to increase with age. Current treatments for hypertension have side effects and poor adherence. Qigong has been studied as an alternative therapy for hypertension; however, the types of qigong used in those studies were diverse, and there have not been many well-designed randomized controlled trials.</p> <p>Our objectives are the following: 1) To evaluate the effects of qigong on blood pressure, health status and hormone levels for pre- or mild hypertension. 2) To test the methodological appropriateness of this clinical trial and calculate a sample size for future randomized trials.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Forty subjects with pre- or mild hypertension will be randomized to either the qigong exercise group or the non-treated group. Participants in the qigong group will conduct qigong exercises 5 times per week for 8 weeks, and participants in the non-treated group will maintain their current lifestyle, including diet and exercise. The use of antihypertensive medication is not permitted. The primary endpoint is a change in patient blood pressure. Secondary endpoints are patient health status (as measured by the SF-36 and the MYMOP2 questionnaires) and changes in hormone levels, including norepinephrine, epinephrine, and cortisol.</p> <p>Discussion</p> <p>This study will be the first randomized trial to investigate the effectiveness of qigong exercises for the treatment of pre- and mild hypertension.     Exendin-4 Improves Steatohepatitis by Increasing Sirt1 Expression in High-Fat Diet-Induced Obese C57BL/6J Mice

    The effects of exendin-4 on Sirt1 expression as a mechanism of reducing fatty liver have not been previously reported. Therefore, we investigated whether the beneficial effects of exendin-4 treatment on fatty liver are mediated via Sirt1 in high-fat (HF) diet-induced obese C57BL/6J mice and related cell culture models. Exendin-4 treatment decreased body weight, serum free fatty acid (FA), and triglyceride levels in HF-induced obese C57BL/6J mice. Histological analysis showed that exendin-4 reversed HF-induced hepatic accumulation of lipids and inflammation. Exendin-4 treatment increased mRNA and protein expression of Sirt1 and its downstream factor, AMPK, in vivo and also induced genes associated with FA oxidation and glucose metabolism. In addition, a significant increase in the hepatic expression of Lkb1 and Nampt mRNA was observed in exendin-4-treated groups. We also observed increased expression of phospho-Foxo1 and GLUT2, which are involved in hepatic glucose metabolism. In HepG2 and Huh7 cells, mRNA and protein expressions of GLP-1R were increased by exendin-4 treatment in a dose-dependent manner. Exendin-4 enhanced protein expression of Sirt1 and phospho-AMPKα in HepG2 cells treated with 0.4 mM palmitic acid. We also found that Sirt1 was an upstream regulator of AMPK in hepatocytes. A novel finding of this study was the observation that expression of GLP-1R is proportional to exendin-4 concentration and exendin-4 could attenuate fatty liver through activation of Sirt1
