Empirical model for quasi direct current interruption with a convoluted arc
This contribution considers various aspects of a quasi direct current, convoluted arc produced by a magnetic field (B-field) connected in parallel with an RLC circuit that have not been considered in combination. These aspects are the arc current limitation due to the arc convolution, changes in arc resistance due to the B-field and material ablation, and the relative significance of the RLC circuit in producing an artificial current zero. As a result, it has been possible to produce an empirical equation for predicting the current interruption capability in terms of the B-field magnitude and RLC components
Discriminating between elderly and young using a fractal dimension analysis of centre of pressure
The aim of this project was to evaluate the use of a new analysis technique, fractal dimension analysis, for quantification of quiet stance centre of pressure (COP). By using a fractal dimension analysis of COP, it might be possible to gain more information about control during quiet stance than traditional analyses have previously allowed. The current project considered a group of young healthy participants and a group of elderly healthy participants to compare traditional measures of COP against a fractal dimension analysis of COP. Results indicated that both types of analyses are able to distinguish between eyes open and eyes closed in the elderly group. However, the fractal dimension analysis more accurately detected differences between the participant groups when standing with their eyes closed. Based on these results it is suggested that fractal dimension analysis is more informative about posture control than traditional measures. It is suggested that a fractal dimension type of analysis can be incorporated into clinical testing to identify patients with pathologies
The effect of storage on the quality properties of Oilseed Rape straw pellets.
With the growing demand for biomass for alternative energy supplies, it would be prudent to investigate alternative sources of energy. The layer study of which this is part will investigate the effect of pre and post pelletization storage on the quality and combustion properties of oilseed rape straw, which, unlike wood pellets, have had little or no detailed research upon the variation of the physical, chemical, biological and combustion properties over the period of storage. This paper focuses on the effect of storage time on oilseed rape straw pellets in terms of pellet quality. The quality of oilseed rape straw pellets was assessed in terms of durability, hardness and particle density. Results show the quality of the pellets is affected by storage time. The durability and particle density of pellets increased between 2 weeks and 3 months storage, before decreasing up to 12 months storage. The hardness of pellets continuously increases during the 12 months storage. It is clear storage time influenced the properties of OSR straw pellets, but it is suspected that there are other factors (e.g. binder, raw material, natural variations) that could be affecting these quality parameters

The effect of varying proportion and chop length of lucerne silage in a maize silage-based total mixed ration on diet digestibility and milk yield in dairy cattle
The objective was to assess the effects of inclusion rate and chop length of lucerne silage, when fed in a total mixed ration (TMR), on milk yield, dry matter (DM) intake (DMI) and digestion in dairy cows. Diets were formulated to contain a 50:50 forage:concentrate ratio (DM basis) and to be isonitrogenous (170 g/kg CP). The forage portion of the offered diets was comprised of maize and lucerne silage in proportions (DM basis) of either 25:75 (HL) or 75:25 (LL). Lucerne was harvested and conserved as silage at either a long (L) or short (S) chop length. These variables were combined in a 2x2 factorial arrangement to give four treatments (HLL, HLS, LLL, LLS) which were fed in a Latin square design study to Holstein dairy cows in two separate experiments. Sixteen and 8 multiparous, mid-lactation, cows were used in experiments 1 and 2, respectively. To ensure sufficient silage for both experiments, different cuts of lucerne silage (taken from the same sward) were used for each experiment: first cut for experiment 1 (which was of poorer quality) and second cut for experiment 2. Dry matter intake, milk yield and milk composition where measured in both experiments, and total tract digestibility and nitrogen (N) balance were assessed using four cows in experiment 2. In experiment 1 cows fed LL had increased DMI (+3.2 kg/day), compared with those fed HL. In contrast, there was no difference in DMI due to lucerne silage inclusion rate in experiment 2. A reduction in milk yield was observed with the HL treatment in both experiment 1 and 2 (-3.0 and -2.9 kg/day, respectively). The HL diet had reduced digestibility of DM and organic matter (OM) (-3 and -4%, respectively), and also reduced the efficiency of intake N conversion into milk N (-4%). The S chop length increased total tract digestibility of DM and OM (both +4%), regardless of inclusion rate. Inclusion of lucerne silage at 25% of forage dry matter increased milk yield relative to 75% inclusion, but a S chop length partially mitigated adverse effects of HL on DMI and milk yield in experiment 1 and on DM digestibility in experiment 2

Application of Sentinel-2A data for pasture biomass monitoring using a physically based radiative transfer model
A large proportion of the global land surface is covered by pasture. The advent of the Sentinel satellites program provides free datasets with good spatiotemporal resolution that can be a valuable source of information for monitoring pasture resources. We combined optical remote sensing data (proximal hyperspectral and Sentinel 2A) with a radiative transfer model (PROSAIL) to estimate leaf area index (LAI), and biomass, in a dairy farming context. Three sites in Southern England were used: two pasture farms that differed in pasture type and management, and a set of small agronomy trial plots with different mixtures of grasses, legumes and herbs, as well as pure perennial ryegrass. The proximal and satellite spectral data were used to retrieve LAI via PROSAIL model inversion, which were compared against field observations of LAI. The potential of bands of Sentinel 2A that corresponded with a 10 m resolution was studied by convolving narrow spectral bands (from a handheld hyperspectral sensor) into Sentinel 2A bands (10 m). Retrieved LAI, using these spectrally resampled S2A data, compared well with measured LAI, for all sites, even for those with mixed species cover (although retrieved LAI was somewhat overestimated for pasture mixtures with high LAI). This proved the suitability of 10 m Sentinel 2A spectral bands for capturing LAI dynamics for different types of pastures. We also found that inclusion of 20 m bands in the inversion scheme did not lead to any further improvement in retrieved LAI. Sentinel 2A image based retrieval yielded good agreement with LAI measurements obtained for a typical perennial ryegrass based pasture farm. LAI retrieved in this way was used to create biomass maps (that correspond to indirect biomass measurements by Rising Plate Meter (RPM)), for mixed-species paddocks for a farm for which limited field data were available. These maps compared moderately well with farmer-collected RPM measurements for this farm. We propose that estimates of paddock-averaged and within-paddock variability of biomass are more reliably obtained from a combined Sentinel 2A-PROSAIL approach, rather than by manual RPM measurements. The physically based radiative transfer model inversion approach outperformed the Normalised Difference Vegetation Index based retrieval method, and does not require site specific calibrations of the inversion scheme
Drivers and barriers of international migration of doctors to and from the United Kingdom: a scoping review.
BACKGROUND: Many high-income countries are heavily dependent on internationally trained doctors to staff their healthcare workforce. Over one-third of doctors practising in the UK received their primary medical qualification abroad. Simultaneously, an average of around 2.1% of doctors leave the UK medical workforce annually to go overseas. The aim of this study was to identify the drivers and barriers of international migration of doctors to and from the UK. METHODS: A scoping review was conducted. We searched EMBASE, MEDLINE, CINAHL, ERIC and BEI in January 2020 (updated October 2021). Grey literature and citation searching were also carried out. Empirical studies reporting on the drivers and barriers to the international migration of doctors to and from the UK published in the English language from 2009 to present were included. The drivers and barriers were coded in NVivo 12 building on an existing framework. RESULTS: 40 studies were included. 62% were quantitative, 18% were qualitative, 15% were mixed-methods and 5% were literature reviews. Migration into and out of the UK is determined by a variety of macro- (global and national factors), meso- (profession led factors) and micro-level (personal factors). Interestingly, many of the key drivers of migration to the UK were also factors driving migration from the UK, including: poor working conditions, employment opportunities, better training and development opportunities, better quality of life, desire for a life change and financial reasons. The barriers included stricter immigration policies, the registration process and short-term job contracts. CONCLUSIONS: Our research contributes to the literature by providing a comprehensive up-to-date review of the drivers and barriers of migration to and from the UK. The decision for a doctor to migrate is multi-layered and is a complex balance between push/pull at macro-/meso-/micro-levels. To sustain the UK's supply of overseas doctors, it is vital that migration policies take account of the drivers of migration particularly working conditions and active recruitment while addressing any potential barriers. Immigration policies to address the impact of Brexit and the COVID-19 pandemic on the migration of doctors to and from the UK will be particularly important in the immediate future. Taking the Easy Way Out: How the GED Testing Program Induces Students to Drop Out
The option to obtain a General Education Development (GED) certificate changes the incentives facing high school students. This paper evaluates the effect of three different GED policy innovations on high school graduation rates. A six point decrease in the GED pass rate due to an increase in national passing standards produced a 1.3 point decline in overall high school dropout rates. The introduction of a GED certification program in high schools in Oregon produced a four percent decrease in high school graduation rates. Introduction of GED certificates for civilians in California increased the high school dropout rate by 3 points. The GED program induces students to drop out of high school.

Short communication: a survey of grass-clover ley management and creation of a near infra-red reflectance spectroscopy equation to predict clover concentration
The purpose of the present study was, firstly, to examine current practice for the agronomy of grass-clover mixed swards used for silage-making in the UK, and secondly, to develop and validate a Near Infra-Red Reflectance Spectroscopy (NIRS) equation capable of predicting clover concentration (CC) in undried and unmilled grass-clover silage samples. A calibration set of 94 grass-clover (white, trifolium repens, and red, trifolium pratense) mixture silage samples were sourced from UK farms and an accompanying questionnaire was used to obtain information on the sward agronomy used to produce each sample. Questionnaire data highlighted that (i) reducing the use of fertiliser inputs (ii) increasing uptake of new varieties, and (iii) increasing the farmer’s ability to measure botanical composition as potential strategies for improving the utilisation of clover in grass swards. Botanical composition was measured by hand separation for each sample and a new NIRS equation was created and assessed using blind validation with an independent set of 30 grass-clover samples. The relative standard error of cross validation (SECV, as a percentage of the measured mean) of the optimised equation produced was 36.8%, and, in an independent validation test, the ratio of standard error of prediction to the standard deviation of the reference data set (RPD) was 1.56. The equation could be improved by increasing accuracy at high CCs but showed promise as a simple tool to assist growers in sward management decisions
