    Cardio-respiratory indices of endurance capacity in soccer players

    The purpose of this investigation was to study the relationship between selected pulmonary measurements, anthropometric indices, distance run in sixteen minutes and cardiovascular fitness potential (as measured by maximum oxygen uptake), maximum oxygen debt and certain factors closely associated with these measurements. The study involved eighty-seven male subjects who ranged between twenty and twenty-five years of age. In the 1973 study the sample involved thirty-seven participants from the sports of rugby, hockey, cross country, and soccer. In the 1974 study the sample involved thirty-nine soccer players. In 1975 physiological measurements were taken from eleven soccer players and applied to several of the 1974 regression formulae in order to predict the distance the players could run in sixteen minutes.     Graft immaturity and safety concerns in transplanted human kidney organoids

    For chronic kidney disease, regeneration of lost nephrons with human kidney organoids derived from induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells is proposed to be an attractive potential therapeutic option. It remains unclear, however, whether organoids transplanted into kidneys in vivo would be safe or functional. Here, we purified kidney organoids and transplanted them beneath the kidney capsules of immunodeficient mice to test their safety and maturity. Kidney organoid grafts survived for months after transplantation and became vascularized from host mouse endothelial cells. Nephron-like structures in grafts appeared more mature than kidney organoids in vitro, but remained immature compared with the neighboring mouse kidney tissue. Ultrastructural analysis revealed filtration barrier-like structures, capillary lumens, and tubules with brush border in the transplanted kidney organoids, which were more mature than those of the kidney organoids in vitro but not as organized as adult mammalian kidneys. Immaturity was a common feature of three separate differentiation protocols by immunofluorescence analysis and single cell RNA sequencing. Stroma of transplanted kidney organoid grafts were filled with vimentin-positive mesenchymal cells, and chondrogenesis, cystogenesis, and stromal expansion were observed in the long term. Transcription profiles showed that long-term maintenance after kidney organoid transplantation induced transcriptomic reprogramming with prominent suppression of cell-cycle-related genes and upregulation of extracellular matrix organization. Our data suggest that kidney organoids derived from iPS cells may be transplantable but strategies to improve nephron differentiation and purity are required before they can be applied in humans as a therapeutic option.11Ysciescopuskc

    Self-help groups challenge health care systems in the US and UK

    Purpose: This research considers how self-help groups (SHGs) and self- help organizations (SHOs) contribute to consumerist trends in two different societies: United States and United Kingdom. How do the health care systems and the voluntary sectors affect the kinds of social changes that SHGs/SHOs make? Methodology/approach: A review of research on the role of SHGs/SHOs in contributing to national health social movements in the UK and US was made. Case studies of the UK and the US compare the characteristics of their health care systems and their voluntary sector. Research reviews of two community level self-help groups in each country describe the kinds of social changes they made. Findings: The research review verified that SHGs/SHOs contribute to national level health social movements for patient consumerism. The case studies showed that community level SHGs/SHOs successfully made the same social changes but on a smaller scale as the national movements, and the health care system affects the kinds of community changes made. Research limitations: A limited number of SHGs/SHOs within only two societies were studied. Additional SHGs/SHOs within a variety of societies need to be studied. Originality/value of chapter Community SHGs/SHOs are often trivialized by social scientists as just inward-oriented support groups, but this chapter shows that local groups contribute to patient consumerism and social changes but in ways that depend on the kind of health care system and societal context

    Intoxicação por monofluoroacetato em animais

    O monofluoroacetato (MF) ou ácido monofluoroacético é utilizado na Austrália e Nova Zelândia no controle populacional de mamíferos nativos ou exóticos. O uso desse composto é proibido no Brasil, devido ao risco de intoxicação de seres humanos e de animais, uma vez que a substância permanece estável por décadas. No Brasil casos recentes de intoxicação criminosa ou acidental têm sido registrados. MF foi identificado em diversas plantas tóxicas, cuja ingestão determina "morte súbita"; de bovinos na África do Sul, Austrália e no Brasil. O modo de ação dessa substância baseia-se na formação do fluorocitrato, seu metabólito ativo, que bloqueia competitivamente a aconitase e o ciclo de Krebs, o que reduz produção de ATP. As espécies animais têm sido classificadas nas quatro Categorias em função do efeito provocado por MF: (I) no coração, (II) no sistema nervoso central (III) sobre o coração e sistema nervoso central ou (IV) com sintomatologia atípica. Neste trabalho, apresenta-se uma revisão crítica atualizada sobre essa substância. O diagnóstico da intoxicação por MF é realizado pelo histórico de ingestão do tóxico, pelos achados clínicos e confirmado por exame toxicológico. Uma forma peculiar de degeneração hidrópico-vacuolar das células epiteliais dos túbulos uriníferos contorcidos distais tem sido considerada como característica dessa intoxicação em algumas espécies. O tratamento da intoxicação por MF é um desafio, pois ainda não se conhece um agente capaz de reverte-la de maneira eficaz; o desfecho geralmente é fata

    Reliability of characterising buildings as HVAC or NV for making assumptions and estimations in case studies

    Buildings are often categorised into HVAC-buildings and naturally ventilated (NV) buildings. This study explores the extent to which a fully air-conditioned museum adheres to the typology of being an HVAC-building regarding (i) the acceptable indoor temperature range and variation, (ii) the clothing variation, (iii) the validity of the PMV model. Estimations of these aspects and of the PMV model's inputs are based on data from the literature that differentiates between HVAC and NV buildings. Then, the estimated aspects are compared with experimental data based on a large-scale measurement and survey study (n=1250) at the Hermitage Amsterdam museum. Conclusions: (i) More seasonal temperature variation is accepted in the museum than expected for an HVAC-building; (ii) The permissible temperature range exactly matches that of HVAC-buildings, i.e. neutral ±1.2°C; (iii) Clothing behaviour in the museum corresponds to NV-buildings; (iv) Metabolic rate was found to be 22% higher than estimated; (vi) PMV model increasingly underestimates mean thermal sensation towards cold and warm sides of thermal spectrum; (vii) Outdoor temperature significantly influences thermal sensation indoors. Hence, categorising a building solely based on the criteria of perceived control into HVAC-building or NV-building yields unreliable estimations of clothing behaviour, acceptable temperature range, and validity of the PMV-model

    Fundamental Investigations Of Airframe Noise

    An extensive numerical and experimental study of airframe noise mechanisms associated with a subsonic high-lift system has been performed at NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC). Investigations involving both steady and unsteady computations and experiments on a small-scale, part-span flap model are presented. Both surface (steady and unsteady pressure measurements, hot films, oil flows, pressure sensitive paint) and offsurface (5 hole-probe, particle-imaged velocimetry, laser velocimetry, laser light sheet measurements) were taken in the LaRC Quiet Flow Facility (QFF) and several hard-wall tunnels up to flight Reynolds number. Successful microphone array measurements were also taken providing both acoustic source maps on the model, and quantitative spectra. Critical directivity measurements were obtained in the QFF. NASA Langley unstructured and structured ReynoldsAveraged Navier-Stokes codes modeled the flap geometries excellent comparisons with surface and offsurface experimental dat..
