    Modulated voltage metastable ionization detector

    The output current from a metastable ionization detector (MID) is applied to a modulation voltage circuit. An adjustment is made to balance out the background current, and an output current, above background, is applied to an input of a strip chart recorder. For low level concentrations, i.e., low detected output current, the ionization potential will be at a maximum and the metastable ionization detector will operate at its most sensitive level. When the detected current from the metastable ionization detector increases above a predetermined threshold level, a voltage control circuit is activated which turns on a high voltage transistor which acts to reduce the ionization potential. The ionization potential applied to the metastable ionization detector is then varied so as to maintain the detected signal level constant. The variation in ionization potential is now related to the concentration of the constituent and a representative amplitude is applied to another input of said strip chart recorder

    A new comparison between solid-state thermionics and thermoelectrics

    It is shown that equations for electrical current in solid-state thermionic and thermoelectric devices converge for devices with a width equal to the mean free path of electrons, yielding a common expression for intensive electronic efficiency in the two types of devices. This result is used to demonstrate that the materials parameters for thermionic and thermoelectric devices are equal, rather than differing by a multiplicative factor as previously thought

    VLT and GTC observations of SDSS J0123+00: a type 2 quasar triggered in a galaxy encounter?

    We present long-slit spectroscopy, continuum and [OIII]5007 imaging data obtained with the Very Large Telescope and the Gran Telescopio Canarias of the type 2 quasar SDSS J0123+00 at z=0.399. The quasar lies in a complex, gas-rich environment. It appears to be physically connected by a tidal bridge to another galaxy at a projected distance of ~100 kpc, which suggests this is an interacting system. Ionized gas is detected to a distance of at least ~133 kpc from the nucleus. The nebula has a total extension of ~180 kpc. This is one of the largest ionized nebulae ever detected associated with an active galaxy. Based on the environmental properties, we propose that the origin of the nebula is tidal debris from a galactic encounter, which could as well be the triggering mechanism of the nuclear activity. SDSS J0123+00 demonstrates that giant, luminous ionized nebulae can exist associated with type 2 quasars of low radio luminosities, contrary to expectations based on type 1 quasar studies.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures.     Photographic Study of Combustion in a Rocket Engine I : Variation in Combustion of Liquid Oxygen and Gasoline with Seven Methods of Propellant Injection

    Motion pictures at camera speeds up to 3000 frames per second were taken of the combustion of liquid oxygen and gasoline in a 100-pound-thrust rocket engine. The engine consisted of thin contour and injection plates clamped between two clear plastic sheets forming a two-dimensional engine with a view of the entire combustion chamber and nozzle. A photographic investigation was made of the effect of seven methods of propellant injection on the uniformity of combustion. From the photographs, it was found that the flame front extended almost to the faces of the injectors with most of the injection methods, all the injection systems resulted in a considerable nonuniformity of combustion, and luminosity rapidly decreased in the divergent part of the nozzle. Pressure vibration records indicated combustion vibrations that approximately corresponded to the resonant frequencies of the length and the thickness of the chamber. The combustion temperature divided by the molecular weight of the combustion gases as determined from the combustion photographs was about 50 to 70 percent of the theoretical value

    VIMOS-VLT spectroscopy of the giant Ly-alpha nebulae associated with three z~2.5 radio galaxies

    The morphological and spectroscopic properties of the giant (>60 kpc) Ly-alpha nebulae associated with three radio galaxies at z~2.5 (MRC 1558-003, MRC 2025-218 and MRC 0140-257) have been investigated using integral field spectroscopic data obtained with VIMOS on VLT. The morphologies are varied. The nebula of one source has a centrally peaked, rounded appearance. In the other two objects, it consists of two spatial components. The three nebulae are aligned with the radio axis within <30 deg. The total Ly-alpha luminosities are in the range (0.3-3.4) x 1e44 erg s-1. The Ly-alpha spectral profile shows strong variation through the nebulae, with FWHM values in the range ~400-1500 km s-1 and velocity shifts V~120-600 km s-1. We present an infall model which can explain successfully most Ly-alpha morphological and spectroscopic properties of the nebula associated with MRC 1558-003. This adds further support to our previous conclusion that the _quiescent_ giant nebulae associated with this and other high redshift powerful radio galaxies are in infall. A problem for this model is the difficulty to reproduce the large Ly-alpha FWHM values. We have discovered a giant (~85 kpc) Ly-alpha nebula associated with the radio galaxy MRC 0140-257 at z=2.64. It shows strikingly relaxed kinematics (FWHM2) radio galaxies.Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRA

    Automatic indexing by discipline and high-level categories: Methodology and potential applications.

    This paper first describes the methodology of journal descriptor (JD) ndexing, based on human indexing at the journal level using only 127 descriptors, and applying statistical methods that associate this journal indexing with text words in a training set of MEDLINE® citations. These associations form the basis for automatic indexing of documents outside the training set. The paper then presents the new technique of semantic type (ST) indexing, based on JD indexing associated with each of 134 ST's, and applying the standard cosine coefficient measure to compare the similarity between the JD indexing of a document and the JD indexing of each ST. The ST indexing of the document is the list of ST's ranked in decreasing order of similarity between the JD indexing of the document and the JD indexing of the ST's. Discussion of the potential usefulness and application of the very general indexing provided by JD's and ST's comprises the remainder of the paper. JD's have been used for more than thirty years to search MEDLINE by discipline, and discipline-based indexing is in evidence on the Web. It is suggested, with several examples, that ST's may convey a unique slant of a document's content not normally represented in standard indexing vocabularies. Use of ST indexing to rank retrieved output is mentioned as a possible application. Notwithstanding the importance of methodology and performance issues, the intent of this paper is to explore questions of the potential utility and applicability of JD and ST indexing

    The Glassy Wormlike Chain

    We introduce a new model for the dynamics of a wormlike chain in an environment that gives rise to a rough free energy landscape, which we baptise the glassy wormlike chain. It is obtained from the common wormlike chain by an exponential stretching of the relaxation spectrum of its long-wavelength eigenmodes, controlled by a single stretching parameter. Predictions for pertinent observables such as the dynamic structure factor and the microrheological susceptibility exhibit the characteristics of soft glassy rheology and compare favourably with experimental data for reconstituted cytoskeletal networks and live cells. We speculate about the possible microscopic origin of the stretching, implications for the nonlinear rheology, and the potential physiological significance of our results.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures.     Systematic variation of central mass density slope in early-type galaxies

    We study the total density distribution in the central regions (<1<\, 1 effective radius, ReR_{\rm e}) of early-type galaxies (ETGs), using data from the SPIDER survey. We model each galaxy with two components (dark matter halo + stars), exploring different assumptions for the dark matter (DM) halo profile, and leaving stellar mass-to-light (M/LM_{\rm \star}/L) ratios as free fitting parameters to the data. For a Navarro et al. (1996) profile, the slope of the total mass profile is non-universal. For the most massive and largest ETGs, the profile is isothermal in the central regions (Re/2\sim R_{\rm e}/2), while for the low-mass and smallest systems, the profile is steeper than isothermal, with slopes similar to those for a constant-M/L profile. For a concentration-mass relation steeper than that expected from simulations, the correlation of density slope with mass tends to flatten.     Testing Lorentz and CPT symmetry with hydrogen masers

    We present details from a recent test of Lorentz and CPT symmetry using hydrogen masers. We have placed a new limit on Lorentz and CPT violation of the proton in terms of a recent standard model extension by placing a bound on sidereal variation of the F = 1 Zeeman frequency in hydrogen. Here, the theoretical standard model extension is reviewed. The operating principles of the maser and the double resonance technique used to measure the Zeeman frequency are discussed. The characterization of systematic effects is described, and the method of data analysis is presented. We compare our result to other recent experiments, and discuss potential steps to improve our measurement.Comment: 26 pages, 16 figure
