    Nodal-link semimetals

    In topological semimetals, the valence band and conduction band meet at zero-dimensional nodal points or one-dimensional nodal rings, which are protected by band topology and symmetries. In this Rapid Communication, we introduce "nodal-link semimetals", which host linked nodal rings in the Brillouin zone. We put forward a general recipe based on the Hopf map for constructing models of nodal-link semimetal. Lack of an efficient system for targeted mutagenesis in obligates remains a major impediment in understanding microbial pathogenesis. Challenges in creating targeted mutations may be attributed to essential nature of majority of the genes and intracellular replication dependence. Despite success in generating random mutations, a method that works well in creating mutations in specific genes of interest followed by complementation remains problematic for obligates and is a highly sought-after goal. We describe protocols to generate stable targeted mutations by allelic exchange in Ehrlichia chaffeensis, an obligate intracellular tick-borne bacterium responsible for human monocytic ehrlichiosis. Targeted mutations in E. chaffeensis were created to disrupt two genes, and also to restore one gene by another allelic exchange mutation leading to the restoration of transcription and protein expression from the inactivated gene and the recovered organisms also express mCherry, which distinguishes from the wild type. We expect that the methods developed are broadly applicable to other obligates, particularly to rickettsial pathogens, to routinely perform targeted mutations to enable studies focused on protein structure-function analyses, host-pathogen interactions and in developing vaccines

    Control of Hopf Bifurcation and Chaos in a Delayed Lotka-Volterra Predator-Prey System with Time-Delayed Feedbacks

    A delayed Lotka-Volterra predator-prey system with time delayed feedback is studied by using the theory of functional differential equation and Hassard’s method. By choosing appropriate control parameter, we investigate the existence of Hopf bifurcation. An explicit algorithm is given to determine the directions and stabilities of the bifurcating periodic solutions. We find that these control laws can be applied to control Hopf bifurcation and chaotic attractor. Finally, some numerical simulations are given to illustrate the effectiveness of the results found

    Fulminant psittacosis complicated with multiple organ dysfunction syndrome: a case report

    The cases of fulminant psittacosis complicated with multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) have been rarely reported in China. In this article, clinical manifestations and treatment of a patient with fulminant psittacosis complicated with MODS were summarized and analyzed. The 80-year-old male patient developed respiratory failure in Emergency Department and received mechanical ventilation, which rapidly progressed into acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) complicated with MODS. Metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) using bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) samples confirmed the pathogen of Chlamydia psittaci. Then, moxifloxacin, doxycycline and omadacycline were given, which yielded favorable efficacy and prognosis. The diagnosis and treatment of this patient suggests that fulminant psittacosis can be manifested with respiratory failure, severe pneumonia with rapid progression and MODS. Imaging manifestations consist of pneumonia, bronchial inflation sign and pleural effusion. mNGS can be performed to identify the rare pathogens during early stage and confirm the diagnosis. Tetracyclines, macrolides and quinolones can be delivered as antibacterial drugs

    Hidden attractors in fundamental problems and engineering models

    Recently a concept of self-excited and hidden attractors was suggested: an attractor is called a self-excited attractor if its basin of attraction overlaps with neighborhood of an equilibrium, otherwise it is called a hidden attractor. For example, hidden attractors are attractors in systems with no equilibria or with only one stable equilibrium (a special case of multistability and coexistence of attractors). While coexisting self-excited attractors can be found using the standard computational procedure, there is no standard way of predicting the existence or coexistence of hidden attractors in a system. In this plenary survey lecture the concept of self-excited and hidden attractors is discussed, and various corresponding examples of self-excited and hidden attractors are considered

    Fibroblast Growth Factor 1 Promotes Rat Stem Leydig Cell Development

    Fibroblast growth factor 1 (FGF1) is reported to be expressed in the testis. How FGF1 affects stem Leydig cell development remains unclear. Here, we report the effects of FGF1 on rat stem Leydig cell development in an ethane dimethane sulfonate (EDS)-treated model. FGF1 (100 ng/testis) significantly increased serum testosterone level, increased PCNA-positive Leydig cell percentage and Leydig cell number, but down-regulated the expression of Lhcgr, Star, Cyp11a1, Hsd3b1, Cyp17a1, and Hsd11b1 in Leydig cells per se, after its daily intratesticular injection from post-EDS day 14 for 14 days. Primary culture of the seminiferous tubules showed that FGF1 stimulated EdU incorporation to stem Leydig cells but blocked the differentiation into the Leydig cell lineage, possibly via FGFR1-mediated mechanism. In conclusion, FGF1 promotes stem Leydig cell proliferation but blocks its differentiation
