Non-consensus opinion model on directed networks
Dynamic social opinion models have been widely studied on undirected
networks, and most of them are based on spin interaction models that produce a
consensus. In reality, however, many networks such as Twitter and the World
Wide Web are directed and are composed of both unidirectional and bidirectional
links. Moreover, from choosing a coffee brand to deciding who to vote for in an
election, two or more competing opinions often coexist. In response to this
ubiquity of directed networks and the coexistence of two or more opinions in
decision-making situations, we study a non-consensus opinion model introduced
by Shao et al. \cite{shao2009dynamic} on directed networks. We define
directionality as the percentage of unidirectional links in a network,
and we use the linear correlation coefficient between the indegree and
outdegree of a node to quantify the relation between the indegree and
outdegree. We introduce two degree-preserving rewiring approaches which allow
us to construct directed networks that can have a broad range of possible
combinations of directionality and linear correlation coefficient
and to study how and impact opinion competitions. We find that, as
the directionality or the indegree and outdegree correlation
increases, the majority opinion becomes more dominant and the minority
opinion's ability to survive is lowered
Microscopic insights to spin transport–driven ultrafast magnetization dynamics in a Gd/Fe bilayer
Laser-induced spin transport is a key ingredient in ultrafast spin dynamics. However, it remains debated to what extent ultrafast magnetization dynamics generates spin currents and vice versa. We use time- and spin-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to study an antiferromagnetically coupled Gd/Fe bilayer, a prototype system for all-optical switching. Spin transport leads to an ultrafast drop of the spin polarization at the Gd surface, demonstrating angular-momentum transfer over several nanometers. Thereby, Fe acts as spin filter, absorbing spin majority but reflecting spin minority electrons. Spin transport from Gd to Fe was corroborated by an ultrafast increase of the Fe spin polarization in a reversed Fe/Gd bilayer. In contrast, for a pure Gd film, spin transport into the tungsten substrate can be neglected, as spin polarization stays constant. Our results suggest that ultrafast spin transport drives the magnetization dynamics in Gd/Fe and reveal microscopic insights into ultrafast spin dynamics

Maternal Blood Pressure Rise During Pregnancy and Offspring Obesity Risk at 4 to 7 Years Old: The Jiaxing Birth Cohort.
CONTEXT: Maternal hypertensive disorders during pregnancy are suggested to affect obesity risk in offspring. However, little is known about the prospective association of rise in maternal blood pressure within normal range during pregnancy with this risk for obesity. OBJECTIVE: To clarify the associations of diastolic and systolic blood pressure during pregnancy among normotensive women with the risk for obesity in offspring. DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. SETTING: Southeast China. PARTICIPANTS: Up to 2013, a total of 88,406 mother-child pairs with anthropometric measurements of offspring age 4 to 7 years were included in the present analysis. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Overweight/obesity risk in offspring. RESULTS: Among normotensive women, second- and third-trimester diastolic and systolic blood pressures were positively associated with risk for overweight/obesity in offspring: odds ratios per 10-mm Hg higher second- and third-trimester diastolic blood pressure were 1.05 [95% confidence interval (CI), 1.01 to 1.09] and 1.05 (95% CI, 1.02 to 1.10), respectively, and for systolic blood pressure were 1.08 (95% CI, 1.05 to 1.11) and 1.06 (95% CI, 1.03 to 1.09). Each 10-mm Hg greater rise in blood pressure between first and third trimesters was associated with a higher risk for offspring overweight/obesity: diastolic, 1.06 (95% CI, 1.01 to 1.10); systolic, 1.05 (95% CI, 1.02 to 1.07). Among all women (combining normotensive and hypertensive women), maternal hypertension in the second and third trimesters was associated with 49% and 14% higher risks for overweight/obesity in offspring, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that rise in maternal blood pressure during pregnancy and hypertension during pregnancy, independent of maternal body size before pregnancy, are risk factors for offspring childhood obesity
The Influence of Expectancy Level and Personal Characteristics on Placebo Effects: Psychological Underpinnings
Placebo effects benefit a wide range of clinical practice, which can be profoundly influenced by expectancy level and personal characteristics. However, research on the issue of whether these factors independently or interdependently affect the placebo effects is still in its infancy. Here, we adopted a 3-day between-subject placebo analgesia paradigm (2-day conditioning and 1-day test) to investigate the influence of expectancy levels (i.e., No, Low, and High) and personal characteristics (i.e., gender, dispositional optimism, and anxiety state) on placebo effects in 120 healthy participants (60 females). Our results showed that the reduction of pain intensity in the test phase was influenced by the interaction between expectancy and gender, as mainly reflected by greater reductions of pain intensity in females at Low expectancy level than females at No/High expectancy levels, and greater reductions of pain intensity in males than in females at High expectancy level. Additionally, the reduction of pain unpleasantness was not only modulated by the interaction between expectancy and gender, but also by the interaction between expectancy and dispositional optimism, as well as the interaction between expectancy and anxiety state. Specifically, participants who were more optimistic in Low expectancy group, or those who were less anxious in High expectancy group showed greater reductions of pain unpleasantness. To sum up, we emphasized on regulating the expectancy level individually based on the assessment of personal characteristics to maximize placebo effects in clinical conditions
Interface-engineered paclitaxel-based hollow mesoporous organosilica nanoplatforms for photothermal-enhanced chemotherapy of tumor
Having benefited from the combination of different therapeutic modalities, functionalized nanoplatforms with synergistic strategies have aroused great interest in anticancer treatment. Herein, an engineered, a biodegradable hollow mesoporous organosilica nanoparticle (HMON)-based nanoplatform was fabricated for photothermal-enhanced chemotherapy of tumor. For the first time, we demonstrated that HMONs could serve as nanocarriers for co-delivering of both the paclitaxel and photothermal agent new indocyanine green (IR820), denoted as Paclitaxel/IR820@ HMONs-PEG. The as-prepared nanosystem exhibited a high paclitaxel-loading capacity of 28.4%, much higher than most paclitaxel-loaded nanoformulations. Furthermore, incorporating thioether bonds (S-S) into the HMONs’ framework endowed them with GSH-responsive biodegradation behavior, leading to the controllable release of drugs under a tumor reducing microenvironment, and hindered the premature release of paclitaxel. Upon being irradiated with an NIR laser, the obtained co-delivery nanosystem exhibited great photothermal properties generated from IR820. The fabricated nanocomposites could significantly suppress tumor growth under NIR laser irradiation, as validated by in vitro and in vivo assessments. Combined with outstanding biocompatibility, the constructed nanosystem holds great potential in combinational antitumor therapy
High sodium intake and fluid overhydration predict cardiac structural and functional impairments in chronic kidney disease
BackgroundHigh sodium intake and fluid overhydration are common factors of and strongly associated with adverse outcomes in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. Yet, their effects on cardiac dysfunction remain unclear.AimsThe study aimed to explore the impact of salt and volume overload on cardiac alterations in non-dialysis CKD.MethodsIn all, 409 patients with CKD stages 1–4 (G1–G4) were enrolled. Daily salt intake (DSI) was estimated by 24-h urinary sodium excretion. Volume status was evaluated by the ratio of extracellular water (ECW) to total body water (TBW) measured by body composition monitor. Recruited patients were categorized into four groups according to DSI (6 g/day) and median ECW/TBW (0.439). Echocardiographic and body composition parameters and clinical indicators were compared. Associations between echocardiographic findings and basic characteristics were performed by Spearman’s correlations. Univariate and multivariate binary logistic regression analysis were used to determine the associations between DSI and ECW/TBW in the study groups and the incidence of left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) and elevated left ventricular filling pressure (ELVFP). In addition, the subgroup effects of DSI and ECW/TBW on cardiac abnormalities were estimated using Cox regression.ResultsOf the enrolled patients with CKD, the median urinary protein was 0.94 (0.28–3.14) g/d and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was 92.05 (IQR: 64.52–110.99) mL/min/1.73 m2. The distributions of CKD stages G1–G4 in the four groups was significantly different (p = 0.020). Furthermore, compared to group 1 (low DSI and low ECW/TBW), group 4 (high DSI and high ECW/TBW) showed a 2.396-fold (95%CI: 1.171–4.902; p = 0.017) excess risk of LVH and/or ELVFP incidence after adjusting for important CKD and cardiovascular disease risk factors. Moreover, combined with eGFR, DSI and ECW/TBW could identify patients with higher cardiac dysfunction risk estimates with an AUC of 0.704 (sensitivity: 75.2%, specificity: 61.0%). The specificity increased to 85.7% in those with nephrotic proteinuria (AUC = 0.713). The magnitude of these associations was consistent across subgroups analyses.ConclusionThe combination of high DSI (>6 g/d) and high ECW/TBW (>0.439) independently predicted a greater risk of LVH or ELVFP incidence in non-dialysis CKD patients. Moreover, the inclusion of eGFR and proteinuria improved the risk stratification ability of DSI and ECW/TBW in cardiac impairments in CKD
