Breaking the rules. Ir and Business
The emergence of advanced information retrieval technologies has caused a drastic change in business
models, in the nature of information intermediaries and in its automated processing. The characteristics
of these changes and their economic consequences are analyzed
Childrenās information retrieval: beyond examining search strategies and interfaces
The study of childrenās information retrieval is still for the greater part untouched territory. Meanwhile, children can become lost in the digital information world, because they are confronted with search interfaces, both designed by and for adults. Most current research on childrenās information retrieval focuses on examining childrenās search performance on existing search interfaces to determine what kind of interfaces are suitable for childrenās search behaviour. However, to discover the true nature of childrenās search behaviour, we state that research has to go beyond examining search strategies used with existing search interfaces by examining childrenās cognitive processes during information-seeking. A paradigm of childrenās information retrieval should provide an overview of all the components beyond search interfaces and search strategies that are part of childrenās information retrieval process. Better understanding of the nature of childrenās search behaviour can help adults design interfaces and information retrieval systems that both support childrenās natural search strategies and help them find their way in the digital information world
Children searching information on the Internet: Performance on children's interfaces compared to Google
Children frequently make use of the Internet to search for information. However, research shows that children experience many problems with searching and browsing the web. The last decade numerous search environments have been developed, especially for children. Do these search interfaces support children in effective information-seeking? And do these interfaces add value to todayās popular search engines, such as Google? In this explorative study, we compared childrenās search performance on four interfaces designed for children, with their performance on Google. We found that the children did not perform better on these interfaces than on Google. This study also uncovered several problems that children experienced with these search interfaces, which can be of use for designers of future search interfaces for children
Managing a portal of digital web resources by content syndication
As users become more accustomed to continuous Internet access, they will have less patience with the offering of disparate resources. A new generation of portals is being designed that aids users in navigating resource space and in processing the data they retrieved. Such portals offer added value by means of content syndication: the effort to have multiple, federated? resources co-operate in order to profit optimally from their synergy. A portal that offers these advantages, however, can only be of lasting value if it is sustainable. We sketch a way to set up and run an organisation that can manage a content syndication portal in a sustainable way.\ud

Evaluating Relevance Feedback: An Image Retrieval Interface for Children
Studies on information retrieval for children are not yet\ud
common. As young children possess a limited vocabulary\ud
and limited intellectual power, they may experience more\ud
difficulty in fulfilling their information need than adults.\ud
This paper presents an image retrieval user interface that\ud
is specifically designed for children. The interface uses relevance feedback and has been evaluated by letting children\ud
perform different search tasks. The tasks were performed\ud
using two interfaces; a more traditional interface - acting as a control interface - and the relevance feedback interface. \ud
One of the remarkable results of this study is that children\ud
did not favor relevance feedback controls over traditional\ud
navigational controls
Measuring children's search behaviour on a large scale
Children often experience problems during information-seeking using traditional search interfaces and search technologies, that are designed for adults. This is because children engage with the world in fundamentally different ways than adults. To design search technologies that support children in effective and enjoyable information-seeking, more research is needed to examine childrenās specific skills and needs concerning information-seeking. Therefore, we developed an application that can monitor childrenās search behaviour on a large scale. In this paper, we present the steps taken to develop this application. The basis of the application is UsaProxy, an existing system that is used to monitor the userās usage of websites. We have increased the accuracy of UsaProxy and have developed an application that is able to extract useful information from UsaProxyās log files
