    Topological sound

Recently, we witnessed a tremendous effort to conquer the realm of acoustics as a possible playground to test with topologically protected sound wave propagation. In this article, we review the latest efforts to explore with sound waves topological states of quantum matter in two- and three-dimensional systems where we discuss how spin and valley degrees of freedom appear as highly novel ingredients to tailor the flow of sound in the form of one-way edge modes and defect-immune protected acoustic waves. Both from a theoretical stand point and based on contemporary experimental verifications, we summarize the latest advancements of the flourishing research frontier on topological sound.X.J.Z. and L.M.H. are supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (Grant No. 11625418 and No. 51732006). AML1-ETO interacts with Sp1 and antagonizes Sp1 transactivity through RUNT domain

AbstractAML1-ETO fusion protein is observed in approximately 12% of acute myeloid leukemia. In the present research, we found that AML1-ETO is able to inhibit Sp1 transactivity. We also found that this inhibition of Sp1 transactivity by AML1-ETO is achieved by interaction between Sp1 and RUNT domain of AML1. AML1b is able to abrogate the inhibition of AML1-ETO. Since Sp1 is involved in hematopoietic cell differentiation, we proposed that AML1-ETO promotes leukemogenesis by blocking cell differentiation through inhibition of Sp1 transactivity.Structured summaryMINT-6549474: AML1-ETO (genbank_protein_gi:AAB34820) physically interacts (MI:0218) with Sp1 (uniprotkb:P08047) by anti bait coimmunoprecipitation (MI:0006)MINT-6549439: Sp1 (uniprotkb:P08047) physically interacts (MI:0218) with AML1-ETO (uniprotkb:AAB34820) by anti tag coimmunoprecipitation (MI:0007)MINT-6549458: Sp1 (uniprotkb:P08047) physically interacts (MI:0218) with AML1a (uniprotkb:Q01196-2) by anti tag coimmunoprecipitation (MI:0007

Severe nausea and vomiting in pregnancy: psychiatric and cognitive problems and brain structure in children

Background: Two studies have suggested that severe prolonged nausea and vomiting during pregnancy is associated with emotional and behavioral problems in offspring, with smaller sample size and short-term follow-up. Moreover, little information is available on the role of the brain structure in the associations. Methods: In a US-based cohort, the association was investigated between severe prolonged nausea and vomiting in pregnancy (extending after the second trimester and termed SNVP), psychiatric and cognitive problems, and brain morphology, from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study, from 10,710 children aged 9–11 years. We validated the emotional including psychiatric findings using the Danish National Cohort Study with 2,092,897 participants. Results: SNVP was significantly associated with emotional and psychiatric problems (t = 8.89, Cohen’s d = 0.172, p = 6.9 × 10−19) and reduced global cognitive performance (t = − 4.34, d = − 0.085, p = 1.4 × 10−5) in children. SNVP was associated with low cortical area and volume, especially in the cingulate cortex, precuneus, and superior medial prefrontal cortex. These lower cortical areas and volumes significantly mediated the relation between SNVP and the psychiatric and cognitive problems in children. In the Danish National Cohort, severe nausea and vomiting in pregnancy were significantly associated with increased risks of behavioral and emotional disorders in children (hazard ratio, 1.24; 95% confidence interval, 1.16–1.33). Conclusions: SNVP is strongly associated with psychiatric and cognitive problems in children, with mediation by brain structure. These associations highlight the clinical importance and potential benefits of the treatment of SNVP, which could reduce the risk of psychiatric disorder in the next generation

Relationship between occupational stress and job burnout among rural-to-urban migrant workers in Dongguan, China: a cross-sectional study

Objectives: In China, there have been an increasing number of migrant workers from rural to urban areas, and migrant workers have the highest incidence of occupational diseases. However, few studies have examined the impact of occupational stress on job burnout in these migrant workers. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between occupational stress and job burnout among migrant workers. Design: This study used a cross-sectional survey. Setting: This investigation was conducted in Dongguan city, Guangdong Province, China. Participants: 3806 migrant workers, aged 18–60 years, were randomly selected using multistage sampling procedures. Primary and secondary outcome measures: Multistage sampling procedures were used to examine demographic characteristics, behaviour customs and jobrelated data. Hierarchical linear regression and logistic regression models were constructed to explore the relationship between occupational stress and burnout. Results: Demographics, behaviour customs and jobrelated characteristics significantly affected on burnout. After adjusting for the control variable, a high level of emotional exhaustion was associated with high role overload, high role insufficiency, high role boundary, high physical environment, high psychological strain, high physical strain, low role ambiguity, low responsibility and low vocational strain. A high level of depersonalisation was associated with high role overload, high role ambiguity, high role boundary, high interpersonal strain, high recreation, low physical environment and low social support. A low level of personal accomplishment was associated with high role boundary, high role insufficiency, low responsibility, low social support, low physical environment, low self-care and low interpersonal strain. Compared to the personal resources, the job strain and personal strain were more likely to explain the burnout of rural-to-urban migrant workers in our study. Conclusions: The migrant workers have increased job burnouts in relation to occupational stress. Relieving occupational stress and maintaining an appropriate quantity and quality of work could be important measures for preventing job burnout among these workers

Cadmium-induced genomic instability in Arabidopsis: molecular toxicological biomarkers for early diagnosis of cadmium stress

Microsatellite instability (MSI) analysis, random-amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD), and methylation-sensitive arbitrarily primed PCR (MSAP-PCR) are methods to evaluate the toxicity of environmental pollutants in stress-treated plants and human cancer cells. Here, we evaluate these techniques to screen for genetic and epigenetic alterations of Arabidopsis plantlets exposed to 0–5.0 mg L−1 cadmium (Cd) for 15 d. There was a substantial increase in RAPD polymorphism of 24.5, and in genomic methylation polymorphism of 30.5–34.5 at CpG and of 14.5–20 at CHG sites under Cd stress of 5.0 mg L−1 by RAPD and of 0.25–5.0 mg L−1 by MSAP-PCR, respectively. However, only a tiny increase of 1.5 loci by RAPD occurred under Cd stress of 4.0 mg L−1, and an additional high dose (8.0 mg L−1) resulted in one repeat by MSI analysis. MSAP-PCR detected the most significant epigenetic modifications in plantlets exposed to Cd stress, and the patterns of hypermethylation and polymorphisms were consistent with inverted U-shaped dose responses. The presence of genomic methylation polymorphism in Cd-treated seedlings, prior to the onset of RAPD polymorphism, MSI and obvious growth effects, suggests that these altered DNA methylation loci are the most sensitive biomarkers for early diagnosis and risk assessment of genotoxic effects of Cd pollution in ecotoxicology
