    En esta edición se intenta documentar en orden cronológico de incorporación laboral, la actividad de aquellos preparadores que desarrollaron tareas en el Taller de Taxidermia, el que, a partir de la década de los 30 del pasado siglo, pasó a depender de la División Zoología Vertebrados; se incluyen la imágenes de algunas de las piezas por ellos realizadas y la documentación disponible. Probablemente habrá omisiones y desde luego existen huecos que no pudimos completar, debido a que nos basamos en documentación incompleta y relatos de integrantes de la División Zoología Vertebrados, algunos que ya cesaron en sus funciones, sin la posibilidad de recurrir a más fuentes. Es nuestra intención plasmar una parte importante de la historia de nuestra institución, de la que se desconoce la dedicación y paciencia necesarias por parte de los involucrados para efectuar una tarea casi artística, para que al fin los ejemplares puedan exhibirse o pasar a formar parte de las colecciones científicas, además de la posterior conservación y tratamiento especial que requieren

    Este documento está dedicado al recuerdo de Fernando de Buen, a quién podríamos considerar como uno de los primeros “ictiólogos iberoamericanos”. En este caso nos encontramos con un profesional que, por la locura de una guerra fratricida, tuvo que dejar su patria y trasladarse al continente americano, residiendo inicialmente en México dónde adopta su ciudadanía. Posteriormente viaja a Sudamérica para trabajar en Uruguay y luego en Chile. En esa extensa travesía generó parte de su legado, dejando aportes substanciales para el crecimiento y consolidación de la ictiología neotropical. Por ello, a más de cincuenta años de su desaparición, junto a la invalorable colaboración de los colegas de Chile, España, México y Uruguay, concretamos este modesto archivo con la idea de que su figura y su obra no se pierdan en la “bruma de los tiempos” y que las jóvenes generaciones conozcan a quiénes abrieron los surcos de nuestra disciplina aún, como en este caso, llevando consigo el dolor y la angustia del destierro

    The "Alberto Cadena García" Mammal Collection of the Institute of Natural Sciences, National University of Colombia (ICN) has contributed to the knowledge of mammals in Colombia since 1959. With approximately 27,600 specimens for the year 2020, it includes all orders of mammals reported for Colombia and records of all departments. This collection has specimens of about 80% of the mammalian species of Colombia. This collection contains sample material for 21 taxa and their specimen information is available online. In addition to its teaching activities, it has other collections that include prints, tissues and photographic records, which have continuous growth from field trips to teaching, graduate work, thesis, research projects and the deposit of material from entities external. The specimens in the collection have contributed to more than 90 scientific publications in the last 10 years, more than 150 theses and graduate work by students of the National University of Colombia.La Colección de Mamíferos “Alberto Cadena García” del Instituto de Ciencias Naturales, Universidad Nacional de Colombia (ICN) ha aportado al conocimiento de los mamíferos en Colombia desde 1959.     Oxidative stress, lipid metabolism, and neurotransmission in freshwater snail (Pomacea patula) exposed to a water-accommodated fraction of crude oil

    Background. Crude oil is a super mixture of chemical compounds and is commonly found in aquatic environments. The tegogolo (Pomacea patula Baker, 1922) is a Mexican freshwater snail endemic to Lake Catemaco in Veracruz; currently, however, its distribution has expanded to many freshwater ecosystems that suffer the impact of crude oil spills and oil byproducts like fuels. Goals. To assess a series of biomarkers involved in oxidative stress, neurotransmission, and fatty acid metabolism in tegogolos exposed to the water-accommodated fraction (WAF) of Maya crude oil (MCO). Methods. Tegogolo specimens were exposed to WAF of MCO obtained from loads of 0.1, 1, 10 and 100 mg/L. We evaluated ROS ( O2 -* and H2O2), oxidative stress (TBARS and RC=O), enzymes involved in antioxidant defense (SOD, CAT, and GPx), some enzymes involved in neurotransmission (AChE, GDA, and CbE activities), and biomarkers of fatty acids metabolism (fatty acids levels and AOX activity). Results. Clear biomarkers responses were observed only in some tissues. ROS were clearly higher than controls in the foot, head, and kidney; however, others biomarkers of oxidative stress remain statistically unchanged. SOD response was irregular with respect to controls and treatments. In contrast, CAT (foot) and GPx (foot and intestine) were the more active enzymes and their activities were higher than in controls. The responses of some enzymes involved in neurotransmission suggest that compensation mechanisms exist between AChE and GDA in the foot and head. Fatty acids metabolism increased with exposure to WAF; however, these types of biomarkers seem unsuitable for monitoring the toxic effects produced by WAF at low environmental concentrations. Conclusions. We can conclude that under the exposure conditions discussed herein, the tegogolos showed acclimation to WAF of Maya crude oil by complex mechanisms.Background.     Identification of non-tuberculous mycobacteria isolated from opossum (Didelphis virginiana) lymph nodes and characterisation of lesions

    The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of NTM in the lymph nodes of opossums (D. virginiana) and to characterise the microscopic changes in affected tissue. Retropharyngeal and tracheobronchial lymph nodes were collected postmortem from 18 opossums in the state of Colima, Mexico in 2013. The lymph nodes were also cultured for mycobacterial organisms and processed for histopathological examination. Bacteriological cultures yielded 5/18X100 (28%) isolates of NTM, which were subsequently identified as M. terrae, M. szulgai, M. gastri and M. asiaticum. Microscopic examination of the affected nodes revealed a necrotic granulomatous lymphadenitis (3/60%) composed of histiocytes, epithelioid cells and giant cells with intralesional alcoholresistant acid bacteria. An association between the sex of the opossum and the presence of NTM was observed. To our knowledge, this is the first report of NTM isolation in opossums with granulomatous lymphadenitis in Mexico

    Multiple independent L-gulonolactone oxidase (GULO) gene losses and vitamin C synthesis reacquisition events in non-Deuterostomian animal species

    Background: L-ascorbate (Vitamin C) is an important antioxidant and co-factor in eukaryotic cells, and in mammals it is indispensable for brain development and cognitive function. Vertebrates usually become L-ascorbate auxothrophs when the last enzyme of the synthetic pathway, an L-gulonolactone oxidase (GULO), is lost. Since Protostomes were until recently thought not to have a GULO gene, they were considered to be auxothrophs for Vitamin C. Results: By performing phylogenetic analyses with tens of non-Bilateria and Protostomian genomes, it is shown, that a GULO gene is present in the non-Bilateria Placozoa, Myxozoa (here reported for the first time) and Anthozoa groups, and in Protostomians, in the Araneae family, the Gastropoda class, the Acari subclass (here reported for the first time), and the Priapulida, Annelida (here reported for the first time) and Brachiopoda phyla lineages. GULO is an old gene that predates the separation of Animals and Fungi, although it could be much older. We also show that within Protostomes, GULO has been lost multiple times in large taxonomic groups, namely the Pancrustacea, Nematoda, Platyhelminthes and Bivalvia groups, a pattern similar to that reported for Vertebrate species. Nevertheless, we show that Drosophila melanogaster seems to be capable of synthesizing L-ascorbate, likely through an alternative pathway, as recently reported for Caenorhabditis elegans. Conclusions: Non-Bilaterian and Protostomians seem to be able to synthesize Vitamin C either through the conventional animal pathway or an alternative pathway, but in this animal group, not being able to synthesize L-ascorbate seems to be the exception rather than the ruleXunta de Galicia | Ref.     Growth, blood metabolites and hormones in calves fed diets with different amounts of energy and protein during the pre- or post-weaning periods

    We investigated the effects of diets differing in energy and protein concentrations given during pre- and post-weaning on hormone and metabolite levels in association to parameters of growth. Sixteen Aberdeen Angus calves four-day-old were allocated in individual pens during 105 days in a randomized complete design. Animals consumed ad libitum various diets differing in proportion of energy and protein (A: 80% of concentrate, 20% alfalfa hay; B: 60% concentrate, 40% of alfalfa hay; C: 40% concentrate, 60% alfalfa hay, and D: 20% concentrate, 80% alfalfa hay). Also, calves consumed milk substitute up to 60-day-old day. Serum growth hormone and cortisol levels were not altered with diet changes (P > 0.05) neither during the pre- nor the post-weaning periods. Plasma insulin concentration average daily intake, glucose and thyroid hormone levels, and concentrations of ammonia nitrogen and propionic acid were greater (P < 0.01) for diets having higher than lower energy and protein levels during the post-weaning but not during the pre-weaning period.     Ensilaje de cogollo de caña quemado y ensilaje de maíz en la ceba de novillos

    Se ensiló cogollo de caña quemado, usando como aditivos melazas al 3% y úrea al 1% en base fresca. Los tratamientos consistieron en una combinación de ensilaje de cogollo quemado y ensilaje de maíz como dieta básica a voluntad y dos suplementos que contenían 1.5 kg de gallinaza, 1.0 kg de melaza y/o 0.1 kg de úrea para el tratamiento uno y 0.4 kg de torta de soya para el tratamiento dos, con nueve novillos cebú mestizos por tratamiento. Las ganancias de peso diario fueron de 0.52 y 0.54 kg; y los consumos de materia seca por animal de 11.37 y 11.01 kg/día para los tratamientos uno y dos respectivamente. La factibilidad del uso del cogollo de caña depende de la eficiencia de los procesos de ensilado y de la suplementación adecuada y de bajo costo.Were used burned sugar cane tops silage with 3 % of molasses and 1% of urea on fresch base and com silage as basic diet. The treatments were as follow: Treatment 1 (t1) - Burned sugar cane tops silage + Com Silage + 1.5 kg of poultry litter + 1.0 kg of molasse + 0.1 kg of urea and 0.4 kg of soybean meal by urea for treatment 2 (T2), with nine crossbreed steers for treatment. The average daily gains were 0.52 and 0.54 and 0.54 kg/day and the total consumption per animal were 11.37 and 11.01 kg/day for TI and T2 respectively.
