    The Search for Beauty-fully Bound Tetraquarks Using Lattice Non-Relativistic QCD

    Motivated by multiple phenomenological considerations, we perform the first search for the existence of a bˉbˉbb\bar{b}\bar{b}bb tetraquark bound state with a mass below the lowest non-interacting bottomonium-pair threshold using the first-principles lattice non-relativistic QCD methodology. We use a full SS-wave colour/spin basis for the bˉbˉbb\bar{b}\bar{b}bb operators in the three 0++0^{++}, 1+−1^{+-} and 2++2^{++} channels. We employ four gluon field ensembles at multiple lattice spacing values ranging from a=0.06−0.12a = 0.06 - 0.12 fm, all of which include uu, dd, ss and cc quarks in the sea, and one ensemble which has physical light-quark masses. Additionally, we perform novel exploratory work with the objective of highlighting any signal of a near threshold tetraquark, if it existed, by adding an auxiliary potential into the QCD interactions. With our results we find no evidence of a QCD bound tetraquark below the lowest non-interacting thresholds in the channels studied.Comment: 24 Pages; 19 Figures; Accepted By PRD; Unaveraged Correlator Data Publicly Available in SQLite Databas

    New methods for B meson decay constants and form factors from lattice NRQCD

    We determine the normalisation of scalar and pseudoscalar current operators made from non-relativistic bb quarks and Highly Improved Staggered light quarks in lattice Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) through O(αs)\mathcal{O}(\alpha_s) and ΛQCD/mb\Lambda_{\text{QCD}}/m_b. We use matrix elements of these operators to extract BB meson decay constants and form factors, then compare to those obtained using the standard vector and axial-vector operators. This provides a test of systematic errors in the lattice QCD determination of the BB meson decay constants and form factors. We provide a new value for the BB and BsB_s meson decay constants from lattice QCD calculations on ensembles that include uu, dd, ss and cc quarks in the sea and those which have the u/du/d quark mass going down to its physical value. Our results are fB=0.196(6)f_B=0.196(6) GeV, fBs=0.236(7)f_{B_s}=0.236(7) GeV and fBs/fB=1.207(7)f_{B_s}/f_B =1.207(7), agreeing well with earlier results using the temporal axial current. By combining with these previous results, we provide updated values of fB=0.190(4)f_B=0.190(4) GeV, fBs=0.229(5)f_{B_s}=0.229(5) GeV and fBs/fB=1.206(5)f_{B_s}/f_B = 1.206(5).Comment: 14 pages, 10 figure

    Why I chose to become a teacher and why I might choose not to become one: a survey of student teachers’ perceptions of teaching as a career

    A detailed questionnaire about why they chose teaching as a career and the challenges that they face on their ITT course was completed by 189 third year student teachers on a third year BA in Primary Education with QTS programme at a university in Wales. The findings showed that several factors contributed to their choosing a career as primary school teachers, including reasons related to perceived teaching ability, altruistic reasons, intrinsic reasons, and extrinsic reasons. The data also revealed that the main stressors faced by the respondents were linked to four factors, namely: high levels of accountability; the pressure of monitoring; the continual demand for change; and the perceived lack of respect given to the profession. Differences were found between the male and the female respondents in the ways they perceived their role within the profession. The findings have important implications for all those who are concerned with the attracting and retaining the most competent teachers to/in our primary schools

    Feminists really do count : the complexity of feminist methodologies

    We are delighted to be presenting this special issue on the topic of feminism and quantitative methods. We believe that such an issue is exceptionally timely. This is not simply because of ongoing debates around quantification within the field of feminism and women‟s studies. It is also because of debates within the wider research community about the development of appropriate methodologies that take account of new technological and philosophical concerns and are fit-for-purpose for researching contemporary social, philosophical, cultural and global issues. Two areas serve as exemplars in this respect and both speak to these combined wider social science and specifically feminist methodological concerns. The first is the increasing concern amongst social scientists with how the complexity of social life can be captured and analysed. Within feminism, this can be seen in debates about intersectionality that recognise the concerns arising from multiple social positions/divisions and associated power issues. As Denis (2008: 688) comments in respect of intersectional analysis „The challenge of integrating multiple, concurrent, yet often contradictory social locations into analyses of power relations has been issued. Theorising to accomplish this end is evolving, and we are struggling to develop effective methodological tools in order to marry theorising with necessary complex analyses of empirical data.‟ Secondly, new techniques and new data sources are now coming on line. This includes work in the UK of the ESRC National Data Strategy which has been setting out the priorities for the development of research data resources both within and across the boundaries of the social sciences. This will facilitate historical, longitudinal, interdisciplinary and mixed methodological research. And it may be the case that these developments facilitate the achievement of a longstanding feminist aim not simply for interdisciplinarity but for transdisciplinarity in epistemological and methodological terms
