Online “Maker” Modules to Support Production Pedagogies in Education

    Get PDF
Our research study examines the use of online maker modules (developed by our research team) on the learning process for, and professional development of, graduate M.Ed. and M.A. students in a faculty of education in Ontario, Canada. The research draws on the practice of critical making with both digital and real-world artefacts as a vehicle for collaborative knowledge- sharing and generation, deep learning and meaningful engagement with one’s local and global communities. The students engaged in all five online maker modules as part of a graduate-level course and this paper offers insight into the experiences of two of these students -- how the modules impacted their learning process, professional development and their willingness to adopt an inquiry and/or production (maker) pedagogy in their own teaching and learning environments

Creating an External Funding Strategy: How to Thrive

    Get PDF
Seeking external funding for Extension programs is an important investment in our future. Integral assets to Extension agents as they seek external funding are: understanding the relevance of their programming to the community, ensuring their reliability to conduct successful programming, and having the ability to communicate impact to stakeholders. An external funding strategy allows agents to speak their needs in the language of funders. Through this article, agents can examine strategic questions and logical reasoning and the theory behind them to refine an external funding proposal plan. The packaging checklist will ensure that each proposal is compiled for success

Patterned probes for high precision 4D-STEM bragg measurements.

Nanoscale strain mapping by four-dimensional scanning transmission electron microscopy (4D-STEM) relies on determining the precise locations of Bragg-scattered electrons in a sequence of diffraction patterns, a task which is complicated by dynamical scattering, inelastic scattering, and shot noise. These features hinder accurate automated computational detection and position measurement of the diffracted disks, limiting the precision of measurements of local deformation. Here, we investigate the use of patterned probes to improve the precision of strain mapping. We imprint a "bullseye" pattern onto the probe, by using a binary mask in the probe-forming aperture, to improve the robustness of the peak finding algorithm to intensity modulations inside the diffracted disks. We show that this imprinting leads to substantially improved strain-mapping precision at the expense of a slight decrease in spatial resolution. In experiments on an unstrained silicon reference sample, we observe an improvement in strain measurement precision from 2.7% of the reciprocal lattice vectors with standard probes to 0.3% using bullseye probes for a thin sample, and an improvement from 4.7% to 0.8% for a thick sample. We also use multislice simulations to explore how sample thickness and electron dose limit the attainable accuracy and precision for 4D-STEM strain measurements

Someday my Prince Will Come: How are gender roles enabled and constrained in Disney Music, during Classic Disney, the Disney Renaissance, and Modern Disney?

    Get PDF
The purpose of this project is to study how Disney has promoted gender roles through its music over three different Disney eras: Classic, Renaissance, and Modern Disney. While Disney movies have been criticized in the past for having characters with unattainable bodies and unrealistic views on love and life, the role that Disney music plays in promoting gender roles has not been as thoroughly researched or as widely criticized. With the immensity that children learn and are surrounded by Disney music, it is imperative that the message that the children take in is a healthy one. Through the analysis of lyrics from ten different Disney musical feature films, this study examines the degree to which Disney music reflects gender norms, across time

Evaluation of University of Pittsburgh Pitt Public Health Website

Problem: In 2011 the Pitt Public Health Dean’s office decided to redesign the school’s website and has taken this opportunity to gauge how well the current website was reaching various audiences and what could be done in the future to better serve those who use website. Method: An evaluation of the website was conducted with the purpose of determining the needs of the audiences who use the website, determine the usage of the website and to explore potential ways to make the website more effective. Website analytics and qualitative research methodology was employed including five structured interviews with members of the website committee and seven focus groups with primary audiences of the website. Focus groups audiences included current students, alumni, faculty, and staff. A theme analysis was used for the focus groups using qualitative research methods. Results: There were a total of 43 participants (seven students, 13 alumni, seven faculty, and 16 staff members). Four major themes were found in the focus groups. The first theme is that is difficult to find information on the website, particularly contact information. The second theme is that website usage is low because it is difficult to find information or that the website is not updated enough with new information. The third theme was that there needs to be better communication between the school and its internal and external audiences. The final theme is that all focus groups thought that social media and mobile technology were extremely important. Conclusions: Recommendations for the website include continuity between the school site and the department sites so that users can find the same information across different areas of the site. The webpages should not have paragraphs of information but lists or short descriptions so users can quickly find what they need without having to read paragraphs. A reliable search bar should be added so that it only searches for information on the site, so that users can quickly find what they are looking for. There should be an easy to use directory that users can find contact information and calendar that has important event information listed for the school and departments. The school should also encourage better outreach to their audiences and provide resources to accomplish this goal. The school should also have a Facebook page and Twitter feed and keep it updated so that users will be engaged. Public Health Significance: Pitt Public Health conducts world class research and trains the next generation of public health practitioners and researchers. Any organization or institution that conducts business on the internet the website has become the most important place where transactions are carried out and this holds true for universities. In order to attract the best students, faculty and staff to the school, like any business, needs to develop a website that matches the schools high standards and ideals because it is where consumers first come into contact with the school
