Sound insulation design of modular construction housing
This paper provides an insight into the acoustic issues of modular housing using the Verbus System of construction. The paper briefly summarises the history of the development of Verbus modular housing and the acoustic design considerations of the process. Results are presented from two sound insulation tests conducted during the course of the project. The results are discussed in terms of compliance with Approved Document E1 and increased performance standards such as EcoHomes2
The redshift distribution of submillimetre galaxies at different wavelengths
Using simulations we demonstrate that some of the published redshift
distributions of submillimetre galaxies (SMGs) at different wavelengths, which
were previously reported to be statistically different, are consistent with a
parent distribution of the same population of galaxies. The redshift
distributions which peak at z_med=2.9, 2.6, 2.2, 2.2, and 2.0 for galaxies
selected at 2 and 1.1 mm, and 870, 850, and 450 um respectively, can be derived
from a single parent redshift distribution, in contrast with previous studies.
The differences can be explained through wavelength selection, depth of the
surveys, and to a lesser degree, angular resolution. The main differences are
attributed to the temperature of the spectral energy distributions, as
shorter-wavelength maps select a hotter population of galaxies. Using the same
parent distribution and taking into account lensing bias we can also reproduce
the redshift distribution of 1.4 mm-selected ultra-bright galaxies, which peaks
at z_med=3.4. However, the redshift distribution of 450 um-selected galaxies in
the deepest surveys, which peaks at z_med=1.4, cannot be reproduced from the
same parent population with just these selection effects. In order to explain
this distribution we have to add another population of galaxies or include

Opthalmic impairment at 7 years of age in children born very preterm
Aims: To determine the prevalence of ophthalmic impairments in very preterm compared with term infants, the relation between impairments and cerebral ultrasound appearances and retinopathy, and the correlation with visual perception and motor and cognitive measures. Subjects: 279 children at 7 years of age born before 32 weeks gestation within Liverpool during 1991–92 and attending mainstream schools, and 210 term controls. Methods: Visual acuity was assessed by Snellen chart, and strabismus by the cover test. Stereopsis was determined using the TNO random dot test, and contrast sensitivity using the Cambridge low contrast gratings. Visual and motor abilities were assessed using the Developmental test of motor integration (VMI) and the Movement ABC. Intelligence was measured with the Wechsler intelligence scale for children UK. Perinatal cranial ultrasound and retinopathy data were extracted from clinical records. Results: Children born preterm were significantly more likely to wear glasses, to have poor visual acuity,
reduced stereopsis, and strabismus than term controls, but they showed no significant decrease in contrast sensitivity. Ophthalmic impairments were significantly related to poorer scores on the VMI, Movement ABC, and Wechsler IQ tests, but were not significantly related to neonatal cranial ultrasound appearances. Stage 3 retinopathy was related to poorer subsequent acuity. Conclusions: Children born very preterm and without major neurodevelopmental sequelae have an increased prevalence of ophthalmic impairments at primary school age which are associated with visual perceptional, motor, and cognitive defects. The cause may be a generalised abnormality of cortical development rather than perinatally acquired focal lesions of the brain
Photometric Metallicities in Bootes I
We present new Stromgren and Washington data sets for the Bootes I dwarf
galaxy, and combine them with the available SDSS photometry. The goal of this
project is to refine a ground-based, practical, accurate method to determine
age and metallicity for individual stars in Bootes I that can be selected in an
unbiased imaging survey, without having to take spectra. We produce photometric
metallicities from Stromgren and Washington photometry, for stellar systems
with a range of . To avoid the decrease in sensitivity of the
Stromgren metallicity index on the lower red-giant branch, we replace the
Stromgren v-filter with the broader Washington C-filter; we find that
is the most successful filter combination, for individual stars with
, to maintain ~0.2 dex -resolution over the whole
red-giant branch. We demonstrate that we can break the isochrones'
age-metallicity degeneracy with these filters, using stars with log g=2.5-3.0,
which have less than a 2% change in their -colour due to age, over a

Construction management contracts: law and practice
The context of construction management (CM) reveals that this method of procurement is as much a management philosophy as a contract structure. It is important to consider legal and contractual issues in this context. The interplay between management and law is complex and often misunderstood. Before considering specific issues, the use of contractual remedies in business agreements is discussed. In addition, the extent to which standardising a form of contract detracts or contributes to the success of projects is also considered. The dearth of judicial decisions, and the lack of a standard form, render it difficult to be specific about legal issues. Therefore, the main discussion of legal issues is centred around a recently completed research project which involved eliciting the views of a cross-section of experienced construction management clients, consultants and trade contractors. These interviews are used as the basis for highlighting some of the most important legal points to consider when setting up CM projects. The interviews revealed that the advantage of CM is the proximity of the client to the trade contractors and the disadvantage is that it depends on a high degree of professionalism and experience; qualities which are unfortunately difficult to find in the UK construction industry
Three decades of hydrological modelling research in South Africa
This paper presents a review of the research undertaken in the field of hydrological modelling over roughly the last three decades, concentrating primarily on South African work in an international context. The focus is on deterministic, rainfall-runoff models and addresses issues related to model design as well as to the application of models in practice. I provide a brief description of what hydrological models are and what they are used for and discuss also the following issues: • Developments in understanding hydrological process and the extent to which these have filtered down into models. • Model calibration and parameter estimation. • Trends in data availability and how these have affected model development. • Trends in computer technology and their impacts on model development. I suggest that there have been substantial developments in the science and practice of hydrological modelling, but that there remain many problems that need to be addressed to improve the ability of models to contribute to the solution of problems of water resource management. Southern African scientists have contributed to the body of knowledge on hydrological modelling, despite the limited resources available compared to resources elsewhere. Internationally, the focus has not always been on the practical issues of model application and has commonly tended towards the more theoretical and mathematical issues of model calibration. This is not a trend that has found much favour in southern Africa (particularly amongst research funding agencies), where there are many problems of water resource management that have the potential to be resolved with existing models, applied in an appropriate way. The paper concludes by suggesting that further research needs to focus on the integration of the best in international developments with the tried and tested models that have been developed locally. The context of this research should be the search for more reliable estimations of water resource availability
Comparison of satellite rainfall data with observations from gauging station networks
Networks of ground-based hydro-meteorological observations are frequently sparse in developing countries and the situation is not improving. Part of the reason is the lack of resources available in countries which have more pressing economic and social issues. However, these are also the very countries where improved estimates of water resource availability are required. While hydrological models have the potential to provide the necessary information, without adequately accurate climate (rainfall, evaporation, etc.) input information, it is extremely difficult to establish models and generate representative water resource availability information. This paper reports on a preliminary analysis of the potential for using satellite derived rainfall data through a comparison with available gauge data for four basins in the southern Africa region. It is clear that the satellite data cannot be used directly in conjunction with historical gauge data. Specifically, the satellite data do not reflect the strong influences on precipitation of topography in some of the basins. However, the prospects of applying relatively straightforward adjustments are promising and further assessments appear to be justified
