TERMINAL MARKET WINDOWS FOR MISSISSIPPI SMALL-FARM VEGETABLE PRODUCERS
This study investigated various marketing strategies involving market windows at wholesale fruit and vegetable terminal markets. Data used in the analysis included weekly prices for okra, sweet corn, strawberries, and green cabbage at terminal markets located in Dallas, St. Louis, Atlanta, Chicago, Cincinnati, and Detroit. Strawberries showed relatively high profit margins for small farmers operating in southwest Mississippi. Sweet corn and okra showed more narrow profit margins, while green cabbage appeared to yield negative net returns (generally) for these farmers. Furthermore, stochastic dominance analysis of various combinations of crop/market/window revealed the following as the preferred marketing strategies: (1) strawberries in all markets in the last third of the calendar year; (2) sweet corn in all six markets in the first third of the calendar year; and (3) okra in St. Louis and Cincinnati in the first third of the calendar year.Agribusiness,
Meeting the Needs of the Workforce in a Shifting Regional Economy
The tri-state region (New York/New Jersey/Connecticut) supports a highly complex and diverse labor market that has been subject not only to the shocking events of September 11th, 2001, but also to broad demographic and economic trends that have shaped the structure of work and the makeup of the available workforce. This paper examines the shifts that occurred in the regional economy throughout the past decade and discusses the possible implications of these changes for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, educational institutions, and state and local governments
Low-Cost QCM Sensor System for Screening Semen Samples
Artificial insemination is a well-established part of modern agricultural practice. A viable semen sample is judged by the total number of spermatozoa (sperm) in the sample and the motility of the sperm. In this paper, we report the development of a reusable measurement cell and electronics for screening semen samples based on the Quartz Crystal Microbalance (QCM) and Universal Frequency to Digital Converter (UFDC-1) to produce a low-cost sensor system. After introducing the semen sample at one end of the measurement cell, sperm swim down a channel before causing a frequency change on the QCM. Data is presented that shows the different frequency changes using a commercial frequency counter caused by porcine semen samples, one two days old and one twenty one days old. Similar data is presented for a motile semen sample measurement using the low-cost UFDC-1
