DEMAND SYSTEM CHOICE BASED ON TESTING THE ENGEL CURVE SPECIFICATION

It is common to use a demand systems approach in estimating the key parameters from household consumption data. In conducting these studies the researcher is faced with selecting a functional form. In turn, each functional form implies a particular shape for the Engel curves. This analysis highlights the importance of testing the shape of Engel curves, especially if the researcher is interested in elasticity estimates well away from the sample mean. “Beautiful Chaos”: Clinicians’ Learning Experience in Collaborative Theater Programming

This study provides insights into speech-language pathology graduate student learning experiences during a community-based clinical rotation that targets skill development within an interdisciplinary theater program. Theater-based programming has shown some utility toward promoting pragmatic language skill development for children and teens outside of traditional clinical practice. In addition, the interdisciplinary nature of the program provides opportunities for student clinicians to engage in interprofessional collaboration with arts professionals. The purpose of this study was to explore SLP graduate students’ experiences within a collaborative inclusion theater program. Semi-structured interviews collected from three graduate student clinicians were transcribed and analyzed according to Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) methods to yield insights from student participant perspectives of this assigned clinical rotation. Analysis of interview data suggests participants found opportunities to problem-solve collaborative roles and balances while forming concrete ideas related to how to a therapeutic effect. The most salient concepts present across student accounts of experience included openness to the ongoing nature of the learning process, appreciation for the collaborative teaming involved in program activities, and the establishment of a set of ideas and tools to use for clinical utility. This study provides helpful information for clinical educators considering the benefit of embedding potential interprofessional collaborations with performing arts professionals in clinical education

A Comparative Study of Two Pediatric Wheelchairs Based on Therapists\u27 Feedback

Summary Receiving feedback from therapists and seating specialists is an important part of evaluating and providing quantitative data to wheelchair manufacturers servicing less-resourced settings. Introduction There is currently a pressing need for research to enable proper donations of wheelchairs to less resourced settings1. To appropriately serve a population of persons with disabilities in a given location, it is important to understand the specific needs of that population2. People living in less resourced settings have a different lifestyle than those residing in more developed countries, and different functionality and design of wheelchairs is needed3. The goal of our study is to compare two pediatric wheelchairs designed for less-resourced settings using questionnaire feedback from clinicians and seating specialists. Methods After working with each wheelchair a least one hour and being involved with fitting a child to that chair, seating specialists, technicians and therapists will complete a visual analogue scale questionnaire with questions on the following: design and manufacturing of 11 structural regions of the wheelchair and 7 additional questions on the likelihood of the wheelchair’s performance in various categories. Preliminary Results Preliminary data indicate the design and manufacturing of the Hope Haven wheelchair is rated higher than the APDK chair in eight regions of the chair and one performance aspect. Conclusion Our sample group of subjects is very small at this point. Additional data collection is planned in conjunction with a trip to Kenya to complete a long term field study of the two chairs. A parallel study with feedback on energy cost of rolling and Follow-up on wheelchair donations and their functionality is an essential part of helping persons with disabilities in less-resourced settings as well as manufacturers

Modeling Bioterrorism in the Livestock Sectors of NAFTA Members

Until two years ago, most citizens of Canada, the United States and Mexico experienced terrorism as a distant reality viewed from the safety of their living rooms. Today, North Americans encounter constant reminders of the aggravation and economic costs imposed on them by the now real threat of terrorism. The United States, the most obvious target for new terrorist activity, has responded by tightening its border security with all countries including its NAFTA partners.(2) Canada and Mexico joined the NAFTA to obtain preferred and more secure access to the United States market. The increased threat of terrorist activity in North America raises three crucial questions for NAFTA members. First, how real is a bioterrorism threat? Second, how can the United States maintain access to its market for its NAFTA partners and at the same time meet its legitimate security concerns? Third, what are the potential economic effects of a bioterrorism attack on North America? Genome-Wide Association Study Identifies High-Impact Susceptibility Loci for HCC in North America

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Despite the substantial impact of environmental factors, individuals with a family history of liver cancer have an increased risk for HCC. However, genetic factors have not been studied systematically by genome-wide approaches in large numbers of individuals from European descent populations (EDP). APPROACH AND RESULTS: We conducted a 2-stage genome-wide association study (GWAS) on HCC not affected by HBV infections. A total of 1872 HCC cases and 2907 controls were included in the discovery stage, and 1200 HCC cases and 1832 controls in the validation. We analyzed the discovery and validation samples separately and then conducted a meta-analysis. All analyses were conducted in the presence and absence of HCV. The liability-scale heritability was 24.4% for overall HCC. Five regions with significant ORs (95% CI) were identified for nonviral HCC: 3p22.1, MOBP , rs9842969, (0.51, [0.40-0.65]); 5p15.33, TERT , rs2242652, (0.70, (0.62-0.79]); 19q13.11, TM6SF2 , rs58542926, (1.49, [1.29-1.72]); 19p13.11 MAU2 , rs58489806, (1.53, (1.33-1.75]); and 22q13.31, PNPLA3 , rs738409, (1.66, [1.51-1.83]). One region was identified for HCV-induced HCC: 6p21.31, human leukocyte antigen DQ beta 1, rs9275224, (0.79, [0.74-0.84]). A combination of homozygous variants of PNPLA3 and TERT showing a 6.5-fold higher risk for nonviral-related HCC compared to individuals lacking these genotypes. This observation suggests that gene-gene interactions may identify individuals at elevated risk for developing HCC. CONCLUSIONS: Our GWAS highlights novel genetic susceptibility of nonviral HCC among European descent populations from North America with substantial heritability. Selected genetic influences were observed for HCV-positive HCC. Our findings indicate the importance of genetic susceptibility to HCC development
