Cosmological Parameters from the Comparison of the 2MASS Gravity Field with Peculiar Velocity Surveys
We compare the peculiar velocity field within 65 Mpc predicted from
2MASS photometry and public redshift data to three independent peculiar
velocity surveys based on type Ia supernovae, surface brightness fluctuations
in ellipticals, and Tully-Fisher distances to spirals. The three peculiar
velocity samples are each in good agreement with the predicted velocities and
produce consistent results for \beta_{K}=\Omega\sbr{m}^{0.6}/b_{K}. Taken
together the best fit . We explore the effects of
morphology on the determination of by splitting the 2MASS sample into
E+S0 and S+Irr density fields and find both samples are equally good tracers of
the underlying dark matter distribution, but that early-types are more
clustered by a relative factor b\sbr{E}/b\sbr{S} \sim 1.6. The density
fluctuations of 2MASS galaxies in Mpc spheres in the local volume is
found to be \sigma\sbr{8,K} = 0.9. From this result and our value of
, we find \sigma_8 (\Omega\sbr{m}/0.3)^{0.6} = 0.91\pm0.12. This
is in excellent agreement with results from the IRAS redshift surveys, as well
as other cosmological probes. Combining the 2MASS and IRAS peculiar velocity
results yields \sigma_8 (\Omega\sbr{m}^/0.3)^{0.6} = 0.85\pm0.05.Comment: 11 pages, ApJ accepte
Pauli Spin Blockade of Heavy Holes in a Silicon Double Quantum Dot
In this work, we study hole transport in a planar silicon
metal-oxide-semiconductor based double quantum dot. We demonstrate Pauli spin
blockade in the few hole regime and map the spin relaxation induced leakage
current as a function of inter-dot level spacing and magnetic field. With
varied inter-dot tunnel coupling we can identify different dominant spin
relaxation mechanisms. Applying a strong out-of-plane magnetic field causes an
avoided singlet-triplet level crossing, from which the heavy hole g-factor
0.93, and the strength of spin-orbit interaction 110 eV, can
be obtained. The demonstrated strong spin-orbit interaction of heavy hole
promises fast local spin manipulation using only electrical fields, which is of
great interest for quantum information processing.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figure
An 8-cm electron bombardment thruster for auxiliary propulsion
Thruster size, beam current level, and specific impulse trade-offs are considered for mercury electron bombardment ion thrusters to be used for north-south station keeping of geosynchronous spacecraft. An 8-cm diameter thruster operating at 2750 seconds specific impulse at thrust levels of 4.4 mN (1 m1b) to 8.9 mN (2 m6b) with a design life of 20,000 hours and 10,000 cycles is being developed. The thruster will have a dished two-grid system capable of thrust vectoring of + or - 10 degrees in two orthogonal directions. A preliminary thruster has been fabricated and tested; thruster performance characteristics have been determined at 4.45, 6.68, and 8.90 millinewtons
Gene-history correlation and population structure
Correlation of gene histories in the human genome determines the patterns of
genetic variation (haplotype structure) and is crucial to understanding genetic
factors in common diseases. We derive closed analytical expressions for the
correlation of gene histories in established demographic models for genetic
evolution and show how to extend the analysis to more realistic (but more
complicated) models of demographic structure. We identify two contributions to
the correlation of gene histories in divergent populations: linkage
disequilibrium, and differences in the demographic history of individuals in
the sample. These two factors contribute to correlations at different length
scales: the former at small, and the latter at large scales. We show that
recent mixing events in divergent populations limit the range of correlations
and compare our findings to empirical results on the correlation of gene

High performance auxiliary-propulsion ion thruster with ion-machined accelerator grid
An improvement in thruster performance was achieved by reducing the diameter of the accelerator grid holes. The smaller accelerator grid holes resulted in a reduction in neutral mercury atoms escaping the discharge chamber, which in turn enhanced the discharge propellant utilization from approximately 68 percent to 92 percent. The accelerator grids were fabricated by ion machining with an 8-centimeter-diameter thruster, and the screen grid holes individually focused ion beamlets onto the blank accelerator grid. The resulting accelerator grid holes are less than 1.12 millimeters in diameter, while previously used accelerator grids had hole diameters of 1.69 millimeters. Mapping for the Masses: Accessing Web 2.0 through Crowdsourcing
The authors describe how we are harnessing the power of web 2.0 technologies to create new approaches to collecting, mapping, and sharing geocoded data. The authors begin with GMapCreator that lets users fashion new maps using Google Maps as a base. The authors then describe MapTube that enables users to archive maps and demonstrate how it can be used in a variety of contexts to share map information, to put existing maps into a form that can be shared, and to create new maps from the bottom-up using a combination of crowdcasting, crowdsourcing, and traditional broadcasting. The authors conclude by arguing that such tools are helping to define a neogeography that is essentially "mapping for the masses,'' while noting that there are many issues of quality, accuracy, copyright, and trust that will influence the impact of these tools on map-based communication

Price impact of block trades in the Saudi stock market
This paper examines the price impact of block trades for the 124 companies that comprise all listed firms in the Saudi stock market (SSM). We use high frequency intraday data (one minute intervals) for the period 2005-2008 to provide out of sample evidence of the determinants of price impact. We find an asymmetric price impact of 0.5% for block purchases and -0.38% for block sales. We document a price continuation post block trades and a price reversal after block sales. Sellers of block trades in the Saudi market pay higher liquidity premiums than
buyers of block trades. However, on average, the price effect of a block trade is small and short-lived suggesting that resiliency is high in the market. Moreover, we find a direct relationship between the size of the trades and the level of information asymmetry in the market. Despite the structural differences of the SSM, the intraday pattern of price impacts is similar to patterns documented in other markets, namely an inverse J-shaped pattern. Finally,
sophisticated traders can gain abnormal profits in the SSM through “free riding”, a trader can benefit from the overreaction before the block trade and price reversal after the block trade
