Fluid valve assembly
A valve assembly is reported for controlling the flow of fluids between the inlet and outlet of a fluid valve. The valve assembly contains a barrier element which is porous for providing fluid communication between the valve inlet and outlet. The valve assembly also includes a sealing element that is movable relative to the barrier element between a first position, in which fluid flow through the porous portion of the barrier element is blocked preventing fluid communication between the valve inlet and outlet, and a second position, in which the porous portion is unblocked, permitting fluid communication between the valve inlet and outlet

Study of Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center utility systems
The results of an engineering study of potential energy saving utility system modifications for the NASA Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center are presented. The objective of the study was to define and analyze utility options that would provide facility energy savings in addition to the approximately 25 percent already achieved through an energy loads reduction program. A systems engineering approach was used to determine total system energy and cost savings resulting from each of the ten major options investigated. The results reported include detailed cost analyses and cost comparisons of various options. Cost are projected to the year 2000. Also included are a brief description of a mathematical model used for the analysis and the rationale used for a site survey to select buildings suitable for analysis
Coherent pumping of a Mott insulator: Fermi golden rule versus Rabi oscillations
Cold atoms provide a unique arena to study many-body systems far from
equilibrium. Furthermore, novel phases in cold atom systems are conveniently
investigated by dynamical probes pushing the system out of equilibrium. Here,
we discuss the pumping of doubly-occupied sites in a fermionic Mott insulator
by a periodic modulation of the hopping amplitude. We show that deep in the
insulating phase the many-body system can be mapped onto an effective two-level
system which performs coherent Rabi oscillations due to the driving. Coupling
the two-level system to the remaining degrees of freedom renders the Rabi
oscillations damped. We compare this scheme to an alternative description where
the particles are incoherently pumped into a broad continuum.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Criteria for self-ignition of supersonic hydrogen-air mixtures
A correlation of available self ignition data for supersonic hydrogen-air mixtures in configurations representative of scramjet combustors was made. The correlation was examined in light of simplified ignition-limit models. The data and model included cases of injection from transverse fuel jets on walls, transverse jets behind swept and unswept steps, and transverse injection ahead of swept and unswept steps and strut bases. The results provide useful guidance for predicting self ignition in a variety of applications. The likely regions for self ignition in a combustor are given in order of merit
Detecting solar axions using Earth's magnetic field
We show that solar axion conversion to photons in the Earth's magnetosphere
can produce an x-ray flux, with average energy \sim 4 keV, which is measurable
on the dark side of the Earth. The smallness of the Earth's magnetic field is
compensated by a large magnetized volume. For axion masses < 10^{-4} eV, a
low-Earth-orbit x-ray detector with an effective area of 10^4 cm^2, pointed at
the solar core, can probe the photon-axion coupling down to 10^{-11} GeV^{-1},
in one year. Thus, the sensitivity of this new approach will be an order of
magnitude beyond current laboratory limits.Comment: 3 pages, 1 figure, typos corrected, references adde
A gobal fit to the anomalous magnetic moment, Higgs limit and b->s gamma in the constrained MSSM
New data on the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon together with the b->s
gamma decay rate and Higgs limits are considered within the supergravity
inspired constrained minimal supersymmetric model. We perform a global
statistical chi2 analysis of these data and show that the allowed region of
parameter space is bounded from below by the Higgs limit, which depends on the
trilinear coupling and from above by the anomalous magnetic moment.Comment: 3 pages, To appear in Proc. of SUSY01, Dubna (Russia
Further investigation of a contactless patient-electrode interface of an Electrical Impedance Mammography system
The Sussex Mk4 Electrical Impedance Mammography (EIM) system is a novel instrument, designed for the detection of early breast cancer, based upon Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT). Many innovations in the field have been incorporated in the design improving both signal distribution and response. This paper investigates the behaviour of the contactless patient-electrode interface. The interface was studied in detail using phantom and healthy volunteer, in-vivo, data. Our findings show the necessity for the careful design of electrode enclosure so that the response of the system is not affected by the unpredictable positioning of the breast; it closely mimics those conditions seen when using the phantom. The paper includes a number of possible designs and their individual characteristics. In addition an explanation on the unanticipated effects and solutions for such are described. © 2010 IOP Publishing Ltd
Investigation of high efficiency GaAs solar cells
Investigations of basic mechanisms which limit the performance of high efficiency GaAs solar cells are discussed. P/N heteroface structures have been fabricated from MOCVD epiwafers. Typical AM1 efficiencies are in the 21 to 22 percent range, with a SERI measurement for one cell being 21.5 percent. The cells are nominally 1.5 x 1.5 cm in size. Studies have involved photoresponse, T-I-V analyses, and interpretation of data in terms of appropriate models to determine key cell parameters. Results of these studies are utilized to determine future approaches for increasing GaAs solar cell efficiencies
