    Relationship between gray matter structure and age in children and adolescents with high-functioning autism spectrum disorder

    ObjectiveThe present study used magnetic resonance imaging to investigate the difference in the relationship between gray matter structure and age in children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and typically developing (TD) subjects.MethodsAfter screening T1 structural images from the Autism Brain Imaging Data Exchange (ABIDE) database, 111 children and adolescents (7–18 years old) with high-functioning ASD and 151 TD subjects matched for age, sex and full IQ were included in the current study. By using the voxel-based morphological analysis method, gray matter volume/density (GMV/GMD) maps were obtained for each participant. Then, a multiple regression analysis was performed for ASD and TD groups, respectively to estimate the relationship between GMV/GMD and age with gender, education, site, and IQ scores as covariates. Furthermore, a z-test was used to compare such relationship difference between the groups.ResultsResults showed that compared with TD, the GMD of ASD showed stronger positive correlations with age in the prefrontal cortex, and a stronger negative correlation in the left inferior parietal lobule, and a weaker positive correlation in the right inferior parietal lobule. The GMV of ASD displayed stronger positive correlations with age in the prefrontal cortex and cerebellum.ConclusionThese findings may provide evidence to support that the brain structure abnormalities underlying ASD during childhood and adolescence may differ from each other

    Molecular epidemiology of hepatitis E virus infections in Shanghai, China

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Hepatitis E virus (HEV) causes acute or fulminant hepatitis in humans and is an important public health concern in many developing countries. China has a high incidence of HEV epidemics, with at least three genotypes (1, 3 and 4) and nine subtypes (1b, 1c, 3b, 4a, 4b, 4d, 4g, 4h and 4i) so far identified. Since genotype 3 and the newly identified subtype 4i have been exclusively limited geographically to Shanghai and its neighboring provinces, the epidemiology of HEV infections within the municipality, a major industrial and commercial center, deserves closer attention.</p> <p>Findings</p> <p>A total of 65 sequences, 60 located within the HEV SH-SW-zs1 genome [GenBank:<ext-link ext-link-id="EF570133" ext-link-type="gen">EF570133</ext-link>], together with five full-length swine and human HEV genomic sequences, all emanating from Shanghai, were retrieved from GenBank. Consistent with the primary role of genotype 4 in China overall, analysis of the sequences revealed this to have been the dominant genotype (58/65) in Shanghai. Six HEV subtypes (3b, 4a, 4b, 4d, 4h and 4i) were also represented. However, although subtype 4a is the dominant subtype throughout China, subtype 4i (29/65) was the most prevalent subtype among the Shanghai sequences, followed by subtypes 4d (10/65) and 4h (9/65). Subtypes 4h, 4i and 4d were found in both swine and humans, whereas 4b was found only in swine and subtype 4a only in humans.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Six different swine and human HEV subtypes have so far been documented in Shanghai. More molecular epidemiological investigations of HEV in swine, and particularly among the human population, should be undertaken.</p

    Fabrication of Au/Pd alloy nanoparticle/Pichia pastoris composites: a microorganism-mediated approach

In this present study, bimetallic Au/Pd NP/Pichia pastoris composites were successfully fabricated through a one-pot microbial reduction of aqueous HAuCl4 and PdCl2 in the presence of H-2 as an electron donor. Interestingly, flower-like alloy Au/Pd NP/Pichia pastoris composites were obtained under the following conditions, NaCl concentration 0.9% (w/v), molar ratio of Au/Pd (1 : 2) and the time for pre-adsorption of Au(III) and Pd(II) ions 15 min, through fresh yeast reduction. The mapping results from scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) with a high-angle annular dark field detector confirmed that the Au/Pd NPs on the surface of the yeast were indeed alloy. Furthermore, the energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements showed that the composition of the bimetallic NPs were consistent with the initial molar ratio of the precursors

    A Global Optimal Coherence Method for Multi-baseline InSAR Elevation Inversion

    A global optimal coherence method for elevation inversion from multi-baseline polarimetric InSAR data is proposed. The multi-baseline polarimetric InSAR data used in experiments were obtained by Chinese X-SAR system and Germany's E-SAR system. Through combining several full polarimetric InSAR images, the proposed method constructs the multi-baseline polarimetric InSAR coherency matrix, and solves the optimal interferograms under global optimal coherence criterion. The optimal interferograms generated by global optimal coherence method were used to calculate the elevation of target with multi-baseline InSAR elevation inversion method. The proposed method reduces the influence of different scattering centers effectively using multi-baseline InSAR, which improves the accuracy and reliability of the interferometric phase and eventually improves the accuracy of DEM. The results verify the validity of the proposed method

    Pneumonia and mortality risk in continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis patients with diabetic nephropathy.

    BACKGROUND: Although clinical experience suggests that patients with diabetes mellitus are more susceptible to several types of infections, the overall scope of pneumonia in continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) patients with diabetic nephropathy (DN) has received little attention. METHODS: This was a prospective observational cohort study in CAPD patients in which prognostic risks of pneumonia were evaluated in DN and non-DN patients by Cox regression analysis. Hazard ratios of pneumonia events, all-cause and pneumonia-related mortality were calculated by Kaplan-Meier curves and the Cox proportional hazards model for DN versus non-DN patients. RESULTS: A total of 1148 patients (58.6% male, 48.34±15.78 years) had a median follow-up of 23.8 months and a maximum follow-up of 72.0 months. The pneumonia incidence rate of 62.3/1,000 patient-years in CAPD patients with DN was significantly higher than that of 28.5/1,000 patient-years in non-DN patients. On multivariate analysis, independent predictors of pneumonia occurrence in CAPD patients with DN were high body mass index (hazard ratio [HR], 1.15; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.01-1.31; P = 0.037) and low serum albumin level (HR, 0.87; 95% CI, 0.78-0.98; P = 0.014). Older age (HR, 1.63; 95% CI, 1.35-1.96; P<0.001) was an independent risk factor for the presence of pneumonia in non-DN patients. CAPD patients with DN had higher pneumonia-related mortality (HR, 4.424; 95% CI, 1.871-10.461; P<0.001) and all-cause mortality (HR, 2.608; 95% CI, 1.890-3.599; P<0.001) hazards than their non-DN counterparts, even when extensive demographics, comorbidities, and lab adjustments were made. CONCLUSIONS: The pneumonia and all-cause mortality risks were strikingly higher in CAPD patients with DN than in non-DN counterparts, which may warrant further investigation and therapeutic care intensification

    Multi-attribute Aware Path Selection Approach for Efficient MPTCP-based Data Delivery

    With the increasing diversity of wireless access technologies, and the further integration of mobile communication and heterogeneous wireless networks, more and more mobile devices equipped with multiple network interfaces. The mobile devices, which have integrated multi-homing technology, can transmit data through multiple network interfaces to improve the quality of data transmission for users. The advantages of multi-homing technology have contributed to the rapid development of multipath protocols. Multipath Transmission Control Protocol (MPTCP) is an extension of the traditional Transmission Control Protocol (TCP), which can take advantage of the capabilities of multiple network interfaces to simultaneously make use of multiple paths for data transmission, aiming at improving the performance of the data delivery. Although the multi-homing mobile devices configuring MPTCP protocol can obtain a lot of benefits, the current MPTCP path selection mechanism is too simple resulting in some concerns. So, a multi-attribute aware path selection approach for MPTCP (MPTCP-MAPS) is proposed in the paper, which jointly taking the Round-Trip Time (RTT) and the packet loss rate (Loss) of transport layer into account for efficient data delivery. MPTCP-MAPS designs a Multi-attribute path switch Prober (MP) to enhance the efficiency of the path selection mechanism. The results, which are gained from a closing realistic simulation topology, demonstrate how MPTCP-MAPS' path selection approach is superior to the current MPTCP path selection mechanism in terms of continuity of mobile services and performance in heterogeneous wireless networks

    The BAF45D Protein Is Preferentially Expressed in Adult Neurogenic Zones and in Neurons and May Be Required for Retinoid Acid Induced PAX6 Expression

    Adult neurogenesis is important for the development of regenerative therapies for human diseases of the central nervous system (CNS) through the recruitment of adult neural stem cells (NSCs). NSCs are characterized by the capacity to generate neurons, astrocytes, and oligodendrocytes. To identify key factors involved in manipulating the adult NSC neurogenic fate thus has crucial implications for the clinical application. Here, we report that BAF45D is expressed in the subgranular zone (SGZ) of the dentate gyrus, the subventricular zone (SVZ) of the lateral ventricle, and the central canal (CC) of the adult spinal cord. Coexpression of BAF45D with glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), a radial glial like cell marker protein, was identified in the SGZ, the SVZ and the adult spinal cord CC. Quantitative analysis data indicate that BAF45D is preferentially expressed in the neurogenic zone of the LV and the neurons of the adult CNS. Furthermore, during the neuroectoderm differentiation of H9 cells, BAF45D is required for the expression of PAX6, a neuroectoderm determinant that is also known to regulate the self-renewal and neuronal fate specification of adult neural stem/progenitor cells. Together, our results may shed new light on the expression of BAF45D in the adult neurogenic zones and the contribution of BAF45D to early neural development

    BKCa participates in E2 inducing endometrial adenocarcinoma by activating MEK/ERK pathway

    Abstract Background The large-conductance, voltage-gated, calcium (Ca (2+))-activated potassium channel (BKCa) plays an important role in regulating Ca (2+) signaling and cell physiological function, and is aberrantly expressed in some types of cancers. The present study focuses on identifying the oncogenic potential and clinical significance of BKCa in endometrial adenocarcinoma, as well as exploring the mechanistic relevance by 17β -estradiol (E2) inducing aberrant activation of MEK1/2 and ERK1/2 via BKCa. Methods The expression of BKCa, ERK1/2 and p-ERK1/2 were examined by immunohistochemical staining in 263 cases, including 185 primary types I endometrial cancer tissues, 38 atypical endometrial hyperplasia tissues and 40 normal endometrium tissues. Cell growth, cycle, apoptosis rate, migration and invasion was separately tested in Ishikawa cells using siRNA-BKCa and/or E2 treatment, as well as the expression of these interested proteins by western blot analysis. Results We showed that expression of BKCa is significantly elevated in 185 types I endometrial adenocarcinoma tissues compared to those of the normal endometrium and atypical endometrial hyperplasia tissues. Furthermore, in vitro observations revealed that down-regulation of BKCa expression inhibited cell growth by both enhancing apoptosis and blocking G1/S transition, suppressed cell migration and invasion in Ishakiwa cells, and decreased the expression of p-MEK1/2 and p-ERK1/2. Additionally, RNAi-mediated knockdown of BKCa attenuated the increased cellular growth and invasion, as well as the elevated expression of p-MEK1/2 and p-ERK1/2 proteins, induced by E2 stimulation. More importantly, the aberrant expression of BKCa and p-ERK1/2 were closely related with poor prognostic factors in type I endometrial cancer, and up-regulated expression of p-ERK1/2 was significantly associated with shorter disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) and was an independent prognostic factor in type I endometrial cancer patients. Conclusion Our results demonstrated that BKCa and the key downstream effectors p-ERK1/2 could be involved in important signaling pathways in initiation and development of endometrial adenocarcinoma and may provide a new therapeutic approach for women with endometrial cancer
