    Gamma-Rays Produced in Cosmic-Ray Interactions and the TeV-band Spectrum of RX J1713.7-3946

    We employ the Monte Carlo particle collision code DPMJET3.04 to determine the multiplicity spectra of various secondary particles (in addition to π0\pi^0's) with γ\gamma's as the final decay state, that are produced in cosmic-ray (pp's and α\alpha's) interactions with the interstellar medium. We derive an easy-to-use γ\gamma-ray production matrix for cosmic rays with energies up to about 10 PeV. This γ\gamma-ray production matrix is applied to the GeV excess in diffuse Galactic γ\gamma-rays observed by EGRET, and we conclude the non-π0\pi^0 decay components are insufficient to explain the GeV excess, although they have contributed a different spectrum from the π0\pi^0-decay component. We also test the hypothesis that the TeV-band γ\gamma-ray emission of the shell-type SNR RX J1713.7-3946 observed with HESS is caused by hadronic cosmic rays which are accelerated by a cosmic-ray modified shock. By the χ2\chi^2 statistics, we find a continuously softening spectrum is strongly preferred, in contrast to expectations. A hardening spectrum has about 1% probability to explain the HESS data, but then only if a hard cutoff at 50-100 TeV is imposed on the particle spectrum.Comment: 3 pages; 4 figures; Contribution to the First GLAST Symposium, Standord, 200

    Analysis of the Movement of Chlamydomonas Flagella: The Function of the Radial-spoke System Is Revealed by Comparison of Wild-type and Mutant Flagella

    The mutation uni-1 gives rise to uniflagellate Chlamydomonas cells which rotate around a fixed point in the microscope field, so that the flagellar bending pattern can be photographed easily . This has allowed us to make a detailed analysis of the wild-type flagellar bending pattern and the bending patterns of flagella on several mutant strains. Cells containing uni-1, and recombinants of uni-1 with the suppressor mutations, sup(_pf)-1 and sup(_pf)-3, show the typical asymmetric bending pattern associated with forward swimming in Chlamydomonas, although sup(_pf)-1 flagella have about one-half the normal beat frequency, apparently as the result of defective function of the outer dynein arms. The pf-17 mutation has been shown to produce nonmotile flagella in which radial spoke heads and five characteristic axonemal polypeptides are missing. Recombinants containing pf-17 and either sup(_pf)-1 or sup(_pf)-3 have motile flagella, but still lack radial-spoke heads and the associated polypeptides . The flagellar bending pattern of these recombinants lacking radial-spoke heads is a nearly symmetric, large amplitude pattern which is quite unlike the wild-type pattern . However, the presence of an intact radial-spoke system is not required to convert active sliding into bending and is not required for bend initiation and bend propagation, since all of these processes are active in the sup(_pf) pf-17 recombinants. The function of the radial-spoke system appears to be to convert the symmetric bending pattern displayed by these recombinants into the asymmetric bending pattern required for efficient swimming, by inhibiting the development of reverse bends during the recovery phase of the bending cycle

    GEOS-3 ocean current investigation using radar altimeter profiling

    Both quasi-stationary and dynamic departures from the marine geoid were successfully detected using altitude measurements from the GEOS-3 radar altimeter. The quasi-stationary departures are observed either as elevation changes in single pass profiles across the Gulf Stream or at the crowding of contour lines at the western and northern areas of topographic maps generated using altimeter data spanning one month or longer. Dynamic features such as current meandering and spawned eddies can be monitored by comparing monthly mean maps. Comparison of altimeter inferred eddies with IR detected thermal rings indicates agreement of the two techniques. Estimates of current velocity are made using derived slope estimates in conjunction with the geostrophic equation

    From insulator to quantum Hall liquid at low magnetic fields

    We have performed low-temperature transport measurements on a GaAs two-dimensional electron system at low magnetic fields. Multiple temperature-independent points and accompanying oscillations are observed in the longitudinal resistivity between the low-field insulator and the quantum Hall (QH) liquid.     Anomalous Magnetic and Thermal Behavior in Some RMn2O5 Oxides

    The RMn2O5 (R=Pr, Nd, Sm, and Eu) oxides showing magnetoelectric (ME) behavior have been prepared in polycrystalline form by a standard citrate route. The lattice parameters, obtained from the powder XRD analysis, follow the rare-earth contraction indicating the trivalent character of the R ions. Cusp-like anomalies in the magnetic susceptibility curve and sharp peaks in the specific heat were reported at the corresponding temperatures in RMn2O5 (R=Pr, Nd, Sm, and Eu) indicating the magnetic or electric ordering transitions.Comment: 2 pages, 1 table, 3 figures, will be published in the Proceedings of the 24th International Conference on Low Temperature Physic
