Novel Technique for Ultra-sensitive Determination of Trace Elements in Organic Scintillators
A technique based on neutron activation has been developed for an extremely
high sensitivity analysis of trace elements in organic materials. Organic
materials are sealed in plastic or high purity quartz and irradiated at the
HFIR and MITR. The most volatile materials such as liquid scintillator (LS) are
first preconcentrated by clean vacuum evaporation. Activities of interest are
separated from side activities by acid digestion and ion exchange. The
technique has been applied to study the liquid scintillator used in the KamLAND
neutrino experiment. Detection limits of <2.4X10**-15 g 40K/g LS, <5.5X10**-15
g Th/g LS, and <8X10**-15 g U/g LS have been achieved.Comment: 16 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in Nuclear Instruments

Analysis of the dynamic changes in the soft palate and uvula in obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea using ultrafast magnetic resonance imaging
Apnea and the respiratory cycle are dynamic processes in obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea (OSAH), which occur only during sleep. Our study aimed to observe the dynamic changes in the soft palate and the uvula during wakefulness and sleep using ultrafast magnetic resonance imaging (UMRI) to provide reference data for the pathogenesis and treatment of OSAH. The dynamic changes in the soft palate and uvular tip of 15 male patients (average age: 50.43 ± 9.82 years) with OSAH were evaluated using UMRI of the upper airway while asleep and awake after 1 night of sleep deprivation. A series of midline sagittal images of the upper airway were obtained. The distance from the center of the soft palate to the x-axis (an extended line from the anterior nasal spine to the posterior nasal spine), from the uvular tip to the x-axis, from the center of the soft palate to the y-axis (a perpendicular line from the center of the pituitary to the x-axis), and from the uvular tip to the y-axis (designated as PX, UX, PY, and UY, respectively) were measured during sleep and wakefulness. The minimum PX, PY, UX, and UY were shorter during sleep than during wakefulness, whereas the maxima were longer during sleep (P < 0.01), the differences between the maximum and minimum PX, PY, UX, and UY were larger during sleep (P < 0.01). The upward, downward, forward, and backward ranges of movement of the soft palate and the uvular tip were larger during sleep in OSAH patients. This increased compliance may trigger each airway obstructive event
Fluctuations of an evaporating black hole from back reaction of its Hawking radiation: Questioning a premise in earlier work
This paper delineates the first steps in a systematic quantitative study of
the spacetime fluctuations induced by quantum fields in an evaporating black
hole. We explain how the stochastic gravity formalism can be a useful tool for
that purpose within a low-energy effective field theory approach to quantum
gravity. As an explicit example we apply it to the study of the
spherically-symmetric sector of metric perturbations around an evaporating
black hole background geometry. For macroscopic black holes we find that those
fluctuations grow and eventually become important when considering sufficiently
long periods of time (of the order of the evaporation time), but well before
the Planckian regime is reached. In addition, the assumption of a simple
correlation between the fluctuations of the energy flux crossing the horizon
and far from it, which was made in earlier work on spherically-symmetric
induced fluctuations, is carefully analyzed and found to be invalid. Our
analysis suggests the existence of an infinite amplitude for the fluctuations
of the horizon as a three-dimensional hypersurface. We emphasize the need for
understanding and designing operational ways of probing quantum metric
fluctuations near the horizon and extracting physically meaningful information.Comment: 10 pages, REVTeX; minor changes, a few references added and a brief

Current reversal with type-I intermittency in deterministic inertia ratchets
The intermittency is investigated when the current reversal occurs in a
deterministic inertia ratchet system. To determine which type the intermittency
belongs to, we obtain the return map of velocities of particle using
stroboscopic recording, and numerically calculate the distribution of average
laminar length . The distribution follows the scaling law of , the characteristic relation of type-I
intermittency.Comment: 4 pages, 7 figure
Noise Kernel and Stress Energy Bi-Tensor of Quantum Fields in Hot Flat Space and Gaussian Approximation in the Optical Schwarzschild Metric
Continuing our investigation of the regularization of the noise kernel in
curved spacetimes [N. G. Phillips and B. L. Hu, Phys. Rev. D {\bf 63}, 104001
(2001)] we adopt the modified point separation scheme for the class of optical
spacetimes using the Gaussian approximation for the Green functions a la
Bekenstein-Parker-Page. In the first example we derive the regularized noise
kernel for a thermal field in flat space. It is useful for black hole
nucleation considerations. In the second example of an optical Schwarzschild
spacetime we obtain a finite expression for the noise kernel at the horizon and
recover the hot flat space result at infinity. Knowledge of the noise kernel is
essential for studying issues related to black hole horizon fluctuations and
Hawking radiation backreaction. We show that the Gaussian approximated Green
function which works surprisingly well for the stress tensor at the
Schwarzschild horizon produces significant error in the noise kernel there. We
identify the failure as occurring at the fourth covariant derivative order.Comment: 21 pages, RevTeX
Linear Response, Validity of Semi-Classical Gravity, and the Stability of Flat Space
A quantitative test for the validity of the semi-classical approximation in
gravity is given. The criterion proposed is that solutions to the
semi-classical Einstein equations should be stable to linearized perturbations,
in the sense that no gauge invariant perturbation should become unbounded in
time. A self-consistent linear response analysis of these perturbations, based
upon an invariant effective action principle, necessarily involves metric
fluctuations about the mean semi-classical geometry, and brings in the
two-point correlation function of the quantum energy-momentum tensor in a
natural way. This linear response equation contains no state dependent
divergences and requires no new renormalization counterterms beyond those
required in the leading order semi-classical approximation. The general linear
response criterion is applied to the specific example of a scalar field with
arbitrary mass and curvature coupling in the vacuum state of Minkowski
spacetime. The spectral representation of the vacuum polarization function is
computed in n dimensional Minkowski spacetime, and used to show that the flat
space solution to the semi-classical Einstein equations for n=4 is stable to
all perturbations on distance scales much larger than the Planck length.Comment: 22 pages: This is a significantly expanded version of gr-qc/0204083,

Noise induced transitions in semiclassical cosmology
A semiclassical cosmological model is considered which consists of a closed
Friedmann-Robertson-Walker in the presence of a cosmological constant, which
mimics the effect of an inflaton field, and a massless, non-conformally coupled
quantum scalar field. We show that the back-reaction of the quantum field,
which consists basically of a non local term due to gravitational particle
creation and a noise term induced by the quantum fluctuations of the field, are
able to drive the cosmological scale factor over the barrier of the classical
potential so that if the universe starts near zero scale factor (initial
singularity) it can make the transition to an exponentially expanding de Sitter
phase. We compute the probability of this transition and it turns out to be
comparable with the probability that the universe tunnels from "nothing" into
an inflationary stage in quantum cosmology. This suggests that in the presence
of matter fields the back-reaction on the spacetime should not be neglected in
quantum cosmology.Comment: LaTex, 33.tex pages, no figure
Manufacturing process innovation-oriented knowledge evaluation using MCDM and fuzzy linguistic computing in an open innovation environment
© by the authors. In today's complex, constantly evolving and innovation-supporting manufacturing systems, knowledge plays a vital role in sustainable manufacturing process planning and problem-solving, especially in the case of Computer-Aided Process Innovation (CAPI). To obtain formalized and promising process innovation knowledge under the open innovation paradigm, it is necessary to evaluate candidate knowledge and encourage improvement suggestions based on actual innovation situations. This paper proposes a process innovation-oriented knowledge evaluation approach using Multi-Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) and fuzzy linguistic computing. Firstly, a comprehensive hierarchy evaluation index system for process innovation knowledge is designed. Secondly, by combining an analytic hierarchy process with fuzzy linguistic computing, a comprehensive criteria weighting determination method is applied to effectively aggregate the evaluation of criteria weights for each criterion and corresponding sub-criteria. Furthermore, fuzzy linguistic evaluations of performance ratings for each criterion and corresponding sub-criteria are calculated. Thus, a process innovation knowledge comprehensive value can be determined. Finally, an illustrative example of knowledge capture, evaluation and knowledge-inspired process problem solving for micro-turbine machining is presented to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed approach. It is expected that our model would lay the foundation for knowledge-driven CAPI in sustainable manufacturing. This work was partly supported by the Fundamental Research Funds for the Central Universities of China (Grant Nos. 310825171004, 310825171006 and 310825171007), and the Industrial Research Project of Science and Technology Department of Shaanxi Province, China (Grant No. 2016GY-003)
First Measurements of Rayleigh-Taylor-Induced Magnetic Fields in Laser-produced Plasmas
The first experimental demonstration of Rayleigh-Taylor-induced magnetic fields due to the Biermann battery effect has been made. Experiments with laser-irradiated plastic foils were performed to investigate these illusive fields using a monoenergetic proton radiography system. Path-integrated B field strength measurements were inferred from radiographs and found to increase from 10 to 100 T μm during the linear growth phase for 120 μm perturbations. Proton fluence modulations were corrected for Coulomb scattering using measured areal density profiles from x-ray radiographs.United States. Condensate cosmology -- dark energy from dark matter
Imagine a scenario in which the dark energy forms via the condensation of
dark matter at some low redshift. The Compton wavelength therefore changes from
small to very large at the transition, unlike quintessence or metamorphosis. We
study CMB, large scale structure, supernova and radio galaxy constraints on
condensation by performing a 4 parameter likelihood analysis over the Hubble
constant and the three parameters associated with Q, the condensate field:
Omega_Q, w_f and z_t (energy density and equation of state today, and redshift
of transition). Condensation roughly interpolates between Lambda CDM (for large
z_t) and sCDM (low z_t) and provides a slightly better fit to the data than
Lambda CDM. We confirm that there is no degeneracy in the CMB between H and z_t
and discuss the implications of late-time transitions for the Lyman-alpha
forest. Finally we discuss the nonlinear phase of both condensation and
metamorphosis, which is much more interesting than in standard quintessence
models.Comment: 13 pages, 13 colour figures. Final version with discussion of TE
