Biodegradable Polylactic Acid (PLA) Microstructures for Scaffold Applications
In this research, we present a simple and cost effective soft lithographic
process to fabricate PLA scaffolds for tissue engineering. In which, the
negative photoresist JSR THB-120N was spun on a glass subtract followed by
conventional UV lithographic processes to fabricate the master to cast the PDMS
elastomeric mold. A thin poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) layer was used as a mode
release such that the PLA scaffold can be easily peeled off. The PLA precursor
solution was then cast onto the PDMS mold to form the PLA microstructures.
After evaporating the solvent, the PLA microstructures can be easily peeled off
from the PDMS mold. Experimental results show that the desired microvessels
scaffold can be successfully transferred to the biodegradable polymer PLA.Comment: Submitted on behalf of EDA Publishing Association

Interface-induced heavy-hole/light-hole splitting of acceptors in silicon
The energy spectrum of spin-orbit coupled states of individual sub-surface
boron acceptor dopants in silicon have been investigated using scanning
tunneling spectroscopy (STS) at cryogenic temperatures. The spatially resolved
tunnel spectra show two resonances which we ascribe to the heavy- and
light-hole Kramers doublets. This type of broken degeneracy has recently been
argued to be advantageous for the lifetime of acceptor-based qubits [Phys. Rev.
B 88 064308 (2013)]. The depth dependent energy splitting between the heavy-
and light-hole Kramers doublets is consistent with tight binding calculations,
and is in excess of 1 meV for all acceptors within the experimentally
accessible depth range (< 2 nm from the surface). These results will aid the
development of tunable acceptor-based qubits in silicon with long coherence
times and the possibility for electrical manipulation
eAuctions: Impact of Network Externalities on Sellers\u27 Behavior
Virtual markets are becoming more and more accepted by buyers and sellers. The success of eBay has prompted other companies to offer auction sites to lure buyers and sellers. The new companies usually offer lower rates to attract virtual sellers thereby multiplying the number of options for virtual buyers. This project presents an exploratory study of the final value available to sellers on two different auction sites, eBay and Yahoo! Auctions. Specifically, the study aims at finding whether or not the leading Internet auction site provides a better opportunity for sellers to extract more consumer surplus by selling goods for higher prices. The statistical analysis shows that in the leading site (eBay) the number of bids placed is greater, the average final price offered is higher, and the average final value is higher than in the competing site (Yahoo!). These findings are important to virtual sellers and buyers and to new organizations promoting virtual markets
Outpatient antibiotic prescription trends in the United States: A national cohort study

Prescription pharmacy beneficiaries from Express Scripts Holding CompanyMEASUREMENTSAnnual and seasonal percent change in antibiotic prescriptionsRESULTSApproximately 98 million outpatient antibiotic prescriptions were filled by 39 million insurance beneficiaries during the 3-year study period. The most commonly prescribed antibiotics were azithromycin, amoxicillin, amoxicillin/clavulanate, ciprofloxacin, and cephalexin. No significant changes in individual or overall annual antibiotic prescribing rates were found during the study period. Significant seasonal variation was observed, with antibiotics being 42% more likely to be prescribed during February than September (peak-to-trough ratio [PTTR], 1.42; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.39–1.61). Similar seasonal trends were found for azithromycin (PTTR, 2.46; 95% CI, 2.44–3.47), amoxicillin (PTTR, 1.52; 95% CI, 1.42–1.89), and amoxicillin/clavulanate (PTTR, 1.78; 95% CI, 1.68–2.29).CONCLUSIONSThis study demonstrates that annual national outpatient antibiotic prescribing practices remained unchanged during our study period. Furthermore, seasonal peaks in antibiotics generally used to treat viral upper respiratory tract infections remained unchanged during cold and influenza season. These results suggest that inappropriate prescribing of antibiotics remains widespread, despite the concurrent release of several guideline-based best practices intended to reduce inappropriate antibiotic consumption; however, further research linking national outpatient antibiotic prescriptions to associated medical conditions is needed to confirm these findings.Infect Control Hosp Epidemiol 2018;39:584–589</jats:sec
Effective antibiotic conservation by emergency antimicrobial stewardship during a drug shortage
We present the first description of an antimicrobial stewardship program (ASP) used to successfully manage a multi-antimicrobial drug shortage. Without resorting to formulary restriction, meropenem utilization decreased by 69% and piperacillin-tazobactam by 73%. Renin-Angiotensin-Aldosterone System, Glucose Metabolism and Incident Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: MESA.
Background Mechanistic studies suggest that aldosterone impairs glucose metabolism. We investigated the cross-sectional associations of aldosterone and plasma renin activity with fasting plasma glucose, insulin resistance ( IR ), β-cell function, and longitudinal association with incident diabetes mellitus among adults in MESA (the multiethnic study of atherosclerosis) prospective cohort study. Methods and Results Homeostatic model assessment of IR ( HOMA 2- IR ) and HOMA 2-β were used to estimate IR and β-cell function, respectively. Incident diabetes mellitus was defined as fasting plasma glucose ≥126 mg/dL or anti-diabetic medication use at follow-up. Linear regression was used to examine cross-sectional associations of aldosterone with fasting plasma glucose, HOMA 2- IR and HOMA 2-β; Cox regression was used to estimate hazard ratios ( HR ) for incident diabetes mellitus with multivariable adjustment. There were 116 cases of incident diabetes mellitus over 10.5 years among 1570 adults (44% non-Hispanic white, 13% Chinese American, 19% Black, 24% Hispanic American, mean age 64±10 years, 51% female). A 100% increase in log-aldosterone was associated with a 2.6 mg/dL higher fasting plasma glucose, 15% higher HOMA 2- IR and 6% higher HOMA 2-β ( P<0.01). A 1- SD increase in log-aldosterone was associated with a 44% higher risk of incident diabetes mellitus ( P<0.01) with the greatest increase of 142% ( P<0.01) observed in Chinese Americans ( P for interaction=0.09 versus other ethnicities). Similar cross-sectional findings for log-plasma renin activity existed, but log-plasma renin activity was not associated with incident diabetes mellitus after full adjustment. Conclusions Aldosterone is associated with glucose homeostasis and diabetes mellitus risk with graded associations among Chinese Americans and blacks, suggesting that pleiotropic effects of aldosterone may represent a modifiable mechanism in diabetes mellitus pathogenesis with potential racial/ethnic variation

poster abstractToday the amount of information available to individuals is staggering and they often are at a loss when choosing to purchase products. In the case of readers, they have an infinite amount of book available to read. However, they often do not know how to give credibility to the books that are available to them. In this class project we look at “How might we help readers make an informed decision about choosing books.” This research focused on the influences that affect reader’s decisions to purchase literary items. When people buy books there are many things that influence their decision. These influences can be internal perception (wants and needs) or they can take the form of external influences. In the case of influences, the strongest motivation seems to be a communal engagement and a shared experience. As such people place a high value on the perceptions of individuals around them. In our study we look at how people who are interested in books would share information and what outlets would they use to communicate to others. We focus on a qualitative methodology utilizing a co-design process. Our process was to involve readers within the idea generation process to study the effectiveness of working simultaneously to understand people’s needs while utilizing co-design principals to understand how to meet those needs. Our research found, individuals place high value on information from their community members, when making decisions on what books to read. Based on our research, readers would be interested in a way to categories and share their reading choices. We believe there is a need for a platform that allows individuals to share their reading interests with other members of their community
