Study on the Correlation between Objective Evaluations and Subjective Speech Quality and Intelligibility
Subjective tests are the gold standard for evaluating speech quality and
intelligibility, but they are time-consuming and expensive. Thus, objective
measures that align with human perceptions are crucial. This study evaluates
the correlation between commonly used objective measures and subjective speech
quality and intelligibility using a Chinese speech dataset. Moreover, new
objective measures are proposed combining current objective measures using deep
learning techniques to predict subjective quality and intelligibility. The
proposed deep learning model reduces the amount of training data without
significantly impacting prediction performance. We interpret the deep learning
model to understand how objective measures reflect subjective quality and
intelligibility. We also explore the impact of including subjective speech
quality ratings on speech intelligibility prediction. Our findings offer
valuable insights into the relationship between objective measures and human
perceptions
Comparison of power control schemes for relay sensor networks
[[abstract]]Three power control schemes for the space-time coded amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying scheme targeting at wireless sensor network applications are examined and compared. The opportunistic scheme performs the best by considering the signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) of the received signal. However, if the power for the relay is limited, the performance of the opportunistic scheme degrades due to the loss of active relay nodes that have better channel conditions. Since the battery lifetime of nodes for wireless sensor networks is limited and the loss of relay nodes is critical to system performance, we propose an SNR-constrained power reduction scheme to prolong the relay lifetime for the opportunistic scheme. It is demonstrated by computer simulation that the opportunistic scheme with SNR-constrained power reduction is power efficient and the relay lifetime of dense relay networks can be significantly prolonged. © 2007 IEEE.[[fileno]]2030137030003[[department]]電機工程å¸
Time-Domain Multi-modal Bone/air Conducted Speech Enhancement
Previous studies have proven that integrating video signals, as a
complementary modality, can facilitate improved performance for speech
enhancement (SE). However, video clips usually contain large amounts of data
and pose a high cost in terms of computational resources and thus may
complicate the SE system. As an alternative source, a bone-conducted speech
signal has a moderate data size while manifesting speech-phoneme structures,
and thus complements its air-conducted counterpart. In this study, we propose a
novel multi-modal SE structure in the time domain that leverages bone- and
air-conducted signals. In addition, we examine two ensemble-learning-based
strategies, early fusion (EF) and late fusion (LF), to integrate the two types
of speech signals, and adopt a deep learning-based fully convolutional network
to conduct the enhancement. The experiment results on the Mandarin corpus
indicate that this newly presented multi-modal (integrating bone- and
air-conducted signals) SE structure significantly outperforms the single-source
SE counterparts (with a bone- or air-conducted signal only) in various speech
evaluation metrics. In addition, the adoption of an LF strategy other than an

Neurological Complications in Young Infants With Acute Bacterial Meningitis
We aimed to evaluate the occurrence, treatment, and outcomes of neurological complications after bacterial meningitis in young infants. A case series study from a retrospective cohort from two tertiary-level medical centers in Taiwan between 2007 and 2016 was conducted. Eighty-five young infants aged < 90 days with bacterial meningitis were identified. 25 (29.4%) were born at preterm. Group B Streptococcus (GBS) and Escherichia coli caused 74.1% of identified cases. Despite the majority (90.6%) initially received microbiologically appropriate antibiotics, 65 (76.5%) had experienced at least one neurological complication identified at a median of 6 days (range: 1–173) after onset of bacterial meningitis. The most common neurological complication was seizure (58.8%), followed by subdural effusion (47.1%), ventriculomegaly (41.2%), subdural empyema (21.2%), hydrocephalus (18.8%), ventriculitis (15.3%), periventricular leukomalacia (11.8%), and encephalomalacia (10.6%). Nine patients (10.6%) died (including 4 had critical discharge on request) and 29/76 (38.2%) of the survivors had major neurological sequelae at discharge. Nighteen (22.4%) received surgical intervention due to these complications. After multivariate logistic regression, initial seizure (adjusted odds ratio [aOR]: 4.76, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.7–13.0, P = 0.002) and septic shock (aOR: 6.04; 95% CI: 1.35–27.0, P = 0.019) were independent predictors for final unfavorable outcomes.Conclusions: Neurological complications and sequelae are common in young infants after bacterial meningitis. Patients presented with early seizure or septic shock can be an early predictor of final unfavorable outcomes and require close monitoring. Further research regarding how to improve clinical management and outcomes is warranted
