Health state utility data in Cystic Fibrosis: A systematic review

Introduction: Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a life-limiting, hereditable condition, with the highest prevalence in Europe. CF treatments have led to improvements in clinical symptoms, disease management and decelerated disease progression. However, little is known about the health state utility (HSU) associated with CF disease states, adverse events, and changes in disease severity. Although HSU data have contributed to existing health economic modelling studies, a lack of such data have been highlighted. This systematic review aims to provide a summary of HSU-related research in CF and highlight related research gaps. Methods: Online searches were performed in six databases and studies in any of the following categories were included: (1) estimation of HSUs in CF; (2) mapping studies between patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) and HSUs; (3) economic evaluations on the management of CF that report primary HSU data; and (4) any CF clinical trial that reported HSU as an outcome. Results: A total of 17 studies were reviewed, of which 12 provided HSU values for specific CF populations. The remaining five articles provided HSU data that were broken down by CF relevant health states, including lung transplantations, pulmonary exacerbation (PEx) events and forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV 1). Conclusion: Current HSU data in CF are limited and there is considerable scope for further research, both in providing HSU values for CF and in investigating methods for HSU elicitation/evaluation in CF populations

Laboratory simulations of astrophysical jets and solar coronal loops: new results

An experimental program underway at Caltech has produced plasmas where the shape is neither fixed by the vacuum chamber nor fixed by an external coil set, but instead is determined by self-organization. The plasma dynamics is highly reproducible and so can be studied in considerable detail even though the morphology of the plasma is both complex and time-dependent. A surprising result has been the observation that self-collimating MHD-driven plasma jets are ubiquitous and play a fundamental role in the self-organization. The jets can be considered lab-scale simulations of astrophysical jets and in addition are intimately related to solar coronal loops. The jets are driven by the combination of the axial component of the J×B force and the axial pressure gradient resulting from the non-uniform pinch force associated with the flared axial current density. Behavior is consistent with a model showing that collimation results from axial non-uniformity of the jet velocity. In particular, flow stagnation in the jet frame compresses frozen-in azimuthal magnetic flux, squeezes together toroidal magnetic field lines, thereby amplifying the embedded toroidal magnetic field, enhancing the pinch force, and hence causing collimation of the jet

Higher congruences between newforms and Eisenstein series of squarefree level

Let $p\geq 5$ be prime. For elliptic modular forms of weight 2 and level $\Gamma_0(N)$ where $N>6$ is squarefree, we bound the depth of Eisenstein congruences modulo $p$ (from below) by a generalized Bernoulli number with correction factors and show how this depth detects the local non-principality of the Eisenstein ideal. We then use admissibility results of Ribet and Yoo to give an infinite class of examples where the Eisenstein ideal is not locally principal. Lastly, we illustrate these results with explicit computations and give an interesting commutative algebra application related to Hilbert--Samuel multiplicities.Comment: 19 pages. Minor revisions. Drawing upon Cal’s eventual metamorphosis into “The [white] Man” in Middlesex, and an examination of the Real of ecological crisis, Hsu explores the intersection of environmental racism, climate change denial, and intersex discrimination in order to advocate for a renewed awareness of ecological interdependency and the need for self-determination of people of colour in ecological and environmental justice discourses

SMALL-SCALE SAFETY TEST REPORT FOR RDX (SECOND CALIBRATION)

RDX was provided by Indian Head and was dried at 60 C for 16 hours, cooled and kept in a desiccator before use. Please note that the impact testing was done on both pellets and loose powder which resulted in different data. The impact sensitivity on pressed pellets was 34 cm that is greater than that on loose powder, as expected. The impact test data on the loose powder was similar to what Indian Head and LANL got. Remarkable consistent results were observed for test results of loose powder RDX. The average impact sensitivyt (DH{sub 50}) was 21.8 cm and the average friction sensitivity (F{sub 50}) for loose powder was 24.9 kg, respectively. DSC charts showed that peak temperatures and onset temperatures for all 3 runs of RDX samples were almost identical. All electrostatic spark sensitivity was 0/10 at 1.0 J with a 510-ohm resistor in the discharge circuit

The True Colors of Cuprates

Optical experiments by Molegraaf et al reveal that the superconducting condensation energy of Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+\delta} originates in lowering of kinetic energy of the carriers.
