A Lower Bound of Conditional Branches for Boolean Satisfiability on Post Machines
We establish a lower bound of conditional branches for deciding the
satisfiability of the conjunction of any two Boolean formulas from a set called
a full representation of Boolean functions of variables - a set containing
a Boolean formula to represent each Boolean function of variables. The
contradiction proof first assumes that there exists a Post machine (Post's
Formulation 1) that correctly decides the satisfiability of the conjunction of
any two Boolean formulas from such a set by following an execution path that
includes fewer than conditional branches. By using multiple runs of this
Post machine, with one run for each Boolean function of variables, the
proof derives a contradiction by showing that this Post machine is unable to
correctly decide the satisfiability of the conjunction of at least one pair of
Boolean formulas from a full representation of -variable Boolean functions
if the machine executes fewer than conditional branches. This lower bound
of conditional branches holds for any full representation of Boolean
functions of variables, even if a full representation consists solely of
minimized Boolean formulas derived by a Boolean minimization method. We discuss
why the lower bound fails to hold for satisfiability of certain restricted
formulas, such as 2CNF satisfiability, XOR-SAT, and HORN-SAT. We also relate
the lower bound to 3CNF satisfiability. The lower bound does not depend on
sequentiality of access to the boxes in the symbol space and will hold even if
a machine is capable of non-sequential access.Comment: This article draws heavily from arXiv:1406.597
Lone Higgs at the LHC
We address the possible scenario that the Large Hadron Collider (LHC)
discovers only a Higgs boson after 10 fb^{-1} of operation, and attempt to
identify this Higgs boson as that of the Standard Model (SM), the minimal
universal extra dimension model (MUED), the littlest Higgs model with T-parity
(LHT), or the minimal supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM), using only the
measurement of the product of gluon-fusion production cross section and the
di-photon branching ratio. In MUED, by decoupling any new physics sufficiently
to evade the discovery reach at the LHC, the deviation of the signal from the
SM is not statistically significant. However, in LHT and MSSM, it is possible
to have a significant deviation in the signal that is consistent with this
"lone Higgs scenario", and, in the case of a very large suppression, we can
distinguish MSSM and LHT before the discovery of any new resonances. Starting
with the lone Higgs scenario and the deviation in this measurement from the
Standard Model prediction (whether or not statistically significant), we offer
tests that may discriminate the models and search strategies of discovering new
physics signatures with increasing integrated luminosity.Comment: 32 pages, 25 figures, PRD versio
Immotthia atrograna (Dacampiaceae, Ascomycota), a new for Ukraine fungicolous fungus from the Carpathians
The paper reports first records of new for Ukraine genus and species of fungicolous fungi, Immotthia atrograna (Cooke et Ellis) M.E. Barr. All collections were made in old-growth forests within protected areas in the Ukrainian Carpathians during recent mycological surveys. The fungus was found to be associated with two xylariaceous species, Annulohypoxylon cohaerens (Pers.) Y.M. Ju, J.D. Rogers et H.M. Hsieh and A. multiforme (Fr.) Y.M. Ju, J.D. Rogers et H.M. Hsieh. Diagnostic description, nomenclature data, geographical distribution and original illustrations for both sexual and asexual morphs of the reported species are provided. Morphologically similar fungicolous fungi are briefly reviewed and compared
How I see it: An exploratory study on attributions and emotions in L2 learning
Learners’ attributions have received increasing attention in second/foreign language (L2) learning. Studies have shown that how learners attribute their performance influences not only their self-efficacy, motivation, and goal attainment but also their emotions (Hsieh, 2012; Hsieh & Kang, 2010; Hsieh & Shallert, 2008; Weiner, 2000, 2014). This exploratory study investigated how Japanese adult learners of L2 English attributed changes in their L2 learning attitudes and motivation through a 10-week TOEIC preparation program. It also examined emotions expressed in their attributional statements and the differences between learners with lower and higher L2 proficiency. A content analysis of open-ended questionnaire responses suggested eight attributional categories: perceived L2 improvement, enjoyment, positive feelings, increased L2 exposure, realization of L2 needs and importance, effective L2 instruction, and praise from the teacher for positive changes in attitudes and/or motivation and perceived inefficient L2 skills for negative changes in attitudes and/or motivation. Enjoyment was an emotion the most frequently mentioned by both groups while other emotions, such as joy, happiness, and disappointment, were expressed only by the beginner learners. These results offer important implications for L2 pedagogy and prospects for further research in the area

Book Review: Hsieh Liang-tso and the Analects of Confucius: Humane Learning as a Religious Quest
Hsieh Liang-tso is the first volume to explore Chinese traditions in the Academy Series sponsored by Oxford and the American Academy of Religion. Most previous titles in the series focus on Christianity, which perhaps explains Selover’s attention to the perspectives of comparative religions and comparative theology in his introduction. There he briefly traces the history of the issues concerning the religious dimensions of the Chinese literati tradition and outlines a comparative framework for approaching eleventh-century Chinese thought. Inspired by Robert Neville’s Beyond the Masks of God, Selover focuses in the introduction on four themes—scripture, tradition, reason, and experience. This framework, however, does not figure prominently until the conclusion. [excerpt
RESTRICTION OF EISENSTEIN SERIES AND STARK-HEEGNER POINTS (Analytic, geometric and -adic aspects of automorphic forms and -functions)
The paper [M.-L. Hsieh and S. Yamana, Restriction of Eisenstein series and Stark-Heegner points, arXiv:2002.11858.] was finished later after the conference. The text of this note has some overlapping with the content in [M.-L. Hsieh and S. Yamana, Restriction of Eisenstein series and Stark-Heegner points, arXiv:2002.11858.].This short note is written based on my talk on a joint work with Shunsuke Yamana [HY20] in the RIMS conference "Analytic, geometric and p-adic aspects of automorphic forms and L-functions" during January 20-24, 2020. The author thanks the organizers for their hospitality during the conference
