    Compressive Wavefront Sensing with Weak Values

    We demonstrate a wavefront sensor based on the compressive sensing, single-pixel camera. Using a high-resolution spatial light modulator (SLM) as a variable waveplate, we weakly couple an optical field's transverse-position and polarization degrees of freedom. By placing random, binary patterns on the SLM, polarization serves as a meter for directly measuring random projections of the real and imaginary components of the wavefront. Compressive sensing techniques can then recover the wavefront. We acquire high quality, 256x256 pixel images of the wavefront from only 10,000 projections. Photon-counting detectors give sub-picowatt sensitivity

    Photon counting compressive depth mapping

    We demonstrate a compressed sensing, photon counting lidar system based on the single-pixel camera. Our technique recovers both depth and intensity maps from a single under-sampled set of incoherent, linear projections of a scene of interest at ultra-low light levels around 0.5 picowatts. Only two-dimensional reconstructions are required to image a three-dimensional scene. We demonstrate intensity imaging and depth mapping at 256 x 256 pixel transverse resolution with acquisition times as short as 3 seconds. We also show novelty filtering, reconstructing only the difference between two instances of a scene. Finally, we acquire 32 x 32 pixel real-time video for three-dimensional object tracking at 14 frames-per-second.Comment: 16 pages, 8 figure

    Narrative support for young game designers’ writing

    Creating narrative-based computer games is a complex and challenging task. Narrative Threads is a suite of software tools designed to aid young people (aged 11-15) in creating their own narrative-based games as a writing development activity. A participatory design process highlighted the areas where additional support was required, and informed the iterative design of Narrative Threads. The tools are implemented as a plugin to a commercial game creation toolset, and constitute character and object design tools, a branching narrative diagramming tool and an augmented story map view. In this paper, we provide an overview of the design of the tools and describe an evaluation carried out with 14 children over a four-day workshop. The study examined tool usage patterns, and compared games created with Narrative Threads to those created using the standard toolset. The results suggest a number of ways in which dynamic external representations of story elements can support writing activities in narrative-based game creation. Young designers using Narrative Threads wrote more character dialogue, made stronger links between the conversations they wrote and wider game events, and designed more complex characters, compared to those using the standard toolset. In addition to showing how Narrative Threads can support young games designers, the results have broader implications for anyone looking to support storytelling and writing through game creation activities and tools

    Estudio de la absorción capilar y la sorptividad de hormigones con áridos calizos cubanos

    The objective of this study was to demonstrate the possibility to obtain concretes in Cuba with values of effective porosity below of 10%, using limestone aggregates with high levels of absorption (higher than 1% in many cases), and values of Sorptivity below of 5 x 10-5 m/s1/2 as is established in the document prepared by the DURAR Latin Working Group, for structures exposed to very aggressive environments. The experimental results showed that the use of the trial method of capillary absorption of Göran Fagerlund, were obtained concretes with effective porosity below of the 10%, for water/cement ratios of 0.4 and 0.45, but the values of sorptivities were very high. Nevertheless the subsequent use of the trial method of the ASTM C1585, that use cylinders probes with bigger depth and different processing, permits to obtain the desired sorptivity values for water/cement ratios of 0.4 and 0.45 whenever would be fulfilled the Good Practices of the Construction.El objetivo del estudio fue demostrar la posibilidad de lograr en Cuba, con el empleo de áridos calizos de elevada absorción (mayores del 1% en muchos casos), hormigones con valores de porosidad efectiva inferiores al 10% y de velocidad de absorción capilar (Sorptividad) inferiores a 5 x 10-5 m/s1/2, tal como establece el documento elaborado por la RED DURAR del CYTED para estructuras expuestas a ambientes muy agresivos. Los resultados experimentales mostraron que con la aplicación del método de ensayo de absorción capilar de Göran Fagerlund se obtuvieron porosidades efectivas inferiores al 10% para relaciones agua/cemento de 0,4 y 0,45, pero los valores de sorptividad fueron muy elevados. No obstante la aplicación posterior del método de ensayo de la ASTM C1585 que utiliza probetas de mayor espesor y diferente tratamiento, permitió obtener los valores indicados de sorptividad para relaciones agua/cemento de 0,4; 0,45 siempre que se cumplan las Buenas Prácticas constructivas

    Compressively characterizing high-dimensional entangled states with complementary, random filtering

    The resources needed to conventionally characterize a quantum system are overwhelmingly large for high- dimensional systems. This obstacle may be overcome by abandoning traditional cornerstones of quantum measurement, such as general quantum states, strong projective measurement, and assumption-free characterization. Following this reasoning, we demonstrate an efficient technique for characterizing high-dimensional, spatial entanglement with one set of measurements. We recover sharp distributions with local, random filtering of the same ensemble in momentum followed by position---something the uncertainty principle forbids for projective measurements. Exploiting the expectation that entangled signals are highly correlated, we use fewer than 5,000 measurements to characterize a 65, 536-dimensional state. Finally, we use entropic inequalities to witness entanglement without a density matrix. Our method represents the sea change unfolding in quantum measurement where methods influenced by the information theory and signal-processing communities replace unscalable, brute-force techniques---a progression previously followed by classical sensing.Comment: 13 pages, 7 figure
