Cold acclimation of Concord grapevines III. Relationship between cold hardiness, tissue water content, and shoot maturation
Cold acclimation of Concord grapevines in Michigan begins as early as late August in tissues at the base of current season's growth.Increases in cold hardiness are closely related to decreases in tissue water content as stems achieve vegetative maturity.Greatest differences in hardiness and water content are found in tissues which vary the most in extent of maturation on both primary shoots and summer laterals.Increases in cold resistance are not related to water saturation deficit (WSD) of shoots
Is there Evidence for a Hubble bubble? The Nature of Type Ia Supernova Colors and Dust in External Galaxies
We examine recent evidence from the luminosity-redshift relation of Type Ia
Supernovae (SNe Ia) for the detection of a ``Hubble bubble'' --
a departure of the local value of the Hubble constant from its globally
averaged value \citep{Jha:07}. By comparing the MLCS2k2 fits used in that study
to the results from other light-curve fitters applied to the same data, we
demonstrate that this is related to the interpretation of SN color excesses
(after correction for a light-curve shape-color relation) and the presence of a
color gradient across the local sample. If the slope of the linear relation
() between SN color excess and luminosity is fit empirically, then the
bubble disappears. If, on the other hand, the color excess arises purely from
Milky Way-like dust, then SN data clearly favors a Hubble bubble. We
demonstrate that SN data give , instead of the
one would expect from purely Milky-Way-like dust. This suggests that either SN
intrinsic colors are more complicated than can be described with a single
light-curve shape parameter, or that dust around SN is unusual. Disentangling
these possibilities is both a challenge and an opportunity for large-survey SN
Ia cosmology.Comment: Further information and data at

The location of an active nucleus and a shadow of a tidal tail in the ULIRG Mrk 273
Analysis of data from the Chandra X-ray Observatory for the double nucleus ULIRG Mrk 273 reveals an absorbed hard X-ray source coincident with the southwest nucleus, implying that this unresolved, near-infrared source is where an active nucleus resides, while the northern nuclear region contains a powerful starburst that dominates the far infrared luminosity. There is evidence of a slight image extension in the 6–7 keV band, where an Fe K line is present, towards the northern nucleus. A large-scale, diffuse emission nebula detected in soft X-rays contains a dark lane that spatially coincides with a high surface-brightness tidal tail extending ~50 arcsec (40 kpc) to the south. The soft X-ray source is likely located behind the tidal tail, which absorbs X-ray photons along the line of sight. The estimated column density of cold gas in the tidal tail responsible for shadowing the soft X-rays is N_H ≥ 6 × 10^(21) cm^(-2), consistent with the tidal tail having an edge-on orientation
Morphological Classification of Local Luminous Infrared Galaxies
We present an analysis of the morphological classification of 89 luminous
infrared galaxies (LIRGs) from the Great Observatories All-sky LIRG Survey
(GOALS) sample using non-parametric coefficients and compare their morphology
as a function of wavelength. We rely on images obtained in the optical (B- and
I-band) as well as in the infrared (H-band and 5.8m). Our classification
is based on the calculation of and the second order of light ()
non-parametric coefficients which we explore as a function of stellar mass
(), infrared luminosity () and star formation rate (SFR). We
investigate the relation between , the specific SFR (sSFR) and the dust
temperature () in our galaxy sample. We find that is a
better morphological tracer than , as it allows to distinguish systems
formed by double systems from isolated and post-merger LIRGs. The
multi-wavelength analysis allows us to identify a region in the -
parameter space where ongoing mergers reside, regardless of the band used to
calculate the coefficients. In particular when measured in the H-band, this
region can be used to identify ongoing mergers, with a minimal contamination
from LIRGs in other stages. We also find that while the sSFR is positively
correlated with when measured in the mid-infrared, i.e. star-bursting
galaxies show more compact emission, it is anti-correlated with the B-band
based . We interpret this as the spatial decoupling between obscured
and un-obscured star formation, whereby the ultraviolet/optical size of a LIRGs
experience an intense dust enshrouded central starburst is larger than in the
one in the mid-infrared since the contrast between the nuclear to the extended
disk emission is smaller in the mid-infrared. This has important implications
for high redshift surveys of dusty sources. [abridged]Comment: ( 18 pages, 12 figures, Accepted for publication in A&A

Extracellular free water and glutathione in first-episode psychosis-a multimodal investigation of an inflammatory model for psychosis.
Evidence has been accumulating for an immune-based component to the etiology of psychotic disorders. Advancements in diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) have enabled estimation of extracellular free water (FW), a putative biomarker of neuroinflammation. Furthermore, inflammatory processes may be associated with altered brain levels of metabolites, such as glutathione (GSH). Consequently, we sought to test the hypotheses that FW is increased and associated with decreased GSH in patients with first-episode schizophrenia (SZ) compared with healthy controls (HC). SZ (n = 36) and HC (n = 40) subjects underwent a multi-shell diffusion MRI scan on a Siemens 3T scanner. 1H-MR spectroscopy data were acquired using a GSH-optimized MEGA-PRESS editing sequence and GSH/creatine ratios were calculated for DLPFC (SZ: n = 33, HC: n = 37) and visual cortex (SZ: n = 29, HC: n = 35) voxels. Symptoms and functioning were measured using the SANS, SAPS, BPRS, and GSF/GRF. SZ demonstrated significantly elevated FW in whole-brain gray (p = .001) but not white matter (p = .060). There was no significant difference between groups in GSH in either voxel. However, there was a significant negative correlation between DLPFC GSH and both whole-brain and DLPFC-specific gray matter FW in SZ (r = -.48 and -.47, respectively; both p < .05), while this relationship was nonsignificant in HC and in both groups in the visual cortex. These data illustrate an important relationship between a metabolite known to be important for immune function-GSH-and the diffusion extracellular FW measure, which provides additional support for these measures as neuroinflammatory biomarkers that could potentially provide tractable treatment targets to guide pharmacological intervention
Comparison of soil water sensing methods for irrigation management and research
Presented at the 2007 Central Plains irrigation conference on February 27-28 in Kearney, Nebraska.Includes bibliographical references. As irrigation water resources decrease and deficit irrigation becomes more common across the Great Plains, greater accuracy in irrigation scheduling will be required. With deficit irrigation a smaller amount of soil water is held in reserve and there is less margin for error. Researchers investigating deficit irrigation practices and developing management practices must also have accurate measures of soil water content - in fact, the two go hand in hand. New management practices for deficit irrigation will require more accurate assessments of soil water content if success is to be ensured. This study compared several commercial soil water sensing systems, four of them based on the electromagnetic (EM) properties of soil as influenced by soil water content, versus the venerable neutron moisture meter (NMM), which is based on the slowing of neutrons by soil water. While performance varied widely, the EM sensors were all less precise and less accurate in the field than was the NMM. Variation in water contents from one measurement location to the next was much greater for the EM sensors and was so large that these sensors are not useful for determining the amount of water to apply. The NMM is still the only sensor that is suitable for irrigation research. However, the NMM is not practical for on-farm irrigation management due to cost and regulatory issues. Unfortunately, our studies indicate that the EM sensors are not useful for irrigation management due to inaccuracy and variability. A new generation of EM sensors should be developed to overcome the problems of those currently available. In the meantime, tensiometers, electrical resistance sensors and soil probes may fill the gap for irrigation management based on soil water sensing. However, many farmers are successfully using irrigation scheduling based on crop water use estimates from weather station networks and reference ET calculations. When used in conjunction with direct field soil water observations to avoid over irrigation, the ET network approach has proved useful in maximizing yields
The AKARI 2.5-5 Micron Spectra of Luminous Infrared Galaxies in the Local Universe
We present AKARI 2.5-5um spectra of 145 local luminous infrared galaxies in
the Great Observatories All-sky LIRG Survey. In all of the spectra, we measure
the line fluxes and EQWs of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) at 3.3um
and the hydrogen recombination line Br-alpha, with apertures matched to the
slit sizes of the Spitzer spectrograph and with an aperture covering ~95% of
the total flux in the AKARI 2D spectra. The star formation rates (SFRs) derived
from Br-alpha measured in the latter aperture agree well with SFRs(LIR), when
the dust extinction correction is adopted based on the 9.7um absorption
feature. Together with the Spitzer spectra, we are able to compare the 3.3 and
6.2um PAH features, the two most commonly used near/mid-IR indicators of
starburst (SB) or active galactic nucleus (AGN) dominated galaxies. We find
that the 3.3 and 6.2um PAH EQWs do not follow a linear correlation and at least
1/3 of galaxies classified as AGN-dominated using 3.3um PAH are classified as
starbursts based on 6.2um PAH. These galaxies have a bluer continuum slope than
galaxies that are indicated to be SB-dominated by both PAH features. The bluer
continuum emission suggests that their continuum is dominated by stellar
emission rather than hot dust. We also find that the median Spitzer spectra of
these sources are remarkably similar to the pure SB-dominated sources indicated
by high PAH EQWs in both 3.3 and 6.2um. We propose a revised SB/AGN diagnostic
diagram using 2-5um data. We also use the AKARI and Spitzer spectra to examine
the performance of our new diagnostics and to estimate 3.3um PAH fluxes using
the JWST photometric bands in 0<z<5. Of the known PAH features and mid-IR high
ionization emission lines used as SB/AGN indicators, only the 3.3um PAH feature
is observable with JWST at z>3.5, because the rest of the features at longer
wavelengths fall outside the JWST wavelength coverage.Comment: 13 pages (without appendices), 12 figures, Accepted for publication
