    Models for thin viscous sheets

    Get PDF
Leading-order equations governing the dynamics of a two-dimensional thin viscous sheet are derived. The inclusion of inertia effects is found to result in an ill-posed model when the sheet is compressed, and the resulting paradox is resolved by rescaling the equations over new length- and timescales which depend on the Reynolds number of the flow and the aspect ratio of the sheet. Physically this implies a dominant lengthscale for transverse displacements during viscous buckling. The theory is generalised to give new models for fully three-dimensional sheets

Viking planetary quarantine procedures and implementation

    Get PDF
Some of the techniques and methodology that were used on Viking to implement planetary quarantine requirements are reported. Special attention was given to techniques and approaches used to implement sterilization of the Viking probe. Quarantine procedures for unmanned planetary missions and procedures for microbiological contamination of space hardware are included. A probability of contamination of the biological instruments onboard by terrestrial organisms was examined

Ray tracing program with options for diffraction gratings

    Get PDF
Diffraction theory, developed in vectorial form and coded into ray tracing routines, permits tracing rays of any wavelength through surfaces that are plane, spherical, conical, or aspheric polynomial. Ruled diffraction gratings may run in either X-direction or Y-direction, where Z is optical axis

A 2009 survey of the Australasian clinical medical physics and biomedical engineering workforce

    Get PDF
A survey of the Australasian clinical medical physics and biomedical engineering workforce was carried out in 2009 following on from a similar survey in 2006. 621 positions (equivalent to 575 equivalent full time (EFT) positions) were captured by the survey. Of these 330 EFT were in radiation oncology physics, 45 EFT were in radiology physics, 42 EFT were in nuclear medicine physics, 159 EFT were in biomedical engineering and 29 EFT were attributed to other activities. The survey reviewed the experience profile, the salary levels and the number of vacant positions in the workforce for the different disciplines in each Australian state and in New Zealand. Analysis of the data shows the changes to the workforce over the preceding 3 years and identifies shortfalls in the workforce

Probabilistic risk analysis of flying the space shuttle with and without fuel turbine discharge temperature redline protection

    Get PDF
An exact mathematical model is presented of the Space Shuttle Main Engine computer voting logic in the presence of High Pressure Fuel Turbine (HPFT) overtemperature events and fuel turbine temperature sensor failures. The model provides estimates of the probability of erroneous engine shutdown and the probability of not detecting a HPFT overtemperature event. Because it is believed that the likelihood of sensor failures and overtemperature events in the HPFT greatly overshadows those in the High Pressure Oxygen Turbine (HPOT), this modeling effort focused on the HPFT. However, because the redline protection logic is the same for both turbines, estimation of the model parameters using relevant HPOT data would provide estimates of the risk of erroneous engine shutdown and an undetected overtemperature event in the HPOT. Because of the complexity of the model, it was necessary to program the solution which thus makes it feasible to accommodate a changing data base. This is considered to be of great interest because of the subjective nature in determining the relevancy of certain failures and the fact that the data base is constantly changing as a result of the frequent engine tests
