Angiolipoma of the Posterior Mediastinum with Extension into the Spinal Canal: A Case Report
Angiolipoma is a rare benign soft tissue tumor, an unusual variant of lipoma, consisting of fatty and vascular components and located in the subcutis, usually in the trunk and extremities. We report a case of posterior mediastinal angiolipoma extending into the spinal canal and showing both fat and angiomatous features on CT scan
Spatially valid proprioceptive cues improve the detection of a visual stimulus
Vision and proprioception are the main sensory modalities that convey hand location and direction of movement. Fusion of these sensory signals into a single robust percept is now well documented. However, it is not known whether these modalities also interact in the spatial allocation of attention, which has been demonstrated for other modality pairings. The aim of this study was to test whether proprioceptive signals can spatially cue a visual target to improve its detection. Participants were instructed to use a planar manipulandum in a forward reaching action and determine during this movement whether a near-threshold visual target appeared at either of two lateral positions. The target presentation was followed by a masking stimulus, which made its possible location unambiguous, but not its presence. Proprioceptive cues were given by applying a brief lateral force to the participantâs arm, either in the same direction (validly cued) or in the opposite direction (invalidly cued) to the on-screen location of the mask. The dâČ detection rate of the target increased when the direction of proprioceptive stimulus was compatible with the location of the visual target compared to when it was incompatible. Fundamental limitations for quantum and nano thermodynamics
The relationship between thermodynamics and statistical physics is valid in
the thermodynamic limit - when the number of particles becomes very large.
Here, we study thermodynamics in the opposite regime - at both the nano scale,
and when quantum effects become important. Applying results from quantum
information theory we construct a theory of thermodynamics in these limits. We
derive general criteria for thermodynamical state transformations, and as
special cases, find two free energies: one that quantifies the
deterministically extractable work from a small system in contact with a heat
bath, and the other that quantifies the reverse process. We find that there are
fundamental limitations on work extraction from nonequilibrium states, owing to
finite size effects and quantum coherences. This implies that thermodynamical
transitions are generically irreversible at this scale. As one application of
these methods, we analyse the efficiency of small heat engines and find that
they are irreversible during the adiabatic stages of the cycle.Comment: Final, published versio
Methotrimeprazine-induced Corneal Deposits and Cataract Revealed by Urine Drug Profiling Test
Two schizophrenic patients who had been taking medication for a long period presented with visual disturbance of 6-month duration. Slit-lamp examination revealed fine, discrete, and brownish deposits on the posterior cornea. In addition, bilateral star-shaped anterior subcapsular lens opacities, which were dense, dust-like granular deposits, were noted. Although we strongly suspected that the patient might have taken one of the drugs of the phenothiazine family, we were unable to obtain a history of medications other than haloperidol and risperidone, which were taken for 3 yr. We performed a drug profiling test using urine samples and detected methotrimeprazine. The patient underwent surgery for anterior subcapsular lens opacities. Visual acuity improved in both eyes, but the corneal deposits remained. We report an unusual case of methotrimeprazine-induced corneal deposits and cataract in a patient with psychosis, identified by using the urine drug profiling test
Observation of a Smoothly Tunable Dirac Point in
State-of-the-art topological devices require the use topological surface
states to drive electronic transport. In this study, we examine a tunable
topological system, , for a range of 'x' values
from 0 to 1, using a combination of Fourier Transform Scanning Tunneling
Spectroscopy (FT-STS) and Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy (ARPES).
Our results show that the Dirac point shifts linearly with 'x', crossing the
Fermi energy near x = 0.7. This novel observation of a smoothly tunable,
isolated Dirac point crossing through the topological transport regime and
having strong linear dependence with substitution can be critical for future

A demonstration of 'broken' visual space
It has long been assumed that there is a distorted mapping between real and âperceivedâ space, based on demonstrations of systematic errors in judgements of slant, curvature, direction and separation. Here, we have applied a direct test to the notion of a coherent visual space. In an immersive virtual environment, participants judged the relative distance of two squares displayed in separate intervals. On some trials, the virtual scene expanded by a factor of four between intervals although, in line with recent results, participants did not report any noticeable change in the scene. We found that there was no consistent depth ordering of objects that can explain the distance matches participants made in this environment (e.g. A > B > D yet also A < C < D) and hence no single one-to-one mapping between participantsâ perceived space and any real 3D environment. Instead, factors that affect pairwise comparisons of distances dictate participantsâ performance. These data contradict, more directly than previous experiments, the idea that the visual system builds and uses a coherent 3D internal representation of a scene
