    Concurrent non-ketotic hyperglycinemia and propionic acidemia in an eight year old boy

    This is the first reported case of a patient with both non-ketotic hyperglycinemia and propionic acidemia. At 2 years of age, the patient was diagnosed with non-ketotic hyperglycinemia by elevated glycine levels and mutations in the GLDC gene (paternal allele: c.1576_1577insC delT and c.1580delGinsCAA; p.S527Tfs*13, and maternal allele: c.1819G\u3eA; p.G607S). At 8 years of age after having been placed on ketogenic diet, he became lethargic and had severe metabolic acidosis with ketonuria. Urine organic acid analysis and plasma acylcarnitine profile were consistent with propionic acidemia. He was found to have an apparently homozygous mutation in the PCCB gene: c.49C\u3eA; p.Leu17Met. The patient was also treated with natural protein restriction, carnitine, biotin, and thiamine and had subjective and biochemical improvement

    Picosecond large‐signal switching characteristics of a pseudomorphic AlGaAs/InGaAs modulated doped field effect transistor

    We present the first comprehensive study of the large‐signal switching characteristics of an AlGaAs/InGaAs modulation‐doped field‐effect transistor on a picosecond time scale. Electro‐optic sampling is used to measure drain voltage response to a steplike gate input with a 2.8 ps rise time, at various dc biases. A large‐signal switching time of 6.2 ps is obtained.     Quantum critical points with the Coulomb interaction and the dynamical exponent: when and why z=1

    A general scenario that leads to Coulomb quantum criticality with the dynamical critical exponent z=1 is proposed. I point out that the long-range Coulomb interaction and quenched disorder have competing effects on z, and that the balance between the two may lead to charged quantum critical points at which z=1 exactly. This is illustrated with the calculation for the Josephson junction array Hamiltonian in dimensions D=3-\epsilon. Precisely in D=3, however, the above simple result breaks down, and z>1.     TNO at TRECVID 2013 : multimedia event detection and instance search

    We describe the TNO system and the evaluation results for TRECVID 2013 Multimedia Event Detection (MED) and instance search (INS) tasks. The MED system consists of a bag-of-word (BOW) approach with spatial tiling that uses low-level static and dynamic visual features, an audio feature and high-level concepts. Automatic speech recognition (ASR) and optical character recognition (OCR) are not used in the system. In the MED case with 100 example training videos, support-vector machines (SVM) are trained and fused to detect an event in the test set. In the case with 0 example videos, positive and negative concepts are extracted as keywords from the textual event description and events are detected with the high-level concepts. The MED results show that the SIFT keypoint descriptor is the one which contributes best to the results, fusion of multiple low-level features helps to improve the performance, and the textual event-description chain currently performs poorly. The TNO INS system presents a baseline open-source approach using standard SIFT keypoint detection and exhaustive matching. In order to speed up search times for queries a basic map-reduce scheme is presented to be used on a multi-node cluster. Our INS results show above-median results with acceptable search times.This research for the MED submission was performed in the GOOSE project, which is jointly funded by the enabling technology program Adaptive Multi Sensor Networks (AMSN) and the MIST research program of the Dutch Ministry of Defense.     Opening up the participation laboratory: the co-creation of publics and futures in upstream participation.

    How to embed reflexivity in public participation in techno-science and to open it up to the agency of publics are key concerns in current debates. There is a risk that engagements become limited to “laboratory experiments,” highly controlled and foreclosed by participation experts, particularly in upstream techno-sciences. In this paper, we propose a way to open up the “participation laboratory” by engaging localized, self-assembling publics in ways that respect and mobilize their ecologies of participation. Our innovative reflexive methodology introduced participatory methods to public engagement with upstream techno-science, with the public contributing to both the content and format of the project. Reflecting on the project, we draw attention to the largely overlooked issue of temporalities of participation, and the co-production of futures and publics in participation methodologies. We argue that many public participation methodologies are underpinned by the open futures model, which imagines the future as a space of unrestrained creativity. We contrast that model with the lived futures model typical of localized publics, which respects latency of materials and processes but imposes limits on creativity. We argue that to continue being societally relevant and scientifically important, public participation methods should reconcile the open future of research with the lived futures of localized publics
