    Adaptive link annotation is one of the most well-known adaptive navigation support technologies that aims to guide hypermedia users to the most relevant information by personalizing the appearance of hyperlinks. Past work assumed no difference between different interface implementations of personalization approaches that are conceptually the same. The goal of the current study was to determine whether the choice of visual cues does matter by conducting a user study with several alternative designs for link annotation in interactive code examples

    Knowledgezoom for java: A concept-based exam study tool with a zoomable open student model

    This paper presents our attempt to develop a personalized exam preparation tool for Java/OOP classes based on a fine-grained concept model of Java knowledge. Our goal was to explore two most popular student model-based approaches: open student modeling and problem sequencing. The result of our work is a Java exam preparation tool, Knowledge Zoom. The tool combines an open concept-level student model component, Knowledge Explorer and a concept-based sequencing component, Knowledge Maximizer into a single interface. This paper presents both components of Knowledge Zoom, reports results of its evaluation, and discusses lessons learned. © 2013 IEEE

    The Making of Cloud Applications An Empirical Study on Software Development for the Cloud

    Cloud computing is gaining more and more traction as a deployment and provisioning model for software. While a large body of research already covers how to optimally operate a cloud system, we still lack insights into how professional software engineers actually use clouds, and how the cloud impacts development practices. This paper reports on the first systematic study on how software developers build applications in the cloud. We conducted a mixed-method study, consisting of qualitative interviews of 25 professional developers and a quantitative survey with 294 responses. Our results show that adopting the cloud has a profound impact throughout the software development process, as well as on how developers utilize tools and data in their daily work. Among other things, we found that (1) developers need better means to anticipate runtime problems and rigorously define metrics for improved fault localization and (2) the cloud offers an abundance of operational data, however, developers still often rely on their experience and intuition rather than utilizing metrics. From our findings, we extracted a set of guidelines for cloud development and identified challenges for researchers and tool vendors

    Off the beaten path: The impact of adaptive content sequencing on student navigation in an open social student modeling interface

    One of the original goals of intelligent educational systems is to guide every student to the most appropriate educational content. Exploring both knowledge-based and social guidance approaches in past work, we learned that each of these approaches has weak sides. In this paper we follow the idea of combining social guidance with more traditional knowledge-based guidance to support more optimal content navigation. We proposed a greedy sequencing approach that maximizes student’s level of knowledge and tested it in a classroom. Results indicated that this approach positively impacts students’ navigation

    Graph analysis of student model networks

    This paper explores the feasibility of a graph-based approach to model student knowledge in the domain of programming. The key idea of this approach is that programming concepts are truly learned not in isolation, but rather in combination with other concepts. Following this idea, we represent a student model as a graph where links are gradually added when the student's ability to work with connected pairs of concepts in the same context is confirmed. We also hypothesize that with this graph-based approach a number of traditional graph metrics could be used to better measure student knowledge than using more traditional scalar models of student knowledge. To collect some early evidence in favor of this idea, we used data from several classroom studies to correlate graph metrics with various performance and motivation metrics

    In our journey exploring the effects of Open Student Model (OSM) on students working with programming problems and examples, we have incorporated the idea of social visualizations to extend OSM to Open Social Student Modeling (OSSM). Although comparison features in OSSM, where a student can compare herself to the group or individual peers, have shown to increase students' work, we now shift our attention to other effects. The goal is to explore the OSSM effects beyond comparison, particularly metacognitive support, and we propose a representation of the OSSM towards these lines

    Modified Dolphin Monitoring Operator for Weight Optimization of Frame Structures

    In this article, a modified dolphin monitoring (MDM) operatoris introduced and used to improve the performance of the collidingbodies optimization (CBO) algorithm for optimal designof steel structures (CBO-MDM). The performance of the CBO,enhanced colliding bodies optimization (ECBO) and CBOMDMare compared through three well-established structuralbenchmarks. The optimized designs obtained by thesealgorithms are compared, and the results show that the performanceof CBO-MDM is superior to those of the other twoalgorithms. The MDM is found to be a suitable tool to enhancethe performance of the CBO algorithm

    How leadership affects organisational citizenship behaviour – a study of independent hotels

    Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine the factors that managers in independent hotels can influence to improve organisational citizenship behaviour (OCB) by examining the relationship between leadership style and OCB through newly developed balanced organisational culture and trust variables. Unlike most studies, which have been on chain hotels, this study investigates these relationships in independent hotels in Iran. Additionally, organisational size was also included in the study. Design/methodology/approach: Using information from Ministry of Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism 160 independent hotels were identified and approached. A survey was assembled using well-known instruments. 392 usable questionnaires, out of 1150 distributed, were collected from employees and analysed using SEM. Findings: Contrary to previous studies, we found that in this context neither transformational nor transactional leadership affects trust directly but only through balanced organisational culture and only transactional leadership had a direct relationship with OCB. Also, organisational size had a moderating effect on the relationship between trust and OCB. Originality/value: We add to the theoretical literature dealing with the different behaviour of constructs developed in a Western context in other contexts and suggests that hotel managers in a collectivist culture, like Iran, who want to build OCB can do so by creating organisational culture conditions (Balanced Organisational Culture) that foster trust between managers and their subordinates
