Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women. Multicentric gliomas are uncommon lesions of the central nervous system (CNS) with an unprecise rate of occurrence that diffusely infiltrate large portions of the brain. High grade astrocytoma is the most agressive form of gliomas and often has a distinct neuroimaging pattern with a poor prognosis. We report a case of a 29-year-old woman patient with primary breast carcinoma and high grade astrocytoma subsequently developed. The woman was treated by mastectomy and 20 months post-diagnosis of the cancer she exhibited a transient facial paralysis. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed two cranial masses suspicious of metastasis. A complete tumor removal from the brain was performed. On histological examination, this tumor was a high grade astrocytoma

The 2019 novel-coronavirus (COVID-19) has affected 181 countries with approximately 1197405 confirmed cases (by 5th April). Understanding the transmission dynamics of the infection in each country which got affected on a daily basis and evaluating the effectiveness of control policies are critical for our further actions. To date, the statistics of COVID-19 reported cases show that more than 80 of infected are mild cases of disease, around 14 of infected have severe complications, and about 5 are categorized as critical disease victims. Today's report (5th April 2020; daily updates in the prepared website) shows that the confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the United States, Spain, Italy, and Germany are 308850, 126168, 124632, and 96092, respectively. Calculating the total case fatality rate (CFR) of Italy (4th April 2020), about 13.3 of confirmed cases have passed away. Compared with South Korea's rate of 1.8 (seven times lower than Italy) and China's 4 (69 lower than Italy), the CFR of Italy is too high. Some effective policies that yielded significant changes in the trend of cases were the lockdown policy in China, Italy, and Spain (the effect observed after some days), the shutdown of all nonessential companies in Hubei (the effect observed after 5 days), combined policy in South Korea, and reducing working hours in Iran. © 2020 Wiley Periodicals, Inc

Mesenchymal Stem Cells Pretreatment With Stromal-Derived Factor-1 Alpha Augments Cardiac Function and Angiogenesis in Infarcted Myocardium

Background: Stem cell therapy is among the novel approaches for the treatment of post-myocardial infarction cardiomyopathy. This study aims to compare the effect of stromal-derived factor 1 α (SDF1α), mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in combination with the lentiviral production of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) on infarct area, vascularization and eventually cardiac function in a rat model of myocardial infarction (MI). Methods: The influence of SDf1α on MSCs survival was investigated. MSCs were transduced via a lentiviral vector containing VEGF. After that, the effect of mesenchymal stem cell transfection of VEGF-A165 and SDf1α preconditioning on cardiac function and scar size was investigated in five groups of MI rat models. The MSC survival, cardiac function, scar size, angiogenesis, and lymphocyte count were assessed 72 hours and 6 weeks after cell transplantation. Results: SDF1α decreased the lactate dehydrogenase release in MSCs significantly. Also, the number of viable cells in the SDF1α-pretreated group was meaningfully more than the control. The left ventricular systolic function significantly enhanced in groups with p240MSC, SDF1αMSC, and VEGF-A165MSC in comparison to the control group. Conclusions: These findings suggest that SDF1α pretreatment and overexpressing VEGF in MSCs could augment the MSCs' survival in the infarcted myocardium, reduce the scar size, and improve the cardiac systolic function. © 2021 Southern Society for Clinical Investigatio
