A (1+1)-Dimensional Reduced Model of Mesons

We propose an extension of 't Hooft's large-NcN_c light-front QCD in two dimensions to include helicity and physical gluon degrees of freedom, modelled on a classical dimensional reduction of four dimensional QCD. A non-perturbative renormalisation of the infinite set of coupled integral equations describing boundstates is performed. These equations are then solved, both analytically in a phase space wavefunction approximation and numerically by discretising momenta, for (hybrid) meson masses and (polarized) parton structure functions.Comment: LaTex 13 pages; 2 figures, uuencoded file (PostScript

Update: Accurate Determinations of alpha_s from Realistic Lattice QCD

We use lattice QCD simulations, with MILC configurations (including vacuum polarization from u, d, and s quarks), to update our previous determinations of the QCD coupling constant. Our new analysis uses results from 6 different lattice spacings and 12 different combinations of sea-quark masses to significantly reduce our previous errors. We also correct for finite-lattice-spacing errors in the scale setting, and for nonperturbative chiral corrections to the 22 short-distance quantities from which we extract the coupling. Our final result is alpha_V(7.5GeV,nf=3) = 0.2120(28), which is equivalent to alpha_msbar(M_Z,n_f=5)= 0.1183(8). We compare this with our previous result, which differs by one standard deviation.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures, 4 table

Glueballs from 1+1 Dimensional Gauge Theories with Transverse Degrees of Freedom

    Get PDF
We study 1+11+1-dimensional SU(N)SU(N) gauge theories with adjoint scalar matter representations, based on a dimensional truncation of 2+12+1 and 3+13+1-dimensional pure QCD, which approximate the dynamics of transversely polarized gluons. The glueballs are investigated non-perturbatively using light-front quantisation, detailed spectra and wavefunctions being obtained for the large-NN limit. In general there is some qualitative agreement of the spectra with lattice Monte Carlo data from the higher dimensional QCD. From the light-front wavefunctions we calculate (polarized) structure functions and interpret the gluon and spin content of glueballs. We discuss the phase structure of the reduced theories in relation to matrix models for relativistic non-critical strings.Comment: To appear in Nucl. Phys. Path Integral Approach to Two-Dimensional QCD in the Light-Front

Two-dimensional quantum cromodynamics in the light-front frame is studied following hamiltonian methods. The theory is quantized using the path integral formalism and an effective theory similar to the Nambu-Jona Lasinio model is obtained. Confinement in two dimensions is derived analyzing directly the constraints in the path integral.Comment: 13pp, Plain-TeX, Si-93-10, IF-UFRJ-93-13, USM-TH-6

High-Precision c and b Masses, and QCD Coupling from Current-Current Correlators in Lattice and Continuum QCD

We extend our earlier lattice-QCD analysis of heavy-quark correlators to smaller lattice spacings and larger masses to obtain new values for the c mass and QCD coupling, and, for the first time, values for the b mass: m_c(3GeV,n_f=4)=0.986(6)GeV, alpha_msb(M_Z,n_f=5)=0.1183(7), and m_b(10GeV,n_f=5)=3.617(25)GeV. These are among the most accurate determinations by any method. We check our results using a nonperturbative determination of the mass ratio m_b(mu,n_f)/m_c(mu,n_f); the two methods agree to within our 1% errors and taken together imply m_b/m_c=4.51(4). We also update our previous analysis of alpha_msb from Wilson loops to account for revised values for r_1 and r_1/a, finding a new value alpha_\msb(M_Z,n_f=5)=0.1184(6); and we update our recent values for light-quark masses from the ratio m_c/m_s. Finally, in the Appendix, we derive a procedure for simplifying and accelerating complicated least-squares fits.Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures, 3 table

    One-loop renormalization of heavy-light currents

    Get PDF
We calculate the mass dependent renormalization factors of heavy-light bilinears at one-loop order of perturbation theory, when the heavy quark is treated with the Fermilab formalism. We present numerical results for the Wilson and Sheikholeslami-Wohlert actions, with and without tree-level rotation. We find that in both cases our results smoothly interpolate from the static limit to the massless limit. We also calculate the mass dependent Brodsky-Lepage-Mackenzie scale q∗q^*, with and without tadpole-improvement.Comment: Lattice2001(improvement), 3 pages, 4 figure

The Influence of Higher Fock States in Light-Cone Gauge Theories

    Get PDF
In the light-cone Fock state expansion of gauge theories, the influence of non-valence states may be significant in precision non-perturbative calculations. In two-dimensional gauge theories, it is shown how these states modify the behaviour of the light-cone wavefunction in significant ways relative to endemic choices of variational ansatz. Similar effects in four-dimensional gauge theories are briefly discussed.Comment: 4 pages, REVTE

A New Basis Function Approach to 't Hooft-Bergknoff-Eller Equations

    Get PDF
We analytically and numerically investigate the 't Hooft-Bergknoff-Eller equations, the lowest order mesonic Light-Front Tamm-Dancoff equations for U(N_C) and SU(N_C) gauge theories. We find the wavefunction can be well approximated by new basis functions and obtain an analytic formula for the mass of the lightest bound state. Its value is consistent with the precedent results.Comment: 16 pages, 3 figure

    Tube Model for Light-Front QCD

    Get PDF
We propose the tube model as a first step in solving the bound state problem in light-front QCD. In this approach we neglect transverse variations of the fields, producing a model with 1+1 dimensional dynamics. We then solve the two, three, and four particle sectors of the model for the case of pure glue SU(3). We study convergence to the continuum limit and various properties of the spectrum.Comment: 29 page

The Role of Zero-Modes in the Canonical Quantization of Heavy-Fermion QED in Light-Cone Coordinates

Four-dimensional heavy-fermion QED is studied in light-cone coordinates with (anti-)periodic field boundary conditions. We carry out a consistent light-cone canonical quantization of this model using the Dirac algorithm for a system with first- and second-class constraints. To examine the role of the zero modes, we consider the quantization procedure in {the }zero-mode {and the non-zero-mode} sectors separately. In both sectors we obtain the physical variables and their canonical commutation relations. The physical Hamiltonian is constructed via a step-by-step exclusion of the unphysical degrees of freedom. An example using this Hamiltonian in which the zero modes play a role is the verification of the correct Coulomb potential between two heavy fermions.Comment: 22 pages, CWRUTH-93-5 (Latex
