Amplified Sensitivity of Nitrogen-Vacancy Spins in Nanodiamonds using All-Optical Charge Readout
Nanodiamonds containing nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers offer a versatile
platform for sensing applications spanning from nanomagnetism to in-vivo
monitoring of cellular processes. In many cases, however, weak optical signals
and poor contrast demand long acquisition times that prevent the measurement of
environmental dynamics. Here, we demonstrate the ability to perform fast,
high-contrast optical measurements of charge distributions in ensembles of NV
centers in nanodiamonds and use the technique to improve the spin readout
signal-to-noise ratio through spin-to-charge conversion. A study of 38
nanodiamonds, each hosting 10-15 NV centers with an average diameter of 40 nm,
uncovers complex, multiple-timescale dynamics due to radiative and
non-radiative ionization and recombination processes. Nonetheless, the
nanodiamonds universally exhibit charge-dependent photoluminescence contrasts
and the potential for enhanced spin readout using spin-to-charge conversion. We
use the technique to speed up a relaxometry measurement by a factor of

Optical Signatures of Quantum Emitters in Suspended Hexagonal Boron Nitride
Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) is a tantalizing material for solid-state
quantum engineering. Analogously to three-dimensional wide-bandgap
semiconductors like diamond, h-BN hosts isolated defects exhibiting visible
fluorescence, and the ability to position such quantum emitters within a
two-dimensional material promises breakthrough advances in quantum sensing,
photonics, and other quantum technologies. Critical to such applications,
however, is an understanding of the physics underlying h-BN's quantum emission.
We report the creation and characterization of visible single-photon sources in
suspended, single-crystal, h-BN films. The emitters are bright and stable over
timescales of several months in ambient conditions. With substrate interactions
eliminated, we study the spectral, temporal, and spatial characteristics of the
defects' optical emission, which offer several clues about their electronic and
chemical structure. Analysis of the defects' spectra reveals similarities in
vibronic coupling despite widely-varying fluorescence wavelengths, and a
statistical analysis of their polarized emission patterns indicates a
correlation between the optical dipole orientations of some defects and the
primitive crystallographic axes of the single-crystal h-BN film. These
measurements constrain possible defect models, and, moreover, suggest that
several classes of emitters can exist simultaneously in free-standing h-BN,
whether they be different defects, different charge states of the same defect,
or the result of strong local perturbations
Infra-Red Thermal Measurement on a Low Power Infra-Red Emitter in CMOS Technology

technology, using IR thermal microscopy. The performance and reliability of the thermal source is highly dependent on the
operating temperature and temperature uniformity across the micro-heater which is embedded within the silicon dioxide
membrane. To date, the accuracy of the IR measurement has been limited by the optical transparency of the semiconductor
material forming the membrane, which has poor emissivity compared to a black-body source. In this paper, a high emissivity
micro-particle sensor is used improve the accuracy of the temperature measurements. IR measurements on the emitter chip
were validated with reference to temperature measurements made using an electrical technique where good temperature
uniformity across the membrane heater was found
Clinical and neural correlates of alexithymia in posttraumatic stress disorder.
Individuals with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) often exhibit deficits in emotional experience and expression, which suggests that certain individuals with PTSD may be alexithymic. In this study, in a sample of 105 individuals with PTSD, clinical correlates of alexithymia included reexperiencing, hyperarousal, numbing, dissociative symptoms, and retrospectively reported experiences of childhood emotional neglect. In a subsample of 26 individuals with PTSD related to a motor vehicle accident, functional neural responses to trauma-script imagery were associated with severity of alexithymia, including increased right posterior-insula and ventral posterior-cingulate activation and decreased bilateral ventral anterior-cingulate, ventromedial prefrontal, anterior-insula, and right inferior frontal cortex activation. Clinical and theoretical implications and future research directions are discussed
Two-Center Review of Posterior Vault Expansion following a Staged or Expectant Treatment of Crouzon and Apert Craniosynostosis
Background: The timing of posterior cranial expansion for the management of intracranial pressure can be "staged" by age and dysmorphology or "expectant" by pressure monitoring. The authors report shared outcome measures from one center performing posterior vault remodeling (PCVR) or distraction (PVDO) following a staged approach and another performing spring-assisted expansion (SAPVE) following an expectant protocol. Methods: Apert or Crouzon syndrome patients who underwent posterior expansion younger than 2 years were included. Perioperative outcomes and subsequent cranial operations were recorded up to last follow-up and intracranial volume changes measured and adjusted using growth curves. Results: Thirty-eight patients were included. Following the expectant protocol, Apert patients underwent SAPVE at a younger age (8 months) than Crouzon patients (16 months). The initial surgery time was shorter but total operative time, including device removal, was longer for PVDO (3 hours 52 minutes) and SAPVE (4 hours 34 minutes) than for PCVR (3 hours 24 minutes). Growth-adjusted volume increase was significant and comparable. Fourteen percent of PCVR, 33% of PVDO, and 11% of SAPVE cases had complications, but without long-term deficits. Following the staged approach, 5% underwent only PVDO, 85% had a staged posterior followed by anterior surgery, and 10% required a third expansion. Following the expectant approach, 42% of patients had only posterior expansion at last follow-up, 32% had a secondary cranial surgery, and 26% had a third cranial expansion. Conclusion: Two approaches involving posterior vault expansion in young syndromic patients using three techniques resulted in comparable early volume expansion and complication profiles. A dynamic network analysis of emergent grammar
For languages to survive as complex cultural systems, they need to be learnable. According to traditional approaches, learning is made possible by constraining the degrees of freedom in advance of experience and by the construction of complex structure during development. This article explores a third contributor to complexity: namely, the extent to which syntactic structure can be an emergent property of how simpler entities – words – interact with one another. The authors found that when naturalistic child directed speech was instantiated in a dynamic network, communities formed around words that were more densely connected with other words than they were with the rest of the network. This process is designed to mirror what we know about distributional patterns in natural language: namely, the network communities represented the syntactic hubs of semi-formulaic slot-and-frame patterns, characteristic of early speech. The network itself was blind to grammatical information and its organization reflected (a) the frequency of using a word and (b) the probabilities of transitioning from one word to another. The authors show that grammatical patterns in the input disassociate by community structure in the emergent network. These communities provide coherent hubs which could be a reliable source of syntactic information for the learner. These initial findings are presented here as proof-of-concept in the hope that other researchers will explore the possibilities and limitations of this approach on a larger scale and with more languages. The implications of a dynamic network approach are discussed for the learnability burden and the development of an adult-like grammar
