VAMPIR: Visualization and Analysis of MPI Resources
Performance analysis most often is based on the detailed knowledge of program behavior. One option to get this information is tracing. Based on the research tool PARvis, the visualization environment VAMPIR was developed at KFA which now supports the new message passing standard MPI. VAMPIR translates a given trace file into a variety of graphical views, e.g., state diagrams, activity charts, time-line
displays, and statistics. Moreover, it supports an animation mode that can help to locate performance bottlenecks, and it provides flexible filter operations to reduce the amount of information displayed. The most interesting part of VAMPIR is the powerful zooming feature that allows to identify problems at any level of detail
Automating the application data placement in hybrid memory systems
Multi-tiered memory systems, such as those based on Intel® Xeon Phi™processors, are equipped with several memory tiers with different characteristics including, among others, capacity, access latency, bandwidth, energy consumption, and volatility. The proper distribution of the application data objects into the available memory layers is key to shorten the time– to–solution, but the way developers and end-users determine the most appropriate memory tier to place the application data objects has not been properly addressed to date.In this paper we present a novel methodology to build an extensible framework to automatically identify and place the application’s most relevant memory objects into the Intel Xeon Phi fast on-package memory. Our proposal works on top of inproduction binaries by first exploring the application behavior and then substituting the dynamic memory allocations. This makes this proposal valuable even for end-users who do not have the possibility of modifying the application source code. We demonstrate the value of a framework based in our methodology for several relevant HPC applications using different allocation strategies to help end-users improve performance with minimal intervention. The results of our evaluation reveal that our proposal is able to identify the key objects to be promoted into fast on-package memory in order to optimize performance, leading to even surpassing hardware-based solutions. This work has been performed in the Intel-BSC Exascale Lab. HPC for Urgent Decision-Making
Emerging use cases from incident response planning and broad-scope European initiatives (e.g. Destination Earth [1,2], European Green Deal and Digital Package [21]) are expected to require federated, distributed infrastructures combining computing and data platforms. These will provide elasticity enabling users to build applications and integrate data for thematic specialisation and decision support, within ever shortening response time windows.
For prompt and, in particular, for urgent decision support, the conventional usage modes of HPC centres is not adequate: these rely on relatively long-term arrangements for time-scheduled exclusive use of HPC resources, and enforce well- established yet time-consuming policies for granting access. In urgent decision support scenarios, managers or members of incident response teams must initiate processing and control the resources required based on their real-time judgement on how a complex situation evolves over time. This circle of clients is distinct from the regular users of HPC centres, and they must interact with HPC workflows on-demand and in real-time, while engaging significant HPC and data processing resources in or across HPC centres.
This white paper considers the technical implications of supporting urgent decisions through establishing flexible usage modes for computing, analytics and AI/ML-based applications using HPC and large, dynamic assets.
The target decision support use cases will involve ensembles of jobs, data-staging to support workflows, and interactions with services/facilities external to HPC systems/centres. Our analysis identifies the need for flexible and interactive access to HPC resources, particularly in the context of dynamic workflows processing large datasets. This poses several technical and organisational challenges: short-notice secure access to HPC and data resources, dynamic resource allocation and scheduling, coordination of resource managers, support for data-intensive workflow (including data staging on node-local storage), preemption of already running workloads and interactive steering of simulations. Federation of services and resources across multiple sites will help to increase availability, provide elasticity for time-varying resource needs and enable leverage of data locality
A UNICORE Globus Interoperability Layer
For several years, UNICORE and Globus have co-existed as approaches to exploiting what has become known as the ``Grid''. Both offer many services beneficial for creating and using production Grids. A cooperative approach, providing interoperability between Globus and UNICORE, would result in an advanced set of Grid services that gain strength from each other. This paper outlines some of these parallels and differences as they relate to the development of an interoperability layer between UNICORE and Globus. Given the increasing ubiquity of Globus, what emerges is the desire for a hybridised facility that utilises the UNICORE work-flow management of complex, multi-site tasks, but that can run on either UNICORE- or Globus-enabled resources. The technical challenge in achieving this, addressed in this paper, consists of mapping resource descriptions from both grid environments to an abstract format appropriate to work-flow preparation, and then the instantiation of work-flow tasks on the target systems. Other issues such as reconciling disparate security models and file transfer support are also addressed
Integrating memory perspective into the BSC performance tools
The growing gap between processor and memory speeds results in complex memory hierarchies as processors evolve to mitigate such differences by taking advantage of locality of reference. In this direction, the BSC performance analysis tools have been recently extended to provide insight relative the application memory accesses depicting their temporal and spatial characteristics, correlating with the source-code and the achieved performance simultaneously. These extensions rely on the Precise Event-Based Sampling (PEBS) mechanism available in recent Intel processors to capture information relative to the application memory accesses. The sampled information is processed with the Folding mechanism to provide a detailed temporal evolution of the memory accesses and in conjunction with the achieved performance and the source-code counterpart. The results obtained from the combination of these tools help application developers to understand better how the application behaves and how the system performs. We demonstrate the value of the complete work-flow by exploring an already optimized state-of-the-art benchmark, providing detailed insight of their memory access behavior. This work has been performed in the Intel-BSC Exascale Lab. Impure Public Goods and Technological Interdependencies
Impure public goods represent an important group of goods. Almost every public good exerts not only effects which are public to all but also effects which are private to the producer of this good. What is often omitted in the analysis of impure public goods is the fact that – regularly – these private effects can also be generated independently of the public good. In our analysis we focus on the effects alternative technologies – independently generating the private effects of the public good – may have on the provision of impure public goods. After the investigation in an analytical impure public good model, we numerically simulate the effects of alternative technologies in a parameterized model for climate policy in Germany
