The Place of Crossbred Lambs in Australian Lamb Production
The Australian sheep industry, particularly the lamb meat sector has undergone a major change in focus, such that consumer requirements are a paramount determinant for production and processing developments. This change has been facilitated by the use of cross breeding production systems where the benefits of heterosis are captured and the implementation of a performance recording system amongst initially, breeders of terminal sires. This sector of the industry has strongly embraced genetic selection using objectively measured traits and this is one of the contributors to the superior growth rate of crossbred progeny over pure bred progeny. A crossbreeding system does present challenges as it can also lead to fatter carcases depending on slaughter weight targets and thus less lean or saleable meat. This means that appropriate sire selection is mandatory. Which ever region of the world is under consideration; crossbreeding for meat production will return benefits and these will be further strengthened if the processing sector also adopts technology to enhance eating quality such as electrical stimulation and ageing
An association between pulmonary Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare complex infections and biomarkers of Th2-type inflammation
Background: The rising incidence of pulmonary Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare complex (MAI) infection is unexplained but parallels the growing world-wide epidemic of allergic disease. We hypothesized an association between pulmonary MAI infection and Th2-type immune responses as seen in allergy. / Methods: Biomarkers of patient Th2-type immune responses (peripheral blood eosinophil counts and serum IgE levels) were compared between patients with positive pulmonary samples for tuberculosis and non-tuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) infection. A further comparison of clinical characteristics, including respiratory co-morbidities, and biomarkers, was conducted between patients culturing MAI NTM and those culturing NTM other than MAI. / Results: Patients culturing NTM from pulmonary samples had significantly higher peripheral blood eosinophil levels than those culturing Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Furthermore, patients culturing MAI compared to those culturing NTM other than MAI had higher eosinophil counts (mean 0.29x109/L vs 0.15x109/L, p=0.010) and IgE levels (geometric mean 138kU/L vs 47kU/L, p=0.021). However there was no significant difference in the frequency of asthma between the two NTM groups. / Conclusions: There is an association between biomarkers of Th2-type immune responses and pulmonary MAI. Prospective and translational research could identify the direction of causation; and so determine whether our finding may be utilized within future management strategies for MAI
Repetitive Segmental Structure of the Transducin β Subunit: Homology with the CDC4 Gene and Identification of Related mRNAs
Retinal transducin, a guanine nucleotide regulatory protein (referred to as a G protein) that activates a cGMP phosphodiesterase in photoreceptor cells, is comprised of three subunits. We have identified and analyzed cDNA clones of the bovine transducin β subunit that may be highly conserved or identical to that in other G proteins. From the cDNA nucleotide sequence of the entire coding region, the primary structure of a 340-amino acid protein was deduced. The encoded β subunit has a Mr of 37,375 and is comprised of repetitive homologous segments arranged in tandem. Furthermore, significant homology in primary structure and segmental sequence exists between the β subunit and the yeast CDC4 gene product. The Mr 37,375 β subunit polypeptide is encoded by a 2.9-kilobase (kb) mRNA. However, there exists in retina other β-related mRNAs that are divergent from the 2.9-kb mRNA on the basis of oligonucleotide and primer-extended probe hybridizations. All mammalian tissues and clonal cell lines that have been examined contain at least two β-related mRNAs, usually 1.8 and 2.9 kb in length. These results suggest that the mRNAs are the processed products of a small number of closely related genes or of a single highly complex β gene
Inherent Rheology of a Granular Fluid in Uniform Shear Flow
In contrast to normal fluids, a granular fluid under shear supports a steady
state with uniform temperature and density since the collisional cooling can
compensate locally for viscous heating. It is shown that the hydrodynamic
description of this steady state is inherently non-Newtonian. As a consequence,
the Newtonian shear viscosity cannot be determined from experiments or
simulation of uniform shear flow. For a given degree of inelasticity, the
complete nonlinear dependence of the shear viscosity on the shear rate requires
the analysis of the unsteady hydrodynamic behavior. The relationship to the
Chapman-Enskog method to derive hydrodynamics is clarified using an approximate

Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA): growing up in a bad neighbourhood - how do low-mass galaxies become passive?
Both theoretical predictions and observations of the very nearby Universe
suggest that low-mass galaxies (log[M/M]<9.5) are likely
to remain star-forming unless they are affected by their local environment. To
test this premise, we compare and contrast the local environment of both
passive and star-forming galaxies as a function of stellar mass, using the
Galaxy and Mass Assembly survey. We find that passive fractions are higher in
both interacting pair and group galaxies than the field at all stellar masses,
and that this effect is most apparent in the lowest mass galaxies. We also find
that essentially all passive log[M/M]<8.5 galaxies are
found in pair/group environments, suggesting that local interactions with a
more massive neighbour cause them to cease forming new stars. We find that the
effects of immediate environment (local galaxy-galaxy interactions) in forming
passive systems increases with decreasing stellar mass, and highlight that this
is potentially due to increasing interaction timescales giving sufficient time
for the galaxy to become passive via starvation. We then present a simplistic
model to test this premise, and show that given our speculative assumptions, it

Inelastic Collapse of Three Particles
A system of three particles undergoing inelastic collisions in arbitrary
spatial dimensions is studied with the aim of establishing the domain of
``inelastic collapse''---an infinite number of collisions which take place in a
finite time. Analytic and simulation results show that for a sufficiently small
restitution coefficient, , collapse can
occur. In one dimension, such a collapse is stable against small perturbations
within this entire range. In higher dimensions, the collapse can be stable
against small variations of initial conditions, within a smaller range,

The SAMI Galaxy Survey: Stellar population radial gradients in early-type galaxies
We study the internal radial gradients of the stellar populations in a sample
comprising 522 early-type galaxies (ETGs) from the SAMI (Sydney- AAO
Multi-object Integral field spectrograph) Galaxy Survey. We stack the spectra
of individual spaxels in radial bins, and derive basic stellar population
properties: total metallicity ([Z/H]), [Mg/Fe], [C/Fe] and age. The radial
gradient () and central value of the fits (evaluated at R/4) are
compared against a set of six possible drivers of the trends. We find that
velocity dispersion () - or, equivalently gravitational potential - is
the dominant driver of the chemical composition gradients. Surface mass density
is also correlated with the trends, especially with stellar age. The decrease
of [Mg/Fe] with increasing is contrasted by a rather shallow
dependence of [Z/H] with (although this radial gradient is
overall rather steep). This result, along with a shallow age slope at the
massive end, imposes stringent constraints on the progenitors of the
populations that contribute to the formation of the outer envelopes of ETGs.
The SAMI sample is split between a 'field' sample and a cluster sample. Only
weak environment-related differences are found, most notably a stronger
dependence of central total metallicity ([Z/H]) with , along
with a marginal trend of [Z/H] to steepen in cluster galaxies, a result
that is not followed by [Mg/Fe]. The results presented here serve as

Radio Galaxy Zoo: Knowledge Transfer Using Rotationally Invariant Self-Organising Maps
With the advent of large scale surveys the manual analysis and classification
of individual radio source morphologies is rendered impossible as existing
approaches do not scale. The analysis of complex morphological features in the
spatial domain is a particularly important task. Here we discuss the challenges
of transferring crowdsourced labels obtained from the Radio Galaxy Zoo project
and introduce a proper transfer mechanism via quantile random forest
regression. By using parallelized rotation and flipping invariant Kohonen-maps,
image cubes of Radio Galaxy Zoo selected galaxies formed from the FIRST radio
continuum and WISE infrared all sky surveys are first projected down to a
two-dimensional embedding in an unsupervised way. This embedding can be seen as
a discretised space of shapes with the coordinates reflecting morphological
features as expressed by the automatically derived prototypes. We find that
these prototypes have reconstructed physically meaningful processes across two
channel images at radio and infrared wavelengths in an unsupervised manner. In
the second step, images are compared with those prototypes to create a
heat-map, which is the morphological fingerprint of each object and the basis
for transferring the user generated labels. These heat-maps have reduced the
feature space by a factor of 248 and are able to be used as the basis for
subsequent ML methods. Using an ensemble of decision trees we achieve upwards
of 85.7% and 80.7% accuracy when predicting the number of components and peaks
in an image, respectively, using these heat-maps. We also question the
currently used discrete classification schema and introduce a continuous scale
that better reflects the uncertainty in transition between two classes, caused
by sensitivity and resolution limits
The Phoenix Deep Survey: The 1.4 GHz microJansky catalogue
The initial Phoenix Deep Survey (PDS) observations with the Australia
Telescope Compact Array have been supplemented by additional 1.4 GHz
observations over the past few years. Here we present details of the
construction of a new mosaic image covering an area of 4.56 square degrees, an
investigation of the reliability of the source measurements, and the 1.4 GHz
source counts for the compiled radio catalogue. The mosaic achieves a 1-sigma
rms noise of 12 microJy at its most sensitive, and a homogeneous radio-selected
catalogue of over 2000 sources reaching flux densities as faint as 60 microJy
has been compiled. The source parameter measurements are found to be consistent
with the expected uncertainties from the image noise levels and the Gaussian
source fitting procedure. A radio-selected sample avoids the complications of
obscuration associated with optically-selected samples, and by utilising
complementary PDS observations including multicolour optical, near-infrared and
spectroscopic data, this radio catalogue will be used in a detailed
investigation of the evolution in star-formation spanning the redshift range 0
< z < 1. The homogeneity of the catalogue ensures a consistent picture of
galaxy evolution can be developed over the full cosmologically significant
redshift range of interest. The 1.4 GHz mosaic image and the source catalogue
