Linking human-building interactions in shared offices with personality traits
Occupant behavior influences office building energy performance. The level of human-building interactions (HBIs) in shared offices strongly influences building energy use and occupant well-being. This study explored the link between occupant personality types and their behaviors of sharing energy and environment control systems and interactions with their colleagues. Inspired by the Five-Factor Model (FFM), we classified HBI behaviors into four dimensions: willingness to share control, knowledge of control, group decision behavior, and adaptive strategies. These four variables can be mapped to the four personality traits proposed by the FFM: agreeableness, openness, extraversion, and conscientiousness. Our cluster analysis identified six behavioral patterns: average (17.7%), reserved (15.3%), environmentally friendly (16.6%), role model (24.2%), self-centered (17.2%), and mechanist (9.0%). We further applied association rules, a widely utilized machine learning technique, to discover how demographics, building-related contextual factors, and perception-attitudinal factors influence HBI behaviors. Country, control feature accessibility, and group dynamics were found to be the three most influential factors that determine occupants’ HBI behaviors. The study provides insights about building design and operation, as well as policy to promote socially and environmentally desirable HBI behaviors in a shared office environment
Effects of relative orientation of the molecules on electron transport in molecular devices
Effects of relative orientation of the molecules on electron transport in
molecular devices are studied by non-equilibrium Green's function method based
on density functional theory. In particular, two molecular devices, with the
planer Au and Ag clusters sandwiched between the Al(100) electrodes
are studied. In each device, two typical configurations with the clusters
parallel and vertical to the electrodes are considered. It is found that the
relative orientation affects the transport properties of these two devices
completely differently. In the Al(100)-Au-Al(100) device, the conductance
and the current of the parallel configuration are much larger than those in the
vertical configuration, while in the Al(100)-Ag-Al(100) device, an
opposite conclusion is obtained
Thermal rectification in asymmetric U-shaped graphene flakes
In this paper, we study the thermal rectification in asymmetric U-shaped
graphene flakes by using nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations. The
graphene flakes are composed by a beam and two arms. It is found that the heat
flux runs preferentially from the wide arm to the narrow arm which indicates a
strong rectification effect. The dependence of the rectification ratio upon the
heat flux, the length and the width of the beam, the length and width of the
two arms are studied. The result suggests a possible route to manage heat
dissipation in U-shaped graphene based nanoelectronic devices.Comment: 3 pages, 4 figure
Quakes in Solid Quark Stars
A starquake mechanism for pulsar glitches is developed in the solid quark
star model. It is found that the general glitch natures (i.e., the glitch
amplitudes and the time intervals) could be reproduced if solid quark matter,
with high baryon density but low temperature, has properties of shear modulus
\mu = 10^{30~34} erg/cm^3 and critical stress \sigma_c = 10^{18~24} erg/cm^3.

An Economic Analysis of Peer-Disclosure in Online Social Communities
We study a novel privacy concern, viz. peer disclosure of sensitive personal information in online social communities. We model peer disclosure as imposing a negative externality on other people. Our model encompasses the benefits from posting information, positive externalities such as recognition and entertainment benefits due to others' sharing of information, and heterogeneous privacy preferences. We find that regulation of peer disclosure is necessary. We consider two candidate regulations -- nudging and quota. Nudging reduces user participation and privacy harm and sometimes improve social welfare. By contrast, imposing a quota often improves user participation, privacy protection and social welfare. Adding a nudge on top of a quota does not bring additional
benefits. We show that any regulation that uniformly controls the disclosure of sensitive and nonsensitive information will not serve the triple objectives of reducing privacy harm, increasing social welfare, and increasing information contribution. We derive a necessary condition for solutions that can fulfill these three objectives. We also compare the incentives of the platform owner and
social planner and draw related managerial and policy implications
The radio structure of 3C 316, a galaxy with double-peaked narrow optical emission lines
The galaxy 3C\,316 is the brightest in the radio band among the
optically-selected candidates exhibiting double-peaked narrow optical emission
lines. Observations with the Very Large Array (VLA), Multi-Element Remotely
Linked Interferometer Network (e-MERLIN), and the European VLBI Network (EVN)
at 5\,GHz have been used to study the radio structure of the source in order to
determine the nature of the nuclear components and to determine the presence of
radio cores. The e-MERLIN image of 3C 316 reveals a collimated coherent
east-west emission structure with a total extent of about 3 kpc. The EVN image
shows seven discrete compact knots on an S-shaped line. However, none of these
knots could be unambiguously identified as an AGN core. The observations
suggest that the majority of the radio structure belongs to a powerful radio
AGN, whose physical size and radio spectrum classify it as a compact
steep-spectrum source. Given the complex radio structure with radio blobs and
knots, the possibility of a kpc-separation dual AGN cannot be excluded if the
