Radiation inactivation analysis of thylakoid protein kinase systems in light and in darkness
Chloroplast thylakoid contains several membrane-bound protein kinases that phosphorylate thylakoid polypeptides for the regulation of photosynthesis. Thylakoid protein phosphorylation is activated when the plastoquinone pool is reduced either by light-dependent electron flow through photosystem 2 (PS2) or by adding exogenous reductants such as durohydroquinone in the dark. The major phosphorylated proteins on thylakoid are components of light-harvesting complex 2 (LHC2) and a PS2 associated 9 kDa phosphoprotein. Radiation inactivation technique was employed to determine the functional masses of various kinases for protein phosphorylation in thylakoids. Under the photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), the apparent functional masses of thylakoid protein kinase systems (TPKXs) for catalyzing phosphorylation of LHC2 27 and 25 kDa polypeptides were 540 +/- 50 and 454 +/- 35 kDa as well as it was 448 +/- 23 kDa for PS2 9 kDa protein phosphorylation. Furthermore, the functional sizes of dark-regulated TPKXs for 25 and 9 kDa proteins were 318 +/- 25 and 160 +/- 8 kDa. The 9 kDa protein phosphorylation was independent of LHC2 polypeptides phosphorylation with regard to its TPKX functional mass. Target size analysis of protein phosphorylation mentioned above indicates that thylakoid contains a group of distinct protein kinase systems. A working model is accordingly proposed to interpret the interaction between these protein kinase systems
New improved Moser-Trudinger inequalities and singular Liouville equations on compact surfaces
We consider a singular Liouville equation on a compact surface, arising from
the study of Chern-Simons vortices in a self dual regime. Using new improved
versions of the Moser-Trudinger inequalities (whose main feature is to be
scaling invariant) and a variational scheme, we prove new existence results.Comment: to appear in GAF
An improved geometric inequality via vanishing moments, with applications to singular Liouville equations
We consider a class of singular Liouville equations on compact surfaces
motivated by the study of Electroweak and Self-Dual Chern-Simons theories, the
Gaussian curvature prescription with conical singularities and Onsager's
description of turbulence. We analyse the problem of existence variationally,
and show how the angular distribution of the conformal volume near the
singularities may lead to improvements in the Moser-Trudinger inequality, and
in turn to lower bounds on the Euler-Lagrange functional. We then discuss
existence and non-existence results.Comment: some references adde
Dispatcher-assisted cardiopulmonary resuscitation for paediatric out-of-hospital cardiac arrest
Aim
To evaluate communication issues during dispatcher-assisted cardiopulmonary resuscitation (DACPR) for paediatric out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in a structured manner to facilitate recommendations for training improvement.
Methods
A retrospective observational study evaluated DACPR communication issues using the SACCIA ® Safe Communication typology (Sufficiency, Accuracy, Clarity, Contextualization, Interpersonal Adaptation). Telephone recordings of 31 cases were transcribed verbatim and analysed with respect to encoding, decoding and transactional communication issues.
Results
Sixty SACCIA communication issues were observed in the 31 cases, averaging 1.9 issues per case. A majority of the issues were related to sufficiency (35%) and accuracy (35%) of communication between dispatcher and caller. Situation specific guideline application was observed in CPR practice, (co)counting and methods of compressions.
Conclusion
This structured evaluation identified specific issues in paediatric DACPR communication. Our training recommendations focus on situation and language specific guideline application and moving beyond verbal communication by utilizing the smart phone’s functions. Prospective efforts are necessary to follow-up its translation into better paediatric DACPR outcomes
A Measurement of Psi(2S) Resonance Parameters
Cross sections for e+e- to hadons, pi+pi- J/Psi, and mu+mu- have been
measured in the vicinity of the Psi(2S) resonance using the BESII detector
operated at the BEPC. The Psi(2S) total width; partial widths to hadrons,
pi+pi- J/Psi, muons; and corresponding branching fractions have been determined
to be Gamma(total)= (264+-27) keV; Gamma(hadron)= (258+-26) keV, Gamma(mu)=
(2.44+-0.21) keV, and Gamma(pi+pi- J/Psi)= (85+-8.7) keV; and Br(hadron)=
(97.79+-0.15)%, Br(pi+pi- J/Psi)= (32+-1.4)%, Br(mu)= (0.93+-0.08)%,
respectively.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figure
Measurements of the Mass and Full-Width of the Meson
In a sample of 58 million events collected with the BES II detector,
the process J/ is observed in five different decay

Probing exotic phenomena at the interface of nuclear and particle physics with the electric dipole moments of diamagnetic atoms: A unique window to hadronic and semi-leptonic CP violation
The current status of electric dipole moments of diamagnetic atoms which
involves the synergy between atomic experiments and three different theoretical
areas -- particle, nuclear and atomic is reviewed. Various models of particle
physics that predict CP violation, which is necessary for the existence of such
electric dipole moments, are presented. These include the standard model of
particle physics and various extensions of it. Effective hadron level combined
charge conjugation (C) and parity (P) symmetry violating interactions are
derived taking into consideration different ways in which a nucleon interacts
with other nucleons as well as with electrons. Nuclear structure calculations
of the CP-odd nuclear Schiff moment are discussed using the shell model and
other theoretical approaches. Results of the calculations of atomic electric
dipole moments due to the interaction of the nuclear Schiff moment with the
electrons and the P and time-reversal (T) symmetry violating
tensor-pseudotensor electron-nucleus are elucidated using different
relativistic many-body theories. The principles of the measurement of the
electric dipole moments of diamagnetic atoms are outlined. Upper limits for the
nuclear Schiff moment and tensor-pseudotensor coupling constant are obtained
combining the results of atomic experiments and relativistic many-body
theories. The coefficients for the different sources of CP violation have been
estimated at the elementary particle level for all the diamagnetic atoms of
current experimental interest and their implications for physics beyond the
standard model is discussed. Possible improvements of the current results of
the measurements as well as quantum chromodynamics, nuclear and atomic
calculations are suggested.Comment: 46 pages, 19 tables and 16 figures. A review article accepted for

Measurement of the diffractive structure function in deep inelastic scattering at HERA
This paper presents an analysis of the inclusive properties of diffractive
deep inelastic scattering events produced in interactions at HERA. The
events are characterised by a rapidity gap between the outgoing proton system
and the remaining hadronic system. Inclusive distributions are presented and
compared with Monte Carlo models for diffractive processes. The data are
consistent with models where the pomeron structure function has a hard and a
soft contribution. The diffractive structure function is measured as a function
of \xpom, the momentum fraction lost by the proton, of , the momentum
fraction of the struck quark with respect to \xpom, and of . The \xpom
dependence is consistent with the form \xpoma where
in all bins of and
. In the measured range, the diffractive structure function
approximately scales with at fixed . In an Ingelman-Schlein type
model, where commonly used pomeron flux factor normalisations are assumed, it
is found that the quarks within the pomeron do not saturate the momentum sum
rule.Comment: 36 pages, latex, 11 figures appended as uuencoded fil
