A high-flux source of polarization-entangled photons from a periodically-poled KTP parametric downconverter
We have demonstrated a high-flux source of polarization-entangled photons
using a type-II phase-matched periodically-poled KTP parametric downconverter
in a collinearly propagating configuration. We have observed quantum
interference between the single-beam downconverted photons with a visibility of
99% and a measured coincidence flux of 300/s/mW of pump. The
Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt version of Bell's inequality was violated with a
value of 2.711 +/- 0.017.Comment: 7 pages submitted to Physical Review
The distribution of geodesic excursions into the neighborhood of a cone singularity on a hyperbolic 2-orbifold
A generic geodesic on a finite area, hyperbolic 2-orbifold exhibits an
infinite sequence of penetrations into a neighborhood of a cone singularity, so
that the sequence of depths of maximal penetration has a limiting distribution.
The distribution function is the same for all such surfaces and is described by

A Charged Rotating Black Ring
We construct a supergravity solution describing a charged rotating black ring
with S^2xS^1 horizon in a five dimensional asymptotically flat spacetime. In
the neutral limit the solution is the rotating black ring recently found by
Emparan and Reall. We determine the exact value of the lower bound on J^2/M^3,
where J is the angular momentum and M the mass; the black ring saturating this
bound has maximum entropy for the given mass. The charged black ring is
characterized by mass M, angular momentum J, and electric charge Q, and it also
carries local fundamental string charge. The electric charge distributed
uniformly along the ring helps support the ring against its gravitational
self-attraction, so that J^2/M^3 can be made arbitrarily small while Q/M
remains finite. The charged black ring has an extremal limit in which the

Equivariant comparison of quantum homogeneous spaces
We prove the deformation invariance of the quantum homogeneous spaces of the
q-deformation of simply connected simple compact Lie groups over the
Poisson-Lie quantum subgroups, in the equivariant KK-theory with respect to the
translation action by maximal tori. This extends a result of Neshveyev-Tuset to
the equivariant setting. As applications, we prove the ring isomorphism of the
K-group of Gq with respect to the coproduct of C(Gq), and an analogue of the
Borsuk-Ulam theorem for quantum spheres.Comment: 21 page
Quantum teardrops
Algebras of functions on quantum weighted projective spaces are introduced,
and the structure of quantum weighted projective lines or quantum teardrops are
described in detail. In particular the presentation of the coordinate algebra
of the quantum teardrop in terms of generators and relations and classification
of irreducible *-representations are derived. The algebras are then analysed
from the point of view of Hopf-Galois theory or the theory of quantum principal
bundles. Fredholm modules and associated traces are constructed. C*-algebras of
continuous functions on quantum weighted projective lines are described and

Cholesterol granuloma is an inflammatory reaction to cholesterol crystals deposition. It may develop in a variety of
sites including the middle ear, mastoid process or even paranasal sinuses. Very few cases of cholesterol granuloma
occurring in the jaws were reported. This report presents a rare case of cholesterol granuloma that developed in
the wall of a large mandibular dentigerous cyst. The condition was treated with hemimandibulectomy followed by
reconstruction with a free fibular flap
Checkpoint kinase 2-mediated phosphorylation of BRCA1 regulates the fidelity of nonhomologous end-joining
The tumor suppressor gene BRCA1 maintains genomic integrity by protecting
cells from the deleterious effects of DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs).
Through its interactions with the checkpoint kinase 2 (Chk2) kinase and
Rad51, BRCA1 promotes homologous recombination, which is typically an
error-free repair process. In addition, accumulating evidence implicates
BRCA1 in the regulation of nonhomologous end-joining (NHEJ), which may
involve precise religation of the DSB ends if they are compatible (i.e.,
error-free repair) or sequence alteration upon rejoining (i.e.,
error-prone or mutagenic repair). However, the precise role of BRCA1 in
regulating these different subtypes of NHEJ is not clear. We provide here
the genetic and biochemical evidence to show that BRCA1 promotes
error-free rejoining of DSBs in human breast carcinoma cells while
suppressing microhomology-mediated error-prone end-joining and restricting
sequence deletion at the break junction during repair. The repair spectrum
in BRCA1-deficient cells was characterized by an increase in the formation
of >2 kb deletions and in the usage of long microhomologies distal to the
break site, compared with wild-type (WT) cells. This error-prone repair
phenotype could also be revealed by disruption of the Chk2 phosphorylation
site of BRCA1, or by expression of a dominant-negative kinase-dead Chk2
mutant in cells with WT BRCA1. We suggest that the differential control of
NHEJ subprocesses by BRCA1, in concert with Chk2, reduces the mutagenic
potential of NHEJ, thereby contributing to the prevention of familial
breast cancers
Nonmonotonic inelastic tunneling spectra due to surface spin excitations in ferromagnetic junctions
The paper addresses inelastic spin-flip tunneling accompanied by surface spin
excitations (magnons) in ferromagnetic junctions. The inelastic tunneling
current is proportional to the magnon density of states which is
energy-independent for the surface waves and, for this reason, cannot account
for the bias-voltage dependence of the observed inelastic tunneling spectra.
This paper shows that the bias-voltage dependence of the tunneling spectra can
arise from the tunneling matrix elements of the electron-magnon interaction.
These matrix elements are derived from the Coulomb exchange interaction using
the itinerant-electron model of magnon-assisted tunneling. The results for the
inelastic tunneling spectra, based on the nonequilibrium Green's function
calculations, are presented for both parallel and antiparallel magnetizations

Neutral Pions and Eta Mesons as Probes of the Hadronic Fireball in Nucleus-Nucleus Collisions around 1A GeV
Chemical and thermal freeze-out of the hadronic fireball formed in symmetric
collisions of light, intermediate-mass, and heavy nuclei at beam energies
between 0.8A GeV and 2.0A GeV are discussed in terms of an equilibrated,
isospin-symmetric ideal hadron gas with grand-canonical baryon-number
conservation. For each collision system the baryochemical potential mu_B and
the chemical freeze-out temperature T_c are deduced from the inclusive neutral
pion and eta yields which are augmented by interpolated data on deuteron
production. With increasing beam energy mu_B drops from 800 MeV to 650 MeV,
while T_c rises from 55 MeV to 90 MeV. For given beam energy mu_B grows with
system size, whereas T_c remains constant. The centrality dependence of the
freeze-out parameters is weak as exemplified by the system Au+Au at 0.8A GeV.
For the highest beam energies the fraction of nucleons excited to resonance
states reaches freeze-out values of nearly 15 %, suggesting resonance densities
close to normal nuclear density at maximum compression. In contrast to the
particle yields, which convey the status at chemical freeze-out, the shapes of
the related transverse-mass spectra do reflect thermal freeze-out. The observed
thermal freeze-out temperatures T_th are equal to or slightly lower than T_c,
indicative of nearly simultaneous chemical and thermal freeze-out.Comment: 42 pages, 12 figure
